|Minimum Stay||2 - 7 nights|
The cottage is located on Truro Center Road near the top of the hill. It is not on Rte 6 as the google map may make you believe. If you need a weekend getaway, here it is. The minimum stay in the Fall/Winter season is 2 nights.
Happy New Year. This winter we are offering the Hummingbird cottage at a greatly reduced rate for a minimum of two nights, or up to a week, a month's or even a full winter stay.
We have a beautiful new Mitsubishi heater that keeps the whole cottage toasty warm. We also have a new 40" Sony TV with cable, of course, and internet connection.
Tranquility is the new rhythm of life. It is a great time year for walking the smooth, never-ending beaches. There is still plenty to do and see if you like art, theater, music eating great food, or shopping for unique gifts.
We have wrap around oceans, so you will rarely stray far from the Atlantic Ocean, Cape Cod Bay or the Pamet River estuary. Truro has some of the most beautiful beaches on the Cape--Ballston, Longnook, Head of the Meadow, Corn Hill. All the beaches are about five to ten minutes away.
Our guests have called this a 'fairytale' cottage, but we call it the Humming Bird cottage. The Humming Birds start to arrive at the end of April. Most people wait until July and August to come to the Cape, but it is just as magical in the quietness of the Winter and Spring, and the rates are really low.
Sitting just below a pretty barn, the cottage is nestled in a leafy dell with verdant trees enfolding it. If you like, you can eat your meals on the deck. There are lots of flowers, and often, young rabbits hopping around if our friendly fox has not made an appearance. Flocks of wild turkeys may also make a stately parade across the land from time to time.
The cottage has high speed internet and HD TV, a new washer and dryer, and a gas grill on the brick patio. The living room has a Chickering piano, original art on the walls, and a dining area overlooking flowers in the garden. There is a summer blue bedroom with a queen-size bed, big closet, and a kitchen with a pantry. For summertime there are whisper quiet ceiling fans in each room, and our newest addition is a beautifully silent Mitsubishi in- wall air conditioner/heater/dehumidifier which has made the cottage much sweeter.
Wellfleet and Provincetown are a ten minute drive for memorable dining, shopping, and live theater. The Julie Harris Stage in Wellfleet, the Provincetown Theater, and art galleries and museums are less than 15 minutes away by car or the nearby Flex bus. Golfing at the Highland Links overlooking the Atlantic is like golfing in paradise. Nearby, are the famed Cape Cod Lighthouse and the Truro Historical Museum.
The School for Arts at Castle Hill is right around the corner if you would like to take a class for part of the day while you are here. So you can choose to rest and relax on our pristine beaches, and at the same time, enrich your soul.
There is a good choice of restaurants in Truro. Wellfleet and Provincetown, and some overlook the water. Enjoy!
A wonderful hideaway, we very much enjoyed the beautiful views, quiet nights and cozy setting. The beach was perfect the weather the same (although apparently hurricane "Irene" is bearing down on us). P.S. Loved the humming birds.
Mary's lovely cottage has all the amenities you need to feel comfortable and right at home. The cottage is small but well laid out and is delightfully and colorfully decorated with some of Mary's own artwork. The furnishings are tasteful and comfortable, including the bed, which is not always the case with vacation rentals! The cottage has a new 'mini-split' heater/air conditioner/dehumidifier unit this year that gives you complete control over your indoor comfort, and there's always the option of just turning it off and opening the windows if you want a breeze. Add to all of this the fact that this very private cottage is centrally located and just a short car or bike ride away from many of Truro's fabulous beaches, and you can't go wrong.
Mary has taken the time to share her accumulated wisdom about the best times to visit Truro's many beautiful beaches based on winds, tides, and time of day, and it is well worth your time to read what she has to say. She also shares her recommendations for area restaurants and fun things to do, and in our opinion, her recommendations are spot on.
We would definitely rent the Hummingbird cottage again (the hummingbirds show up every day, as if on cue), and are already looking forward to our next visit.
I enjoyed my stay & would come back to this sweet garden cottage.
We had an amazing adventure here as the cottage is centrally located to breathtaking beaches, delicious restaurants, amazing art galleries yet a peaceful quiet place to return to and rest! The owner provides a notebook containing terrific tips to enjoy the area and she was welcoming and available yet honors your privacy. We are so grateful for our time here, the weather was beautiful and the cottage provided a much needed respite. The cottage was clean and bright and the yard was breezy and relaxing. The bed was comfortable and kitchen and grill gave us the opportunity to create yummy and simple meals in between dining out. The Cape is best at this time of year!
This was a very sweet cottage in a great location in Truro, near some great beaches a bit off the beaten path. The cottage is well equipped, albeit a bit damp smelling, but I did appreciate all the storage areas which allowed for a nice comfortable, homey feel. While located on the owner's main property, the cottage affords a lot of privacy, which is perfect for romance or solitude. It also has a nice rear deck which is great for eating or reading outside. My only complaints were a couple of very large spider webs inside the house - which is understandable as the house is in a somewhat wooded area - and the fact that the propane tank in the grill was empty. Those 2 things could have been checked before my arrival, but overall it was a very pleasant experience.
We rented this cottage for a week in mid -August. We found it to be spacious, clean, well decorated & complete with beautiful artwork. We were, however, struck with how musty the scent was inside the cottage. We worked trying combinations of air conditioner, windows open, etc and finally settled on the a/c unit’s dehumidifier. This helped but we continued to smell the mustiness throughout the week.
As I glanced around the cottage, I noticed that this cottage has no gutters. There is a place for them but they’re missing. I know that gutters are designed to bring water away from a structure, keeping moisture to a minimum. It appears that any water coming off the roof would go alongside the foundation of the cottage. This is not an ideal situation & might be contributing to the mustiness.
In addition, the gutters on the barn above drain into the driveway, only a few feet from the retaining wall along the side of the cottage. I would suggest a simple drain under the driveway to bring water from the barn away from the cottage.
Mary was very helpful and suggested she give us a lesson on the use of the dehumidifier. She also brought down nectar for the beautiful hummingbirds on the kitchen window feeder.
At present, I would not recommend this cottage to a friend or family member. In my opinion it needs simple remediation (gutters, drainage, etc) to help alleviate the mustiness.
The area. We have been annual visitors in Truro for some time now. The location for this cottage is perfect for our needs: close to Jams for coffee, croissants and to Mac's Seafood for amazing fresh seafood. A very short trip to our favorite beach: Ryder. Within close distance for our favorite sunset: Herring's Cove.
The cottage. Generous space for 2 people, very clean, cozy and thoughtful in details. The deck/porch is very intimate, the afternoon light creating amazing highlights into a rich and diverse plant display. Thank you Mary.
For golfing, Truro is famous for The Highland Links which overlook the Atlantic Ocean. For cultural activities Truro Center for the Arts at Castle Hill abounds in the visual arts, writing, music, art shows and art auctions, lectures by prominent writers, live music. A free harbor cruise called 'Paint the Town' in September during the Provincetown Schooner Regatta is phenomenal, and they hold a Dance Festival in October. See our website for catalogue. Fisherman love this time of year for surf fishing. The sea is magnificent.
