Thank you for considering a stay at Freedom Hill Farm on Lantz Mountain in Mill Gap, Va - my name is Tom Duncan and I will be your host.
About 5 years ago, I was traveling through Bath County and decided to make a detour to see what Monterey & Highland County was all about. To say I was overwhelmed with the natural beauty of the mountains and pastures would be quite accurate. I immediately launched a search to locate a site for my new home and was lucky enough to locate raw land that extended from the valley bottom to the top of the mountain. During my final visit, prior to signing the closing documents I walked the land asking myself if I really wanted to take on this task. Somehow, the pair of American Eagles flying over my head seemed to speed up my affirmative decision.
I had always wanted a place with a nice view, and, well, now I have a better than magnificent view from Lantz Mountain across the southern Blue Grass valley to Back Creek mountain. Every window in my rental unit shares a portion of this view of Paradise and it awaits every visitor. I enjoy my wildlife and birds every day and want you to do the same. I set no agendas for my guests except to try and have you kick back and relax.
Getting to Freedom Hill Farm will be the easy part of your journey, trying to leave to return home might prove to be a
little more difficult.
Hope to see you soon!
Tom's cabin is located in the most remote and beautiful part of Virginia, and the cabin is situated in the perfect setting. We first crossed a ford (always a treat) on the way in. The cabin had everything we needed and was as comfortable as our home. From the porch swing you can see miles of mountains, an old church and a now abandoned two story farmhouse on the other side of the valley. Tom is friendly and helpful. On our first visit he gave us a tour of the property on his "gator" including taking us up the mountain in the back, all the way to the ridge. The house is stocked with every thing you will need and he has topography maps of the area. We will be going again as soon as we can take the time.
Our weekend stay at Tom's place in Monterey was great! If you love the mountains, you'll love this property. The view from the barn goes on for miles, and in each direction you look, it is beautiful! Very peaceful, and a great place to get away from everything. No cell phone service, but you can get a signal in the town of Monterey. We enjoyed walking on the property, watching a variety of birds, star gazing at night. Tom was very helpful by showing us the basics we needed to know when we got there, and letting us know about places to eat in town. We had an enjoyable drive and dinner at the Star Hotel in Franklin - a little distance, but well worth it. The barn had everything we needed, comfortable furnishings and beds. We got to meet Sweetie Pie and Tater - the four-legged welcome committee! If you want to leave the hectic pace of everyday life behind, this is it. We would definitely like to go back for a longer stay.
My wife and I, and our newborn stayed here and loved it. Very quiet, amazing beauty. We enjoyed wandering the property, on which you can take a short but enjoyable hike up the mountain. You'll love staying here.
Gorgeous little valley. Great place to get away from cell service, hustle & bustle. Cabin is very neat & clean, if furnishing is ad hoc. It's a re-purposed barn right across the drive from Tom's house, so it isn't totally secluded, but as others have noted, Tom is a very gracious host and very respectful of privacy. The rock-bottom ford on the drive up to the cabin is pretty intimidating, especially after a rain, but after Tom's encouragement we drove across in a Toyota Corolla no problem.
perfect location and setup for a peaceful and relaxing place to get away. Enough privacy without being too far from town. The host was very accomodating and generous. If you are looking for a location that has beautiful views and peaceful days, this is highly recommended.
There are no words to describe the peaceful days spent at Tom's beautiful hillside property. The "Highlands" region in the fall causes other destinations to pale in comparison. The cabin was comfortable with every detail amply provided. The outside swing allows one to look down the peaceful valley below as the pure mountain air fills the lungs with new vitality and energy.
Tom was the perfect hose and saw to our every need being met.
This was by fare the most restful and enjoyable vacation we have experienced in years.
