Excerpts from a thank you card received,
Dear Holly & Rick,
I wanted to thank you so much for your hospitality. Your home and property are amazing. We had such a wonderful time. Should we find ourselves fortunate enough to visit again, we will definitely want to stay with you. We thoroughly enjoyed the fresh fruit and all the equipment in the sports shack! We were able to experience so many beautiful places while we were there. After all we had been through before our arrival, it was such a blessing to find time to heal in such an amazing place. May God bless and keep you well. The world would be a better place with more wonderful people like you. In love, D & M
We felt like we lived there on the island and had the best neighbors! It turns out those neighbors were our hosts, Holly and Rick. Holly met us in the driveway at night when we first arrived as if we were family. My husband and I were married the day before, so arriving to a candle lit cottage with fresh tropical fruit and beautiful island flowers, a wedding present on our amazing bed, and various adventure books and Holly's own compilation of places she recommended on the island, were already above and beyond our expectations for a 10 night stay. The use of all non toxic, natural bedding materials and even handmade soaps made every shower, every soak in the hot tub feel like an oasis. We wanted to start our lives in this same natural and non toxic manner, so being able to talk about and learn about simple healthy living was wonderful. Being an outdoors-man, my husband was worried about the location not being secluded enough, but you'd never know it having been there, sleeping with the windows open every night. Being in Kapa'a made venturing on the island very easy because it's actually centrally located for driving anywhere on the island. This area also had local festivities going on that allowed us to feel like a part of the local community. If you're adventurers, use what they provide in the sport shack! We were able to save money in those small ways that add up quickly too, like needing water bottles, ice packs, a cooler, and a mesh bag to carry our snorkel gear, which we just don't own and couldn't fit on the plane if we did, but it's a "necessity" and they have it all! They have everything you can probably think of needing and more, including mosquito repellent that works! Rick poured his heart into the construction of the energy efficient cottage and perfect lanai, and Holly into adding everything that makes you feel like you're at home on Kauai. You can eat out of the garden, swim under the hidden waterfall on their property, and spend time with their pets as much as you like. My husband is severely allergic to cats and had no negative reaction to them as they are outdoor cats that come and go. The two dogs are incredibly sweet, their pig a little ornery... and the horses nearby, great friends. It's a natural island with lots of secret treasures to discover. Staying at HALE MALA PUA allows you to EXPERIENCE IT ALL! Thank you Holly and Rick for welcoming us into your home away from home!
Our stay at Hale Mala Pua was absolutely incredible. From the very moment we started inquiring about the property, our experience was wonderful. Holly was so gracious to answer all our questions (we had many as this was our first trip to Hawaii) and she greeted us like family when we arrived. I can really only reiterate what other reviewers have said about the cottage and property. The cottage and sports shack are very well stocked. Holly and Rick have thought of everything and then some. We took advantage of the fruit trees every morning for our breakfast and cooked many meals “at home” in the evening. The house is centrally located on the island so exploring both the north and south shores is easy traveling distance. If you have the opportunity, rent a jeep while you are there. It makes getting around back roads on the island easier and a lot of fun! As far as any ants and mosquitoes, the ants are hardly noticeable if you keep everything clean and the mosquitoes are no worse than anything in the Midwest on a normal summer’s eve. We just can’t say enough about the hospitality of both Holly and Rick. They are by far the most accommodating hosts we have ever had without ever being intrusive. Thanks so much Holly and Rick! We will be back!
Kelli and Renee
I forgot to add the sports shack has everything you need and more and is in very good condition and clean. The listing does not list everything that is included in the shack so you will find more than you think will be there. Holly and Rick definitely go above and beyond to make your stay complete and wonderful.
The Host are just as you would hope kind, polite and scrace but available if needed. Ms Holly's beautiful Soul shines Brightly. Thank YOU for the Aloha
From the moment my wife and I saw Holly & Rick's cottage, we knew it was where we would spend our honeymoon. We could not have picked a better place. She loved the cozy comfort, I loved the sport shack and all the equipment, we both loved the lanai with the tub and outdoor shower. Holly was the perfect host, everything we needed her to be. She was incredibly helpful when we needed her, and completely respectful of our privacy when we didn't. She knows an incredible amount about the island and through her recommendations we had some wonderful experiences that aren't in any travel books! The cottage is perfect for two, cozy and intimate and very comfortable. We had a hard time saying goodbye on our last day. It was so romantic, and the night of our arrival Holly had very thoughtfully prepared for our arrival with tea lights throughout the cottage casting a warm, welcoming glow. The next morning we toured the property with her and met all the wonderful animals, saw all the fruit we were welcome to eat, and the idyllic waterfall behind the property as well. Just book this spot - you won't regret it. We can't wait to go back.
If you're considering Kauai, I highly recommend it. It's laid back, beautiful, verdant and perfect for people like us who just want to get away from everything but still have wonderful nights out. We hiked, swam, shopped, and ate more than our fill. Kapaa is on the East side of the island, a sleepy little town with some good eats and really nice people. The north shore has great beaches and the south side has some good shopping and restaurants, but the east has our kind of relaxed vibe and is perfectly situated for trips to all sides of the island. Make sure you get a lomi lomi massage and go on the tube ride through the sugarcane plantation irrigation canals!
My husband and I have traveled extensively to the Hawaiian Islands but never have been to Kauai until this year. We researched various towns and decided on Kappa due to it's small town feel, great restaurants and unique shops, plus having some of the best beaches and trails for running. When looking for a vacation rental we found Hale Mala Pua and told ourselves this is where we need to stay. The pictures and description of the property made this an easy decision for our January 2016 get-away. From the moment you pull into the driveway you instantly know you made the right choice! The pictures don't do it justice on how beautiful it truly is. Holly has put so much detail in making your stay the best with the decor and artwork, fresh cut flowers throughout the house, well-stocked kitchen for cooking your meals, the outdoor shower and lanai to make your trip even more relaxing, to the organic sheets and the most amazing comfortable bed you have ever slept on! The shack with all the beach stuff you need is right there, too - and I mean lots of stuff. The orange trees provided us with fresh squeezed juice every morning (and the kitchen had both an electric juicer plus a hand-pressed juicer) and the avocado trees were fully loaded to help you make that guacamole dip. Little banana trees are on the property and Rick was always leaving us a cluster of them right outside our front door. The back of the property has the stream/waterfall that instantly gives you such a spiritual feeling that you know you are in paradise! It is so quiet being away from town but knowing the beach and Kappa town are only a 8 minute drive away. We have stayed in many vacation rentals, and this is by far the best. If we could give 10 stars we would! Holly and Rick are there for all your needs, but also give you the privacy at the same time. Thank you Holly and Rick for making this a trip to remember! We will be back.
