SEA & RIVER HOUSE is an attractive welcoming home sitting 150 feet above the ocean and one mile from the Navarro River inlet. We are located 130 miles north of San Francisco and 10 miles south of Mendocino and close to Anderson Valley's many wineries. We have wonderfully useable space in a smaller footprint. Come see us!
To the south of the house is a view of magical Brokeback Cove and beyond to the Point Arena lighthouse which flashes at night. North a mile, where the Navarro River (known for steelhead fishing) meets the ocean, is an extensive sand beach to explore and throw a frisbee or build a driftwood fort. Swimming "holes" ( a favorite of our kids) can be found at several points along the Navarro River in the redwood forest.
The house offers four bedrooms (2 queen beds, one full, 3 twins ), a game room with futon, fireplace and outside chiminea, hot tub, two bathrooms,, and expansive decks on two levels. Up to ten people can be accommodated. It affords wonderful space for people to gather or to separate and find a quiet spot to read. Kids of all ages can congregate in the lower level game room to play foosball, throw darts or watch a movie on the wall mounted large screen TV. Moving outside to the lower level deck, they can soak in the large hot tub, roast marshmallows in the chiminea or sit watching the hypnotic spinning of the copper windmill set in the ocean side yard. Three bedrooms and the game room have cable TV plus a stock of movie dvds At night the star display is amazing for those from light polluted cities.
Living Areas: The interior of the upper level of the house is old growth redwood.. The upper level includes the dining room. living room, kitchen, three bedrooms (one a "bunk room") and full bath. The lower level, reached by a stunning spiral staircase, contains the game room and 4th bedroom and 2nd bathroom. Wifi is available at an extra charge. Most people receive cell phone service.
The kitchen is fully equipped with a new gas stove, new set of pots and pans, a good stock of cooks utensils, and melamine dishes from Crate and Barrel. On the upper deck is a large Weber for outside grilling. The kitchen sink back splash is glass tiled and the view out the kitchen door is of the ocean. Even dish washing gets better.
The living room has two comfortable couches with reading lamps and centers around the wood burning fireplace. A small bench doubles as a coffee table or added seating, There is a small but mighty sound system. A ceiling fan cools the room at the end of warm days
The dining area over looks the cove and seats eight at an oval table. It is also a great spot to play board games. There is additional outdoor dining (except in winter months) for 4 at a wicker resin table set on the upper deck. The lower deck has a 2 person bistro table where you can sip coffee ( that can be brewed in large bathroom next to the bedroom) or wine or have a private dinner for two. Table is stored in winter.
Bedrooms: Every queen or double bed is covered with a featherbed or foam topper and then a beautiful quilt. The upper level master bedroom has a ceiling fan. The lower bedroom boasts a canopy bed and vintage oil seascape paintings. Sliding doors open to the lower deck with large flower planters, hot tub etc. Bookcases in each room offer good reads for all tastes. Games are stocked in the "bunk room."
Grounds: In the back (Hwy. 1 side) of the house is a rough picnic table and view of the mountains. In the front (ocean side) is an expanse of ice plant which blooms in bright colors which is edged by an herb garden for cooks. There is a lot of rosemary but also thyme, sage, and other favorite culinary herbs. Beyond the herb plantings is a gate to the cliff promontory with what Pete calls "lover's bench." Great place for photos. A small shore pine hangs off the cliff. The beach at Navarro River can be reached by walking or driving.
Peter has always loved the ocean since he biked around Jones Beach in New York as a child. We are landlocked Wisconsinites who bought the house in 2007 for our retirement. The purchase confused my Minnesota mother, who said: "What's the matter with a nice lake?" It's not the same. We have never seen a more spectacular place and that includes Norwegian fjords. It is one of the world's truly special places.
Peter Anderson purchased this house in 2007
We have long been in love with the indescribable Mendocino coast, and bought the house for our retirement. But, that's 10 years off, and we're renting it out for vacations until then. The property has privacy but is not remote or hard to reach.
Our location, with ocean views to the south, west and north, is truly rare. Guests find the house is attractively decorated and comfortable. It's proximity to Mendocino, which is a timeless community within a historic district, affords boutique shopping and fine dining. Many outdoor activities are available: kayaking, canoeing, horseback riding, biking. and hiking in the redwood forest. And we are an easy drive to Anderson Valley where 30 wineries are located.
Peter and Molly,
This was our second time staying at Sea & River House, and it was again a magnificent experience. The house is beautiful and we enjoyed being able to watch the sunset from the hot tub in the evening. The view of nature is magnificent. The addition of WiFi saved us the choice between worrying and a trip into town. We stayed during the Mendocino music festival which was spectacular. Thank you again for a great vacation.
We had a great time ~ the house is charming and had everything we could have needed. The views are unparalleled, and we were lucky with spectacular weather (a bit of fog the first day, and then sun). We hope to be able to return sometime ~ our French family were enchanted by the beauty of No Cal. Thank you ~~
The Sea and River accommodations were very nice, especially the views of the Pacific! The property is quite large and has a large sloping area from the house to the end of the property located about 150 to 180 feet above the ocean. Quiet location, although we stayed during the first part of the week in late September, so there were only a few neighbors in the area. The accommodations were pretty much as described in the write-up and photos. Very well equipped kitchen, lots of well used utensils, and again, gorgeous views from the living room/dining area. We had 6 persons and had plenty of room for everyone. First floor mattresses were OK, but a bit used (especially the one with a double bed). Master bedroom downstairs was quite acceptable. Loved the wood stove (which was nice to have this time of year) although we did not need or use the outside hot tub. We found just about everything we needed for supplies at the Albion grocery store, and did use the larger supermarket in Mendocino--which has "Thanksgiving" Coffee which, if you never had it, is a "must buy"! We had a great lunch at the North Coast Brewery in Fort Bragg. While the weather was on the cooler side, we did enjoy the large wraparound deck on the main level. As a special side note, it was quite dark at night, which made for some fantastic opportunities for taking Night Sky photos of the Milky Way overlooking the ocean! Would definitely recommend this location and it was a pleasure to spend some time at this location.
However the hot tub did not work, A fuse blew and had no lights going from floor to floor on winding staircase causing my sister to trip and break 2 toes.
Maintenance man never did show up. House keeper could use some help. Coffee pot next to toilet--OMG!!
Our intention was to relax, and relax we did. World class sunsets from a bubbling jacuzzi. A cozy woodstove and the roar of the ocean. Al fresco breakfasts on the balcony. Oh yeah...
Just a wonderful oceanfront house that is perfect for that relaxing getaway.
Comfortable beds, well equipped kitchen and unlimited things to see and do within a short driving distance. Highly suggested, just wished we could have spent more time there.
Found a small restaurant in Ft. Braggs Noyo Harbor called Carine's Fish Grotto that looked small on the outside but a great outside and inside eating area and great seafood.
Perfect for couples looking for that romantic getaway, families for that unforgettable fun place to visit each year or anglers, Sea & River House is an experience you will not want to miss.
