Bedrooms 3
Property type cottage
Minimum Stay 7 nights

About the property

Living room, corner kitchen, 2 bedrooms, dormitory, bathroom, shower room

This “dreamy” cottage lies just outside the village of Bulan in the Baronnies - a beautiful, unspoilt area of rolling hills rising up against a backcloth of wild mountain peaks. Both the Roman spa town of Bagnères-de-Bigorre and the Biarritz-Toulouse motorway are about 30 min’s drive.

Set in its own meadows, with gorgeous views to the south and east, the cottage is quiet and peaceful. With only birdsong, the tinkle of distant cowbells and the occasional roar of a rutting stag, this is a wonderful place to relax, bird watch, barbeque on the terrace or swim in the river nearby.

The cottage is more spacious than it appears. Rustic, simply furnished and full of character (large open fire, exposed beams and colourful rugs scattered across warm wooden floors) it’s romantic for two but comfortable for six.

Downstairs: Living room/kitchen approx. 20ft sq. – the well-equipped fitted kitchen has cooker, fridge, microwave and washing machine. Bedroom (double bed). Bathroom.

Upstairs: Bedroom (double bed). Landing dormitory (four single beds). Shower room.

There are electric radiators and a store of logs to keep you cosy in the cooler months (surcharge).

Linen and towels for one couple is included in the price. Further linen is available for hire at £12 per person. Please state your requirements on the booking form.

Outside: Natural hillside garden with sun-loungers - the perfect spot to take your tea and watch the sun rise over the mountains. Terrace with patio furniture and brick barbeque – a perfect spot to sip wine and cook up a feast. The sunsets are stunning, and with no light pollution the night sky is thick with stars.

A path behind the house leads you on a gentle hillside walk up Le Broucca (village sheep, cows and horses graze freely in summer) for a fabulous 360° view of mountains, hills and the patchwork of pastures that carpet the valleys.

The nearest bar/épicerie is at Laborde (5 mins drive), with a variety of shops at Capvern (15 mins), and markets and a full range of shops, supermarkets, bars, restaurants etc. at Lannemezan and Bagnères (both about 30 mins).

For those who love history and culture, the Château de Mauvezin and Abbaye de l’Escaladieu with its regular medieval entertainments are close by. Foodies, fill your baskets in the gorgeous markets at Lannemezan and Bagnères-de-Bigorre, or for real luxury, venture into the thermal spa (Acquensis) with its pool terrace views of the mountains. The sacred sanctuary of Lourdes is about an hour’s drive and the bastide towns of the Gers: Marciac, Galan and many more are close enough for a day’s visit.

For more action and adventure there is walking for all levels of fitness in the Baronnies and the higher mountains, some on well-marked trails, some with expert guides. There is tennis, golf, horse riding, climbing, paragliding, fishing in mountain rivers and water sports on nearby lakes and in winter, you can ski the 56km of pistes at La Mongie - all an hour or so’s drive away. In summer, 73 marked-off road routes (over 1159kms) are paradise for cyclists and mountain bikers. The Tour de France often passes over the nearby Cols de Tourmalet, Hautecam and Aspin drawing excited crowds from around the world. You can visit the nearby crystal caves (Gouffres d’Espaross), the awesome Cirque de Gavarnie (UNESCO World Heritage site), the Pont d’Espagne and the wild and beautiful lakes of the Néovielle Nature Reserve. There is so much to do - far too much for one visit.
