About the property

1 bedroom, 1 bath, living room, kitchen, pantry, sleeps 2

The cottage is located on Truro Center Road near the top of the hill. We still have some weeks available in May, and June if you act soon (please see the calendar).

Our guests have called this a 'fairytale' cottage, but we call it the Humming Bird Cottage. The Humming Birds have arrived and they're sipping syrup at the kitchen window. Most people wait until July and August to come to the Cape, but it is magical in the early Spring, filled with eager birdsong, the budding of green leaves, and the flowering of trees.

In the Cottage we have installed a beautiful new Mitsubishi heater/air conditioner that keeps the whole cottage toasty warm or soothingly cool. We also have a new 40" Sony TV and WIFI connection.

Tranquility is the rhythm of life. This is a great time of year for walking the never-ending beaches. There is plenty to do and see if you like nature, art, theater, music eating good food, or shopping for unique gifts.

We have wrap around oceans, so you will rarely stray far from the Atlantic Ocean, Cape Cod Bay or the Pamet River estuary. Truro has some of the highest dunes -- Longnook -- and most beautiful beaches on the Cape -- Ballston Beach, Longnook, Head of the Meadow, Corn Hill. All the beaches are about five to ten minutes away. For sunsets Pamet Harbor, and Great Hollow Beach. and in nearby Provincetown, the panoramic sunsets of Race Point. I watch for whales breaching or spouting at Herring Cove. but I can also see them sometimes on walks along the trails at the tops of the dunes in Truro.

Sitting just below a pretty barn, the cottage is nestled in a leafy dell with verdant trees enfolding it. If you like, you can eat your meals on the deck. There are lots of flowers, and often, young rabbits hopping around if our friendly fox has not made an appearance. Flocks of wild turkeys may also make a stately parade across the land from time to time.

The cottage has a new washer and dryer, and a gas grill on the patio. The living room has a Chickering piano, original art on the walls, and a dining area overlooking flowers in the garden. There is a summer blue bedroom with a queen-size bed, big closet, and a kitchen with a pantry. For summertime there are whisper quiet ceiling fans in each room, and a newest addition is a beautifully silent Mitsubishi air conditioner/heater/dehumidifier which has made the cottage much sweeter.

Wellfleet and Provincetown are a ten minute drive for memorable dining, shopping, and live theater. The Julie Harris Stage in Wellfleet, the Provincetown Theater, and art galleries and museums are less than 15 minutes away by car or the nearby Flex bus. Golfing at the Highland Links overlooking the Atlantic is like golfing in paradise. Nearby, are the famed Cape Cod Lighthouse and the treasures in the Truro Historical Museum.

The School for Arts at Castle Hill is right around the corner if you would like to take a class for part of the day while you are here. So you can choose to rest and relax on our pristine beaches, and at the same time, enrich your soul.

In season, there is a good choice of restaurants in Truro, Wellfleet and Provincetown, and some overlook the water. Enjoy!

Guestbook comments from the owner

A wonderful hideaway, we very much enjoyed the beautiful views, quiet nights and cozy setting. The beach was perfect the weather the same (although apparently hurricane "Irene" is bearing down on us). P.S. Loved the humming birds.

Charming, quiet cottage with lovely private deck and yard

  • 5 of 5

Mary's lovely cottage has all the amenities you need to feel comfortable and right at home. The cottage is small but well laid out and is delightfully and colorfully decorated with some of Mary's own artwork. The furnishings are tasteful and comfortable, including the bed, which is not always the case with vacation rentals! The cottage has a new 'mini-split' heater/air conditioner/dehumidifier unit this year that gives you complete control over your indoor comfort, and there's always the option of just turning it off and opening the windows if you want a breeze. Add to all of this the fact that this very private cottage is centrally located and just a short car or bike ride away from many of Truro's fabulous beaches, and you can't go wrong.

Mary has taken the time to share her accumulated wisdom about the best times to visit Truro's many beautiful beaches based on winds, tides, and time of day, and it is well worth your time to read what she has to say. She also shares her recommendations for area restaurants and fun things to do, and in our opinion, her recommendations are spot on.

We would definitely rent the Hummingbird cottage again (the hummingbirds show up every day, as if on cue), and are already looking forward to our next visit.

A great place to stay in Truro. such a lovely cottage. wonderful host

  • 5 of 5

We had an amazing month in this lovely cottage! Mary was a great host and made us feel at home. It was good to know that we can approach her for anything we need or just for tips regarding the best places to see. The cottage is beautifly designed and decorated and has everything you need, practial as well as interesting books. We enjoyed the cooking books and tried out sone recepies in the kitchen. The location is great because its quiet yet centraly located. You can walk 2 miles to the ocean or the bay! We managed without a car just walking, biking or taking the Flex bus to Provincetown or other nearby places. This is a true paradise for nature lovers. We heard and saw so many birds even while sitting inside. At the end of our stay we even saw the hummingbird!

Private romantic getaway cottage for couple

  • 5 of 5

We had an amazing adventure here as the cottage is centrally located to breathtaking beaches, delicious restaurants, amazing art galleries yet a peaceful quiet place to return to and rest! The owner provides a notebook containing terrific tips to enjoy the area and she was welcoming and available yet honors your privacy. We are so grateful for our time here, the weather was beautiful and the cottage provided a much needed respite. The cottage was clean and bright and the yard was breezy and relaxing. The bed was comfortable and kitchen and grill gave us the opportunity to create yummy and simple meals in between dining out. The Cape is best at this time of year!

Sweet cottage

  • 4 of 5

This was a very sweet cottage in a great location in Truro, near some great beaches a bit off the beaten path. The cottage is well equipped, albeit a bit damp smelling, but I did appreciate all the storage areas which allowed for a nice comfortable, homey feel. While located on the owner's main property, the cottage affords a lot of privacy, which is perfect for romance or solitude. It also has a nice rear deck which is great for eating or reading outside. My only complaints were a couple of very large spider webs inside the house - which is understandable as the house is in a somewhat wooded area - and the fact that the propane tank in the grill was empty. Those 2 things could have been checked before my arrival, but overall it was a very pleasant experience.

Owner's Response: I appreciate this mostly positive review, and all I can say is it is not easy to keep up with the speed and creativity of a spider. My cleaner and I work very hard to clear any webs away, but a spider can easily weave a web in no time at all. Also, I cannot force anyone to read the information binder that I leave on the desk in the cottage, which directs our guests to the extra propane stored in the barn with the kayak paddles and life jackets.

Clean, Well Decorated, but Musty

  • 2 of 5

We rented this cottage for a week in mid -August. We found it to be spacious, clean, well decorated & complete with beautiful artwork. We were, however, struck with how musty the scent was inside the cottage. We worked trying combinations of air conditioner, windows open, etc and finally settled on the a/c unit’s dehumidifier. This helped but we continued to smell the mustiness throughout the week.

As I glanced around the cottage, I noticed that this cottage has no gutters. There is a place for them but they’re missing. I know that gutters are designed to bring water away from a structure, keeping moisture to a minimum. It appears that any water coming off the roof would go alongside the foundation of the cottage. This is not an ideal situation & might be contributing to the mustiness.

In addition, the gutters on the barn above drain into the driveway, only a few feet from the retaining wall along the side of the cottage. I would suggest a simple drain under the driveway to bring water from the barn away from the cottage.

Mary was very helpful and suggested she give us a lesson on the use of the dehumidifier. She also brought down nectar for the beautiful hummingbirds on the kitchen window feeder.

At present, I would not recommend this cottage to a friend or family member. In my opinion it needs simple remediation (gutters, drainage, etc) to help alleviate the mustiness.

Owner's Response: This review is very unfair. The investments into keeping the air in the cottage fresh and clean have been substantial, i.e., a new Mitsubishi cooling/heating installation for $4,000 this year. These renters said that they opened the windows to try to alleviate their problem, which in the intense humidity we had this summer is exactly the wrong thing to do. Readers will notice that none of the other guests in my cottage this summer had the experience that this guest did. I always clean the cottage for two hours before a new guest arrives, and I was assured that the cottage smelled just fine. So it had to be something that was done after this. The renter's simple remediation--drains and gutters-- are very good, but one has to have the means to go forward with such suggestions. Furthermore, it never rained this summer--we have been experiencing a drought-- so keeping the windows open to the humidity was the only reason for the complaint. Finally I would like to say that this renter showed a lack of respect by ignoring the checkout time in my rental agreement which appeared online, in the Driving and Access Information I sent, and in the Information Binder in the cottage. When I came to clean the cottage, he was just getting into the shower.
