Idyllic Cottage in Leafy Glen Near the Ocean

Bedrooms 1
Space 600 sq. ft.
Property type cottage
Minimum Stay 3 - 7 nights

About the property

1 bedroom, 1 bath, living room, kitchen, pantry, sleeps 2

The cottage is located on Truro Center Road near the top of the hill. It is available throughout the Fall, Winter, Spring and Summer for months, or for weeks, or for a stay of at least three days.

Our guests have called this a 'fairytale' cottage, but we call it the Humming Bird Cottage. Sadly, the Humming Birds have departed on their Fall migration. Most people wait until July and August to come to the Cape, but it has beauty at any time of year if you are curious about nature.

In the Cottage we have installed a beautiful new Mitsubishi heater/air conditioner that keeps the whole cottage toasty warm or soothingly cool. We also have a new 40" Sony TV and WIFI connection.

Tranquility is the rhythm of life in Fall and Winter. It is a great time of year for walking the never-ending beaches. There is plenty to do and see if you like nature, art, theater, music, eating good food, shopping for unique gifts, or just want a space for peace and reflection.

We have wrap -around oceans, so you will rarely stray far from the Atlantic Ocean, Cape Cod Bay or the Pamet River estuary. Truro has some of the highest dunes -- Longnook -- and most beautiful beaches on the Cape -- Ballston Beach, Longnook, Head of the Meadow, Corn Hill. All the beaches are about five to ten minutes away. For sunsets Pamet Harbor, and Great Hollow Beach. and in nearby Provincetown, the panoramic sunsets of Race Point. I watch for whales breaching or spouting at Herring Cove. but I can also see them sometimes on walks along the trails at the tops of the dunes in Truro.

The cottage is sitting just below a pretty barn, very private, and nestled in a leafy dell with verdant trees enfolding it. You can eat your meals on the deck in the Summer. There are lots of flowers, and often, young rabbits hopping around if our friendly fox has not made an appearance. Flocks of wild turkeys may also make a stately parade across the land from time to time, especially in the Fall.

The cottage has a new washer and dryer, and a gas grill on the patio. The living room has a Chickering piano, original art on the walls, and a dining area overlooking the landscape. There is a summer blue bedroom with a queen-size bed, big closet, and a kitchen with a pantry. For summertime there are whisper -quiet ceiling fans in each room, and a new addition is a beautifully silent Mitsubishi air conditioner/heater/dehumidifier which has made the cottage a delight to be in. The cottage is very well insulated and heated, so it is toasty warm in Winter.

Wellfleet and Provincetown are a ten minute drive for memorable dining, shopping, and live theater. The Julie Harris Stage in Wellfleet, has "Live from the Met'"operas in the Fall, Winter and Spring, the Provincetown Theater, and art galleries and museums , all are less than 15 minutes away by car or the nearby Flex bus. In the summertime, golfing at the Highland Links overlooking the Atlantic is like golfing in paradise. Nearby, are the famed Cape Cod Lighthouse and many treasures in the Truro Historical Museum.

The School for Arts at Castle Hill is right around the corner if you would like to take a class for part of the day while you are here. So you can choose to rest and relax , and at the same time, enrich your soul.

There is a good choice of restaurants in Truro, Wellfleet and Provincetown, and some overlook the water. Enjoy!

Guestbook comments from the owner

A wonderful hideaway, we very much enjoyed the beautiful views, quiet nights and cozy setting. The beach was perfect the weather the same (although apparently hurricane "Irene" is bearing down on us). P.S. Loved the humming birds.

Charming, quiet cottage with lovely private deck and yard

  • 5 of 5

Mary's lovely cottage has all the amenities you need to feel comfortable and right at home. The cottage is small but well laid out and is delightfully and colorfully decorated with some of Mary's own artwork. The furnishings are tasteful and comfortable, including the bed, which is not always the case with vacation rentals! The cottage has a new 'mini-split' heater/air conditioner/dehumidifier unit this year that gives you complete control over your indoor comfort, and there's always the option of just turning it off and opening the windows if you want a breeze. Add to all of this the fact that this very private cottage is centrally located and just a short car or bike ride away from many of Truro's fabulous beaches, and you can't go wrong.

Mary has taken the time to share her accumulated wisdom about the best times to visit Truro's many beautiful beaches based on winds, tides, and time of day, and it is well worth your time to read what she has to say. She also shares her recommendations for area restaurants and fun things to do, and in our opinion, her recommendations are spot on.

We would definitely rent the Hummingbird cottage again (the hummingbirds show up every day, as if on cue), and are already looking forward to our next visit.

Lovely winter mini vacation

  • 5 of 5

Loved the location, close to the beaches, despite the weather, it's was great walking, feeling like the lone person on earth. We didn't mind the snow, fog and wind. Actually enjoy them, we are of Dutch origin.

Cottage had everything we needed, must admit not doing much cooking, too many restaurants closeby. Very comfortable, and artful, good bed. Mary had left us goodies, very much appreciated, and an informative "manual".

Truro is one of my favorite places on the Cape.

Our home away from home

  • 5 of 5

This cottage was delightful, with many thoughtful touches to it. Mary's,paintings decorated the cottage, and it was most comfortable, with many thoughtful amenities. We loved the seclusion and privacy. We spent a lot of time on the deck in the midst of lovely gardens and enjoyed the birds, bunnies and chippies. We needed to destress and relax on this vacation and we certainly did. Mary is charming and very helpful. The beaches are close by. We loved our stay here.

Perfect Truro

  • 5 of 5

Quaint little cottage. Very quiet and secluded feeling. Awesome to grill outside. Perfect for a couple. Near excellent Blackfish restaurant, Truro green w/ general store, farmers market, music, morning yoga. House includes kayaks. Mary is a very nice landlady, an artist. We've come four times. Now a tradition.

A great place to stay in Truro. such a lovely cottage. wonderful host

  • 5 of 5

We had an amazing month in this lovely cottage! Mary was a great host and made us feel at home. It was good to know that we can approach her for anything we need or just for tips regarding the best places to see. The cottage is beautifly designed and decorated and has everything you need, practial as well as interesting books. We enjoyed the cooking books and tried out sone recepies in the kitchen. The location is great because its quiet yet centraly located. You can walk 2 miles to the ocean or the bay! We managed without a car just walking, biking or taking the Flex bus to Provincetown or other nearby places. This is a true paradise for nature lovers. We heard and saw so many birds even while sitting inside. At the end of our stay we even saw the hummingbird!

For golfing, Truro is famous for The Highland Links which overlook the Atlantic Ocean. For cultural activities Truro Center for the Arts at Castle Hill abounds in the visual arts, writing, music, art shows and art auctions, lectures by prominent writers, live music. A free harbor cruise called 'Paint the Town' in September during the Provincetown Schooner Regatta is phenomenal, and they hold a Dance Festival in October. See our website for catalogue. Fisherman love this time of year for surf fishing. The sea is magnificent.
