Overview

About the property

3 bedrooms, loft, 3 full bathrooms, sleeps 8 comfortably.

Welcome to Log Cabin on Big Creek. You and your family will be very comfortable in our creek-side mountain log cabin located in beautiful Highlands, North Carolina. Our cabin is very unique because it sits right next to a very large creek. From both back porches you look right down into the water. We have high-speed internet with WiFi and BlueRay DVD. You will enjoy our secluded location off a private gravel road. The only sounds you'll hear while sitting in our large screened-in porch are the rushing of water from the creek, wind in the trees, and if you're lucky, a trout reaching for a mayfly. The cabin sits at an altitude of over 3,800 ft. so the temperature is at least 10 degrees cooler than Atlanta and there is relatively little humidity! There are wonderful hikes throughout the Highlands/Cashiers area to be enjoyed year round. After your hike you’ll enjoy a soak in our jetted tub. If you're looking for a pet-friendly vacation, you've come to the right spot. We consider all pets except cats.

No Smoking: We have a strict no smoking policy in the cabin. If you smoke outside the cabin please field strip cigarettes and throw the butts in the garbage.

We are very good about keeping the availability calendar up to date.

Pets: We accept dogs that don't tear-up the house and landscaping, however, there is an additional $50.00 charge, per dog, per stay, for interior clean-up and a $100 refundable deposit. Please do your best to pick-up after your dog outside. Please don't leave your dogs in the cabin unattended for long periods of time. Cats are not allowed under any circumstances as the owner is very allergic! Other pets are okay with prior approval. Finally, although our cabin is pet friendly we are not flea friendly! In consideration of all our renters, please make sure your dogs are free of fleas or you will be charged to get rid of them.

Seasons: There is a lot to do all year round in the Highlands/Cashiers area. Off season can be the best time if you like the many hiking trails all to yourself. Leaf Season is spectacular. We often get snow in the winter to be prepared with a 4-wheel drive or chains.

Love staying here but want to keep it a secret!

  • 5 of 5

We stayed here with another family. Our children hung their Eno's on the lower porch, laying in them, talking and looking at stars. Adults sat on upper screened in porch playing cards, having drinks, and listening to the creek streaming. PERFECTION.

The new addition is VERY nice. Huge bathroom. Very large and nice family room.

The "older" cabin is charming and quaint. The downstairs bathroom is small but adequate. Upstairs bathroom is large. Would recommend a pizza cutter to add to kitchen but overall is well equiped. Owners generously allowed us to use their shampoo and condiments in the kitchen. Nice to not have to purchase all of that at the store. We did replenish the laundry detergent.

Location is super....easy access to Highlands and easy drive to Cashiers as well. We explored waterfalls, swimming holes, sliding rocks, shopping, and restaurants. One of our favorite vacations ever! We hope to return at least every summer!

Thank you!!!

Owner's Response: Thank you for the nice review. Owning a cabin is not without hassles but kind words like this makes it all worthwhile.

Wonderful

  • 5 of 5

This was our second visit to the cabin and we were so happy to return. It is exactly what we picture when we imagine a get away to the mountains. The locations is great - so close to both highlands and cashiers and great hiking. Our dogs love the porches and being able to monitor all the wildlife outside. It's a wonderfully cozy place to visit and we can't wait to go back!

Owner's Response: So glad you could come back for a visit, and even happier that we all survived the Irma's wrath.

Perfect getaway home in Highlands

  • 5 of 5

That's the most serene place on the planet and I felt like I was staying at a friend's mountain house where all the details had been attended to with great care. The porch is wonderful with the sounds of the creek below, and the contrast between the old log cabin and the new wing is perfect. Beautifully accomplished visually.

Spacious Creekside Retreat

  • 5 of 5

First of all, working with the owner was a pleasure from start to finish - polite, informative, responsive.

The property is very convenient to Highlands, less than a 10 minute drive to downtown, but secluded so that you feel as if you have the creek and the forest that surrounds the house to yourself. The two decks overlooking the creek run the length of the house and there is ample outdoor seating in the shade. The screened porch was perfect for al fresco dining.

The cottage is really like two houses connected together - the original structure has the rustic mountain appeal we were looking for but all the modern amenities. Very comfortably furnished with a galley kitchen that has all the modern conveniences. The new addition is a bit more contemporary - charming with a huge fireplace and sitting area, big bathroom and laundry room.

I told the Andrew (owner) upon leaving I'd rent again in a heartbeat. Only thing - and this isn't a critique at all just saying - there are a lot of steps both inside and out - so if you have limited mobility (say on a walker) you'd have to be very careful. But even with my old 53 year knees I did fine. We're hoping to be back here sooner than later. Was a truly wonderful week in a wonderful, comfortable, and lovely home. 5 stars!

Great Cabin, Excellent Owner

  • 5 of 5

Our family had a great stay on Big Creek. The cabin is beautiful and the location next to the Creek was exactly what we were looking for. The owner, Andrew, is incredibly responsive and resolved any issues that we had during our stay almost immediately, and without any hesitation. The location next to Highlands was the perfect distance for us - not too close to feel like you're in the town, but close enough that you can just stop by to pick up lunch or go shopping without any hassle. We will caution that the older half of the cabin is where the two main bedrooms are located, and it does not have central air. However, we happened to arrive at the cabin during one of the hottest days in Highlands (it broke 90 degrees that day), and the owner was actually willing to have two AC units installed in the windows just to help us be more comfortable. Now that's good service! Once those were installed, we were much more comfortable on the warmer nights. But overall, just be aware that the older portion of the house is not as nicely appointed as the newer portion, and that the kitchen is very small without much storage space if you are planning to bring your own food. These minor issues don't detract from the amazing location or responsiveness of the owner, so please feel confident that if you rent this cabin, you will love it. We did!
