About Andrew Davies
Hi, I'm Andrew owner of Mandevilla. I currently live in Dorchester, Dorset with my wife Emma and 4 children; a daughter aged 11, twin 8 year old girls and my baby boy aged 7. I grew up in Cardiff, Wales and studied Engineering at Loughborough University. I married my wife Emma (from Ruislip) 16 years ago and we moved to Weymouth where we set up her Estate Agency, Direct Moves, which still trades successfully now. I am based at home and spend most of my time divided between childcare and restoring our 18th century Manor House.
Andrew Davies purchased this Villa in 2004
Why Andrew Davies chose Chiclana de la Frontera
We visited this area of Spain one weekend in 2003 with a budget of 100,000 Euros with the intention of buying a villa for family holidays. We ended up spending two and a half times as much to buy Mandevilla off plan. We realised the location was perfect knew that this modern spacious villa would offer the perfect base for our Holidays on the Costa de la Luz. We have shared the villa with over 100 holidaymakers over the last 9 years and Mandevilla still looks fantastic!
What makes this Villa unique
The builder responsible for Mandevilla clearly had very high standards; rarely the case for villas in rural parts of Andalusia. The villa always feels fresh, clean and new. The garden is professionally maintained and laid to lawn so children can run and play freely. The pool was built to the same high standards as the villa and carefully maintained and chemically balanced by a dedicated pool contractor. The suburb of Las Veguetas is perfectly situated with easy access to all the attractions of the Costa de la Luz (especially the beach). The necessary amenities are also really convenient with a choice of supermarkets including Lidl for the cost conscious. The neighbours are quiet and friendly. I believe we were very lucky to have discovered Mandevilla!

Very nice property
The house is spacious and well maintained. We didn’t miss anything. There are four bedrooms with two beds each. They are small, but our kids enjoyed not having to share a room. The kitchen is completely and well equipped, everything was clean and functioning. The pool is huge and deep, thus suited for serious swimming. We enjoyed the garden and the garden furniture. Maybe they overdo a bit with the irrigation: be careful to really remove everything during the night, otherwise you find it soaked with water next morning. There is a barbecue grill which we were power-users of.
The location is a good value for the rental price. It is quiet and with friendly neighbors, though a 10 minutes drive to the beach or a supermarket, as obvious from the description. It is very nice to go to Cadiz in the evening to have some Montaditos, less than 25 minutes drive and easy parking (in October).
We have been really lucky with the weather, early October it was still sunny and warm, though rather windy.
To sum up: highly recommended! We have just booked again for 2018. Thank you Andrew!
Dear Sven, Thank you for providing a fair and detailed review. I think it gives an excellent summary of a stay at Mandevilla in October. I’ll talk to Angie regarding the sprinkler system; necessary in August but maybe overkill in October!
Looking forward to welcoming you back this year.
Very well maintained property, difficult to find faults. I would strongly recommend it.
The villa was in a very quiet and peaceful area of Chiclana de la Frontera, within easy reach of facilities which one requires when on holiday, shopping and restaurants.
I will not comment on other facilities nearby since we spent all the days in the swimming pool.
A number of points which were not to our satisfaction were; On the first two evenings, we suffered power cuts, however these lasted for about ten minutes. The fact that we could not dispose of paper in the toilets, when using these. (Not accustomed to this ).
We noticed on the second day of our stay, that the pool appeared to have to much chlorine and bathing costumes which had white section, started turning green. Thus we ended up using the same costumes all the time. (This should be looked at). As requested we did not go into the pool with sun-cream. One other aspect was that when using the plates, some where dirty, as if not having been washed. However we realized that if plates when placed in the dishwasher were very close to each other some were not cleaned, thus we spaced these out.
Having stayed in past years between Chiclana and Conil we have had very little problems with mosquito's, this year they were unbearable, even though we had gone prepared and taken mosquito repellent creams and night tablets, everyone suffered from mosquito bites. I understand this cannot be controlled by the agent or owner.
This we considered was our worst nightmare. Will consider going back again next year.
Angela thanks for your kind attention.
Thank you for the feedback.
The cleanliness of our pool is normally highly commended; the pool must have had a bloom of algae. The pool is cleaned weekly by a professional company. The pool company are very happy to address any issues on an emergency basis, and my agent, Angie, always asks clients to contact her if they have any problems.
I'm sorry for your mosquito problem; it is not an issue we have had complaints about before. You must have been unlucky.
I'm glad you'd still be happy to return despite these issues.
Villa was luvly and clean and spacious. Swimming pool was exceptional and clean.
Had a great week at Mandevilla lots of beautiful beaches nearby, and places to visit, Cadiz was beautiful and Jerez was a luvly place to visit. Weather was very hot so didn't need to leave the villa as spent the day in the pool.
Spacious and simply furnished which kept it cool and uncluttered with a spacious garden.
As a family of 7 we had a great time at the villa. Lots of space so we weren't on top of each other. Great garden space so my twin 6 year olds could play football safely away from the pool. The pool was really well looked after ( which has been a problem in the past), big and deep so great for real swimming as well as having fun since we all like the water. Only 10 mins from the fabolous Barossa beach which enabled a great balance with the energy of the beach with the peace of a villa. All in all we had a great time as we always do in this area.
Excellent return visit
Little to add to our 2013 review - the fact that we came back for more says it all, especially as we were lucky enough to stay for 4 weeks this time! Very peaceful setting but within a short drive of La Barrosa beach: great walks along the beach, superb sunsets and plenty of restaurants & bars.
Mandevilla is very comfortable and well equipped. Our son, daughter-in-law & 15 month old grand-daughter joined us for a week and we had all the facilities we needed. The grounds are really extensive which gives a wonderfully spacious feel - many other villas can feel "boxy". The pool is brilliant. Oh, and keep an eye out for hoopoe birds in the garden. Highly recommended.
Wonderful Stay in Mandevilla
My wife and I had a wonderful relaxing two week stay in Mandevilla. The villa was spacious, clean, well equipped and set in a large private garden ideal for families. The beautiful large pool provided both a source of exercise and welcome relief from the heat in the afternoon.
Both Andrew, the owner, and his agent Angie were extremely helpful and friendly. On asking where the nearest Internet cafe was to print of our return Ryanair boarding passes, Angie immediately offered to do it for us. They were duly delivered to us later that day.
The villa is located in a quiet residential area but is close to supermarkets and several nearby ventas which offer cheap but delicious food and drink. Barossa beach, which must be the best in Spain, is only 5 minutes away by car. Watching sunset sitting on the beautiful soft sand is absolute must. Happy memories!
A car is essential but this gives you freedom to visit so many interesting places nearby. The ancient cities of Cadiz, Jerez and Tarifa are all within easy reach, but don't miss out on trips to Medina Sidonia, Arcos, Conil and Vejer. You will not be disappointed!
We particularly enjoyed shopping at local fresh produce markets and returning home to dine alfreso. I doubt I have ever eaten so well such is the quality and variety on offer.
Being a keen amateur cyclist, I hired a quality road bike from one of several outlets in Novo Sancti Petri and greatly enjoyed using the safe bike lanes and quiet roads in the area.
I cannot recommend this property highly enough and we are currently planning a return trip next June.
Angie is typically 100% efficient; our villa and guests are always in safe hands with her. My family and I are staying for a week in April next year and I think we will follow your lead on the cycle hire. Something we haven't tried yet!
Great review thank you. We look forward to welcoming you back.
From Tarifa, the most southerly point of Europe, the Costa de la Luz runs like a golden ribbon west wards to Cádiz and beyond to the border with Portugal. The Spanish themselves favour this Atlantic shoreline. The sand is finer and a more golden colour than the neighbouring Costa del Sol. The typical beaches here are more spread-out and probably backed by sand dunes and pine trees. This part of the coast has not seen the high-rise hotel development of other areas. The temperatures are slightly milder in the winter, the air is clear and fresh and the colours are brighter and of very special intensity. This is why it is called the 'Coast of the light'.
The town of Chiclana has a population of 60,000 people but it still holds onto its village atmosphere. You will find public transport, Medical facilities, good shopping and markets, and an abundance of restaurants and bars. Chiclana a is a high quality tourist destination.
Other Activities: quad biking, go-carting
