My wife and I stayed at this property for 5 days in Oct. 2014. We chose this property due to the prior reviews and apparant good location. We were not disappointed. The owner met us upon our arrival and answered all of our questions, including the locations of nearby restaurants and where to purchase groceries. We traveled without a car as this location is very convenient to the Metro. We are in our 50's and out of shape; this was not a problem due to the proximity to everything. The apartment has everything you need; just show up with your suitcase. We have already decided if we return to DC in the future, we will try to stay here again!
My husband, two 12-year-olds, and I stayed for 4 nights touring Washington DC for my kids' first time. We highly recommend this apartment for the following reasons:
Ease of working with the owners
Plenty of luxury linens
We parked when we got there in front of the apartment and didn't drive again until we checked out. We walked 15 minutes to the Capitol and Smithsonian. Other times we took the Metro only 1.5 blocks away to go to the Zoo, White House, and other tourist places. We always felt safe walking around and always saw others walking, too.
The Eastern Market was really neat. Multiple vendors selling fruit, veggies, meat, fish--just a block away. (The apple fritters from the bakery vendor were a breakfast treat every day!) Plenty of restaurants right around the corner for every taste (including Starbucks, Baskin Robbins, and Dunkin Donuts when you crave something familiar).
Seeing the Capitol building every time we left the condo was such a treat for me. "It's right there!" I told my kids they have no idea how fortunate they are to stay close enough to tour DC so easily. We were very pleased, and we look forward to returning for more apple fritters.
My husband and I recently spent a week at this address. We absolutely loved it. We had never done VRBO beforeso we were pleasantly surprise. The apartment was in a great neighborhood. It was clean and had all the modern conveniences. Actually a home away from home. We rode metro everyday and the Eastern Market is just a block away so everything was very handy. The owners live on the property so they were available if we had any questions. I would highly recommend this rental. It has inspired us to rent again from VRBO.
This cosy apartment was an ideal base for our 8 days in Washington. Our hosts welcomed us warmly and were happy to answer our questions. Proximity to Easten Market allowed us to buy and prepare fresh healthy food, which was a big plus. There were good restaurants 5 minutes away if we chose not to cook. Easy access to the subway was an advantage. The neighbourhood felt safe and we happily walked to restaurants after dark. The apartment was roomy and clean and the kitchen well equipped for basic cooking. Laundry meant we could keep on top of the washing.
Capitol Hill/Eastern Market is a good base for exploring Washington. We would recomend this apartment without hesitation.
We stayed for the entire month of April, and our stay was everything we expected and hoped for. The apartment was very comfortable for two of us, and our adult daughter joined us for a weekend and again we had more than enough space. Jane and Bret went out of their way to make our month enjoyable. Having them in the upstairs part of the building was a distinct advantage in that they could check on us without being intrusive. Staying in a charming neighborhood gave us the opportunity of experiencing Washington DC unlike staying at a hotel. We were able to eat all of our breakfasts and probably a third of our suppers because of the galley kitchen. The washer and dryer allowed us to keep up with our clothes for the month.
In addition to the above, the apartment is about location, locqtion, location. There are three restraunt areas within easy walking distance, as well as a Starbucks. Most importantly, the Metro is a little over a block away, as is a Circulator bus route which takes you to the Capitol, Union Station and the Nationals ball park for a dollar. The capitol and Supreme Court were within easy walking distance also.
There is absolutely nothing we would have changed about our stay, and we will recommend it to our friends should they vacation in DC.
Again, thank you Jane and Bret.
* Fantastic Location - 1 blk to the Eastern Market metro station and to Eastern Market, 1+ block to restaurants, bakeries, coffee shops, other cute shops, 7-11, etc.
* Good size basement apartment
* Nicely furnished
* Nice owners who were generally helpful
* Hard pillows in both the bedroom and den (used a towel for a pillow instead)
* Uncomfortable bed and sofa sleeper (the sofa sleeper especially needs to be replaced)
* Only TV is in den so if someone is sleeping there, no TV for those who are still up (we're not big TV watchers but it would have been nice to have a TV to catch the news before bedtime while kids were already asleep)
* Small bathroom
* Bathroom mirror opens away from wall which is not a big deal except the bathroom is small and if two people are using the sink one needs to move aside in order to open mirror (this is minor but just irritating enough for me to mention)
* Kitchen is galley shaped connecting hallway to the bedroom and living room so if one person needed to pass while another one is cooking, the person cooking needs to move aside
I would give this place 3 1/2 stars. The location was really fantastic and the local amenities were great. The area had a true neighborhood feel to it. If the pillows and sofa sleeper were replaced (and possibly the mattress too) and a TV were added to the living room, I would give it 5 stars.
close to all Smithsonian museums, Capitol, Senate and Congressional offices, Library of Congress, Folger Theater & Library, and the National Mall.
