Our now very large extended family came to the Arundel house for the first time this year, although we'd been renting smaller houses in the area for over ten years. We wanted to try a place big enough to hold all of us. The house was more or less what we expected, although perhaps closer to a busy road then we were used to. It was clean and well-maintained, and the owner (although living out of state) was easy to reach on email.
We had a very good time and were very happy with the 'value' of the accommodations. It's hard to be disappointed in this area of Maine when the weather is good!
Unfortunately, when we returned home and asked about the return of our substantial safety deposit, to our complete bewilderment, the owner accused of having had dogs in the house! This was based upon the 'word' of her cleaners--who claimed there was dog hair all over the house--enough to justify many extra hours of cleaning. As a result, she deducted one half of our deposit (including a substantial amount for a broken light fixture in the only room we didn't use! However, it was at least imaginable that one of the kids was in there and didn't tell us, etc.). We do not own any dogs and we did not have any on the premises during the week we stayed there (nor did we see any dog hair when we thoroughly cleaned the house before leaving), so this accusation came a real (costly) surprise.
Since the owner is not in Maine, she can only rely on the accounts of her local cleaners (who did not take any pictures), but I would be very cautious about sorting out how the deposit is managed before renting here again. I would recommend that a third party come and take a quick look at the house on the day of departure to confirm the state of the premises and head off any phantom dogs and phantom dog hairs. We have a long history of renting in the area (and never with dog/s) and this is first time this has happened to us. It made for a very unpleasant ending to an otherwise wonderful week in Maine.
This problem with the phantom dogs makes me rate our overall experience much lower than it would otherwise be. I hope the owner can find a way to ensure the same kind of problem doesn't arise with future guests, as trust is an integral part of these kinds of rental arrangements, and the Arundel House is certainly a very nice spot for large families.
Perfect home for us to prepare for my daughters wedding. The home gave us the opportunity to separate the younger and older generations yet be all together. The home and grounds are spacious, quiet and private. Perfect for family get together. Love the outdoor fire pit and watching the fireflies in the meadow. Cynthia was wonderful to work with and her home is warm and cozy. I use to live in KPT and this was the perfect place to truly feel back home again. Thank you soooo Cynthia!!!!
Wonderful vacation home, absolutely charming through and through. Cynthia was easy to work with, flexible and accommodating. Perfect location: a short easy drive (7-8 minutes) to downtown Kennebunkport - loved kayaking and ice cream there - and two more minutes to the ocean. Super close to restaurants and the grocery store - everything was easy to get to. Backyard that was great for the kids, and a gas grill and very cool fire pit for cool nights. We stayed in the clapboard part of the house, what a wonderful and sweet cottage feel. Pics don't do the downstairs justice! Enormous fireplace in the center of it fills the space with charm. The kids and I didn't turn on the TV even once. Great bedroom spaces for parents and young kids - the full-size beds on that side were super comfortable, and we didn't have any privacy issues. Buyer beware - no electrical sockets in the clapboard bathroom, though there were extension cords. Found it didn't matter at all. We LOVED our time here - easy simple living with everything moments away. This location and house, in particular, was ideal for us. It let our vacation have quiet and serene, sunny mornings following late nights, in a space that felt entirely ours. We hope to return next year for another wonderful experience. Thank you Cynthia. We thoroughly enjoyed our week long stay at your home. The history of this historical home is present throughout every room and space. We were in awe! In Texas we havent experienced an opportunity to cozy up with a 300 year charm and we are so grateful for this opportunity and memories created. We wanted for nothing- as you have provided within the home everything one would need- linens, kitchen items, beach items, so much more. Took us a while to get the hang of the recycling- but by end of stay even our 4yr old was catching on!
You have a beautiful slice of history and we had the best time staying here and experiencing Maine for our first time!
Thank you again for allowing us to visit!
