About The Owner

I have lived in Somerset all my life. I am passionate about the Somerset Levels as an area of outstanding natural beauty with a rich history.

In 2013 I was granted permission to convert the shed into a holiday cottage which would be built on one storey and therefore accessible to those with disabilities. This was something I felt particularly passionate about as a Gurkha officer who has served in Afghanistan and known a number of wounded soldiers.

Why The Owner chose Muchelney

The concept of Woodsfield Barn was always to build somewhere which would be welcoming and peaceful - a place where people can enjoy this stunning countryside.

Comfortable Country Retreat Overlooking The Somerset Commons

  • 5 of 5

Lovely well looked after property with space around us. All very comfortable and just what we needed as we toured Somerset cideries. The owner provided excellent selections on local eateries and we had a delicious breakfast at Brown & Forrest Smokery followed by a stop at Burrow Hill cidery. We also visited Wilkins and Bere cideries, which were a short drive away.

The kitchen was very functional and we cooked in most nights. Even the knifes were sharp. The town of Langport provided all of the needed services, butcher, baker and Tesco for incidentals.

This was a wonderful stay for us with all of the comforts of home. I highly recommend this property.

A truly beautiful quaint location.

  • 5 of 5

A delightful place to stay and explore the Somerset levels. Perfect if you have dogs as there are 2 fields for them to run around and plenty of walk to go on especially the old railway line into Langport. Accomadation was light and spacious which was well equipped and a nice wet room which was ideal after a long country walk.

A little piece of heaven

  • 5 of 5

Beautifully equipped and furnished, incredibly cosy and comfortable, light and airy, and so much more than I expected. The views across the wide open landscape was so relaxing, as was the fact that all you could hear were birds and sheep. It was so wonderful that there wasn't the need to go far afield, but enjoy the tranquility of such a fabulous location. The dogs loved having the paddock to play in, and also the abundance of easily accessible footpaths. The village is stunningly beautiful, with Muchelney Abbey and church viewable across the fields from the barn. I would definitely love to stay here again, and would certainly recommend it.

Lovely peaceful setting

  • 5 of 5

Hard to believe that this was once a sheep shed. Comfortable, cosy and deceptively spacious. We took our 2 black Labradors, they loved having the field to run in, home away from home. We didn't feel that anything was missing. A nice bottle of wine and some delicious cake was waiting for us on arrival - thank you for a lovely stay.

Home from home in Somerset

  • 5 of 5

Woodsfield Barn was everything we wanted and more. Having never visited Somerset before we wanted peace and tranquility but within easy reach of the local amenities and that was exactly what this property offered, along with all the comforts of home. It was clean, cosy and the bed was particularly inviting. The kitchen was well equipped and it was great to have a washer/dryer to deal with our wet walking clothes.

The paddock was great for the dog as were the walks along the River Parret. If you do intend to walk along the river I would recommend walking boots as the route is also home to several herds of cows. Inevitably the area can get quite muddy and messy underfoot.

There are lots of recommendations of places to eat and places of interest locally however for us, two deserved a special mention. The Halfway Inn at Pitney served some of the best pub grub we've ever eaten. The fish and chips were fantastic and the real ale selection second to none. Secondly Bere Cider Company just outside Aller was a mecca for genuine Somerset cider, not the fizzy mass produced stuff but real still cider made on the farm. Jim the producer is a fantastic character who is more than happy to chat whilst offering you a sample of his Gold Rush cider. Take some time here and you won't regret it.

We would definitely stay here again without hesitation. Oh, and thank you for the wine and homemade cake, it was a really nice touch.
