About Mrs. Jennifer Howard
The owners of this property discovered this lovely little village - only 15 kms from the town of Alencon in 2003 and bought it as their second home. After a few years Saint Céneri became their main home and they also purchased the adjoining property (formerly the local blacksmiths) which they use as and Art Studio and gallery/shop.
Why Mrs. Jennifer Howard chose Saint-Léonard-des-Bois
The village of Saint Céneri-le-Gérei is designated as one of the 'Plus Beaux Villages de France'. It has attracted artists for more than 100 years. Properties are not often available in this village as they are passed down within the various old families that have lived here for generations. The previous owner of 'La Cour' had owned it for seventy years. The current owners have brought the house up to date with modern conveniences but retained the attractive original features such as the tiled floors, elegant panelled doors and tall wood-framed windows with shutters.
What makes this House unique
The house is set in a small terrace on the main 'Bourg' at the centre of St.Céneri-le-Gérei and it's position means that visitors can spend time enjoying the village on foot. The narrow streets are set against the granite rocks of 'Les Alpes Mancelles' that border the river Sarthe. The ancient church of St.Céneri sits on the crag of the highest peak and commands a panoramic view over the river and stone-built village houses below. There are barely 140 'Giroise' village residents, but it's charms have attracted ramblers, strollers, fishermen, photographers, poets and artists for more than 100 years. Some have tried to capture the essence of this tranquil place and currently there are five Artists and a Sculptor with studios in and around the village. The visitors to the village support a Brasserie, two Bistros and a café-bar which between them provide a variety of meals plus a place to sit, chat and enjoy the scenery. * Auberge de Vallée, Auberge des Peintres, Le P'tit Caboulot, La Taverne Giroise, The village of St.Pierre des Nids is 4 km away and this has a cinema and variety of shops including a supermarket. There is no public transport to Saint Céneri-le-Gérei, but a taxi service is available to the nearest town Alencon (20 mins.) Alencon has a regular train service to Le Mans (25 mins) which has a fast-train to Paris (1 hour). From Alencon there's a motorway link north to Caen (1.5 hrs) and south to Le Mans. (45 mins.) Le Mans is famous for it's 24 hour sports car races. This city has a modern city-centre, a beautiful medieval town on the ramparts and a large Cathedral. This is the setting for a magical laser-light show held every summer.

Set in the the beautiful scenery of the Normandy Maine Natural Parc, this village with stone houses built around a winding river has attracted artists for more than 100 years and is listed as one of the most beautiful villages in France.* Fishermen also love this tranquil setting as well as river riders in kayaks, horse-riders and hikers. The village also boasts a stunning botanical garden 'Les Jardins de la Mansonière' which present summer concerts 'Son et lumière' . There are also open-air concerts held around the little Chapel of Saint Céneri, set in the manicured fields that slope down to the riverside. Each Pentecost there is a festival of artists known as the 'Rencontre des Peintres' which is organised by the 'Amis de Saint Céneri'. Different artists travel from all over France to stay in the village and exhibit their latest works. There are also five resident artists in and around the village as well as a sculptor, whose metal 'stages of the cross' are exhibited in the ancient church of Saint Céneri. The ruins of the old chateau built by the family Gérei have given their name to the village and the local inhabitants are now called Les Giroise. *http://www.saintceneri.org The town of Alencon is only 15 drive away. This town is lively with a market twice a week and a pedestrian boulevard with lots of smart shops. The old part of the town has medieval timber framed houses and interesting shops and restaurants.
