We are Paul and Julie Michau. We live in Beaufort, South Carolina and stay at our home on Roatan three months a year. We bought land and built our dream low country house, with wrap around porches to maximize the spectacular views and sea breezes. We love the fact that we can get there from home to home in under 5 hours. Be snorkeling, fishing, kayaking, and swimming. How better to Live!! Love!! and Relax!!
Paul Michau purchased this house in 2006
We bought here because of the friendly Island people, the scenic beauty and the easy flights directly to the island from the USA.
Snorkeling, Kayaking, Fishing, Exploring the numerous interesting aspects of the Island.
We enjoy the peace and quiet of our secluded area and the fabulous views.
A little background on the group that went. We were in our late 20's and 30's, rented the main house and boathouse for a month so we had a lot of time to spend on the property. 5 of us were there for the month, and at times there were up to 10 of us. Even with 10 there, everyone had enough space to not feel crowded. Also Paul is a great home-owner and is always an email away.
From the moment you get off the plane, Franklin is there to greet you and your mind forgets about whatever it was thinking about and tunes into island time. The trip to the house is filled with a nice tour given by Franklin himself telling you all about Roatan and answering your questions before you even think to answer them.
Upon arriving to the house, we were blown away not only by the beautiful bay, which is right at your feet, but the build quality of the house is the best i've ever seen on an island, anywhere! The boat house was also amazing seeing how it was built right on stilts above the bay.
The kayaks, which we used almost everyday, were a lot of fun and you are able to kayak about 100 yards and tie them up to a post so you can snorkel your own private reef. We were always the only ones snorkeling at any given time. Its so quiet and peaceful.
So beyond the immaculate house, and amazing water you, Franklin was the best part of the whole trip. He made you feel comfortable and assured you that anything you need he can do. His knowledge of the house, the island, and the people who live there is second to none. Everywhere we went he knew people! He really takes the trip and makes it special. He was there for everything we needed and we left with a new friend who might be the biggest reason for coming back.
Overall, Sea-Grove Retreat lived up to and beyond expectations. Do yourself a favor, and book yourself a stay here.
Spent 7 nights with my family, my cousin's family, and mom. We snorkeled almost every day right off of our dock. We swam in the pool and in the bay as well. The property was spotless and incredibly nice (much moreso than we could have hoped for.)
Junior and Franklin were the 2 property managers and hosts and made sure that we had access to everything we could have asked for. The views are breathtaking and access to so many activities for the family that we had a hard time getting it all in.
I can't recommend this house any more highly and we are already planning a return in January. My kids said repeatedly it was the "best vacation ever."
First, Paul was so helpful and great to work with and answered many questions prior to our arrival. Everything was exactly or better than described and our time at Seagrove Retreat was much more than we expected. When we first arrived, my daughter-in-law said she felt like we won the lottery! The home itself is beautiful (the Honduran wood is gorgeous!) very welcoming and spacious....the pictures online really don't do the property justice. We did lots of cooking in the well stocked kitchen and having the washer/dryer was great. The decks around the house were fantastic. We spent lots of time in the hammock or in the rocking chairs enjoying the breeze and views. We also rented the casita on the water...having the kitchen, bathroom and deck was so convenient since we spent most of our time on the dock and in the water. We fished, kayaked, snorkeled, and used the paddle boards and raft. My husband caught a 3 pound grouper and several smaller ones and cooked fresh fish on the grill. Junior (such a sweetie) took us to The Hole in the Wall restauarant through the mangroves...it was an awesome experience. Franklin was a wealth of knowledge (not to mention a handyman!) and arranged for zip lining, and a snorkeling tour at the most beautiful beach (Havana Beach)....I highly recommend spending time there! He met us for lunch and we very much enjoyed visiting with him. We thoroughly enjoyed every minute of our time at Seagrove...(you will do LOTS of walking up and down stairs if you plan to spend time by the water but it was definitely worth it!!). Staying here can be super relaxing or as active as you can imagine...it has something for everyone!
There are many things that made our time in Roatan awesome and at the top of that list is the Seagrove Retreat. The house was more than comfortable for our group of 6 adults and 1 child. You will find everything you need from towels to items in the kitchen to water gear like kayaks and snorkels. It was such a bonus to have the pool for relaxing and the washing machine made life easier. The home is situated up on the hillside taking full advantage of the breezes. The home's staff was beyond helpful and accommodating. Franklin and Junior made sure we were able to go to anywhere we wanted and arranged for us to have the freshest lobster and fish. Their recommendations for restaurants and activities were excellent. The owner, Paul, is extremely easy to deal with and a good Roatan resource as well (he suggested our fantastic dive guide Larry). We would like to come back to Roatan in the near future and would definitely want to stay at Seagrove Retreat again!
What a wonderful home. BEST. VACATION. EVER.
Just spent 2 weeks in this wonderful home with my wife and our closest friends to celebrate our 25th anniversary. I can't express how much we enjoyed our time here.
First of all, the house is incredibly beautiful, the location is amazing.
Junior, the local caretaker, and his seemingly endless family took great care of us and takes great care of the home.
the local scuba shop picked us up and dropped us off at the dock and in between dropped us on some of the most beautiful reef wall dives in the world, pristine reef with 300 year old barrel sponges, lobster, king crab, barracuda and Lionfish (pretty, but an invasive species with no natural predator in the carribean)
Local fishermen would bring the catch of the day to the dock where we would haggle for price.
my only regret is that we only stayed 2 weeks.
We were two couples that enjoyed our stay at the Seagrove Retreat. The house is huge with all amenities included. Stereo, table tennis, paddleboard, kayaks, snorkel and fishing gear, hammocks, and all the cooking supplies you need. The pool has amazing views and if you have more than 3 couples going the casita would come in very handy. The only downfalls to this house, and after you are there they disappear, is the distance from the airport (roughly 40 minutes) and the stairs down to the house. The stairs are not as big of a deal once you realize that your luggage is being carried both down and up by your property manager, Franklin. This guy is tops in my book after chasing us to the airport to hand me my power cord for my laptop which I had left behind. Remember, this is a 40 minute ride, ONE DIRECTION! The guy is there for you whenever you need it. There is also a caretaker onsite, Junior, that makes sure that you are taken care of and will make sure the gate is open for you and the pool and grounds are well taken care of. Not very intrusive but there when you need him. The house gives a local phone which rocks when making arrangements with tour companies or asking Franklin any questions. I would consider this place again when returning to Roatan.
We have a deal with East End Divers who will pick you up at our dock and take you diving or snorkeling.
We also have the telephone number of a water taxi to take you on short excursions to restaurants or through the mangroves and various channels. Travelling the mangroves to the North side of the Island and up and around the East End of the Island is a gorgeous trip.
