This is the story of our mom, Marie Puerini. In the past few years her health has declined and, since December, 2013 we have been assisting her with the management of her property. With deep appreciation and love for her classy style we hope to carry on for her. You may still see her at the house. If you choose to stay, pease do stop by and say 'Hello'.
Here is her story:
'My sister was many years my senior and was already living in Newport when I was born. Needless to say, Newport was a completely different town when I was growing up; smaller, less inhabited, no tourists, no restaurants, few stores, no style, and lots of handsome Navy men. As a little girl, I came on weekends with my mother and fell in love with the town.
Many years later I bought my first house here, gathered my children and never looked back. My youngest son wanted to open a small restaurant when he was 19 years old, so I left a very successful business and we became partners. That was 36 years ago, and the restaurant, now called Ida's,, became very successful.'
Lou Puerini purchased this cottage in 1990

My house and my Garden Apartment are on Almy Court, with views from the second floors that encompass Almy Pond. I chose this house by driving by one day many years ago and falling in love with it. It is a quiet area, lovely for walking. Just a few blocks down is Reject Beach, open to the public. It is part of Bailey's Beach, which is a private beach for the 'Summer Set'.
This was my fourth time staying at the Cottage, and it was another wonderful week in Newport. I always feel at home when I arrive. Everything you need is ready for you and it is spotless. The Cottage is so comfortable and is ideally located to one of my favorite parts of Newport, the Cliff Walk. This visit I learned the trolley system. The stop was only a block away, and the service to downtown was very fast. The ride was very enjoyable as it passed all the beautiful mansions. It's a great way to get around and you don't have to spend time looking for parking downtown.
I especially love being able to travel with my dog and cats, and it is such a treat to visit a place where they are truly welcome. The neighborhood is quiet, but friendly and it is a very nice change of pace from NYC. I look forward to my next visit to Newport and I will definitely be staying at the Cottage.
Great place! Clean and very comfortable. Very close to all attractions. Good for a couple
The cottage is in a quiet residential area of Newport. It is a cozy free-standing unit built over a garage for the main house, which is rented by others. The house is comfortable and convenient for one or two people, and has laundry and kitchen facilities. It is an approximately 20-minute walk to a small beach at the end of Coggeshall Ave., where the Cliff Walk ends, and a short drive to downtown Newport and the mansions. The owner is very responsive to questions and concerns. I had a very nice time there.
The cottage was lovely and perfect for our stay! It was pretty close the beach, mansions, and part of the cliff walk. We ended up renting bicycles and riding up to town which we found to be much easier and more beautiful than sitting in traffic or walking in the heat (it takes about 25 min to walk). The cottage itself is very clean and cozy - perfect for two people and their dogs! Would definitely choose to stay here again.
My husband and I loved our stay at the cottage! It was very clean and provided a cheerful atmosphere for our week long stay... perfect amount of space for two people. The property owner was easy to deal with and promptly answered any questions. We cooked a lot of meals at the house and treated it as a home away from home. You will have to hand wash the dishes as there is no dishwasher, but there is a clothes washer and dryer, which was a huge convenience. We did run out of some essentials mid-week... toilet paper, paper towels and garbage bags, but just picked some up from the store when replenishing our groceries anyway.
For me, being able to walk everywhere is usually important because I dislike taking time to look for parking or pay parking fees. The cottage has its own driveway, which was convenient. We were able to walk to a lot of the mansions and the cliff walk. We walked to Gooseberry Beach, which took us around 20 minutes one way (no sidewalks, so wear sneakers!) We had to drive to the other beaches, which all charge $10 - $15 for parking. Of all the beaches, I think Gooseberry was the prettiest, cleanest and had the best concession stand food. In the mornings I jogged to the main part of town, which was Thames Street and America's Cup Ave., which took about 15 minutes one way. But if you want to get dressed up to go to dinner, you will want to drive, as the street near the cottage doesn't have sidewalks. Parking in the garages or public areas uptown is very expensive, so I recommend driving around until you find a street space. They are plentiful if you don't mind walking five to ten minutes to your destination. Read the signs because public parking times vary. Or you can bring a bike with you, which would be better than driving or walking.
I would definitely stay at the cottage again, it is the quintessential beach getaway!
