About Alun & Sheelagh Crewe
Alun and Sheelagh both hail from Wales, Sheelagh from Aberystwyth, Alun from Newport. We have both lived abroad during our working lives but wanted a base back in the UK that we could return to whenever we had a spare weekend. We fell in love with the Isle of Wight when visiting relatives there. Our goal, in sharing Smugglers with guests is to provide a home-from-home. A place where you can immediately relax, feel at home, and start your holiday. We hope to have you as our guests and look forward to meeting you. Alun & Sheelagh Crewe

Why Alun & Sheelagh Crewe chose Ventnor
We spent a long time looking for our perfect getaway retreat on the Isle of Wight. We had homed in on Vetnor as one of our favourite places to be. The strong community feeling and lively town centre, the beauty of the beach and the famous 'microclimate' that promotes almost tropical weather and the friendly welcome in every pub and restuarant we entered. All of these things led us to focus our search in Ventnor. We looked at, literally, dozens of houses before falling in love with 'Smugglers'. It's character and homely feel together with being on a quiet street yet only a few yards from the town centre made it an obvious choice. The previous owners, Matt and Sally Clark, had sepnt a lot of time restoring and improving the cottage with high-quality modern appliances and decor that didn't detract from the 200 year-old character. It's a philosophy we intend to continue.
What makes this Cottage unique
Smugglers is a 4-bedroomed cottage only 50 metres from the town centre and 400 metres from the beach, yet in the very quiet street of Tulse Hill. It was dubbed 'Smugglers' because of the strange trap door in the back bedroom which we imagine was used when the Revenue Men came to call. It has a private enclosed rear garden with patio and chairs and a gas barbecue for outdoor dining and cozy log-burning fire for cool evenings. The kitchen is well-equipped with high-quality appliances and there are games, DVDs, Freesat and high-speed wireless internet connection for your entertainment. The central position means that the nearest restaurant (Foggs) is only 30m away and the nearest pub (The Crab and Lobster) only 100m.

Isle of Wight
Lovely cottage in beautiful Ventnor. Spotlesssly clean and well equipped. We appreciated the fresh flowers, comprehensive information from the owners by email and the welcome pack. A great base from which to appreciate the Isle of Wight.
Thanks for your kind comments Amber. We're glad you enjoyed your stay and hope to welcome you back sometime in the future. Alun & Sheelagh

Cosy cottage on a very steep hill!
We stayed at Smugglers over Christmas with our two children, my husband's parents and the family dog and we loved it. The four bedrooms were brilliant, allowing the children to have their own room. The cottage is well equipped, warm (with a log burner and very effective central heating) and situated in the middle of the town, so very handy for the Co-Op, cafes and other shops.
Alun and Sheelagh are very helpful and easy to get hold of; the welcome bits and pieces were particularly welcome and made it feel very personal.
The only downside - Smugglers is on a VERY steep hill and whilst the worst part of the climb is only a few yards up from the high street, my in-laws, who are in their 70s, found it very challenging: going down is harder than going up. That said, it's impossible to avoid steep hills in Ventnor and we definitely intend to go back.
Hi Jane. Thank you for your complimentary review. We're glad you enjoyed Smugglers and had a good Christmas break. Your reference to the steep hill will be helpful. We refer to it in our details but guests are still surprised at the challenge of walking up from the high street. The topography of Ventnor is one of its charms and challenges. All the best ,Alun and Sheelagh
Perfect location in Ventnor!
Arrived Wednesday to a spotless cottage, beautifully furnished & equipped throughout. All Ventnor's amenities in easy reach.
Explored the Island for 2 days & left on the Saturday.
Would definitely recommend Smuggler's to anyone, especially for families!!
We shall definitely be back!!
Smugglers is in the centre of the lovely seaside town of Ventnor. Moments from the high street, it is a short walk to Ventnor's restaurants, pubs and coffee shops, as well as the beach and the Esplanade. The pretty villages of Bonchurch, Niton and Shanklin are also close by. Ventnor golf course is less than 1.5 miles away, with the most stunning views across glorious countryside to the sea. Only a short drive away is Queen Victoria's beloved home Osborne House, the historic Carisbrooke Castle, Yarmouth Castle as well as family attractions like Blackgang Chine and the Donkey Sanctuary. The wilder beaches to the west offer diving, paragliding, surfing and kayaking. For walkers, there are over 500 miles of very well signposted footpaths on the Island, more per square mile than any other English county! It is not far to The Needles and Alum Bay, Tennyson Down, Newtown Nature Reserve and much more. Yarmouth and Cowes are no more than 30 minutes by car, for those who love their sailing.
