Awaken to a sun-drenched bedroom view of Lake Coeur d'Alene. Sip morning coffee in one of the lake view sun rooms. Take an early, refreshing dip in the lake, have lunch at a sidewalk cafe or the incomparable Hudson's Hamburgers, and plan a day at the beach or seeing the sights. Later, walk across the park for a supper cruise or an evening of downtown dining and entertainment; then stroll home with the moonlight reflecting across the shimmering water. Fall asleep, stars shining through the skylight. The recently refurbished Gumprecht House is situated on the shore of beautiful Lake Coeur d' Alene in picturesque Northern Idaho. It offers spectacular views with comfortable and spacious family-friendly accommodations, plus close proximity to downtown shops and restaurants as well as the amenities of the famous Coeur d'Alene Resort. Enjoy water sports, lake cruises, bike trails, hiking, golf, antique shops, museums, snow skiing and nature's beauty.
History:: The Gumprecht House sits on property once part of Fort Sherman, founded in 1878 to protect settlers, one of a string of forts built in response to the 1876 Custer massacre. After the fort was disbanded, the property was auctioned off. It was then subdivided in 1905. The lot was purchased in 1906 by the Nevers family and the house built in 1907. It was the first private beachfront house, had the pick of the lots and, consequently, an unsurpassed view. For many years the house was occupied, then owned, by the Graue family who graciously allowed the Gumprechts and others to use the beach. The Gumprecht family acquired the property in 1977 and extensively remodeled in 1981. Elderly grandchildren of the original owner knocked on the door in 1982 to tour the changes and warmly approved. One of them had actually been born in the original master bedroom. They had all passed by the house on annual summer visits to Coeur d'Alene but had not been in the house since before 1920.
Bike Storage: Bikers should like our property as there is a side entrance that proceeds directly to the finished basement which is suitable for keeping their bikes. There is a bathroom and shower in the basement as well that could be useful for runners or others. The Ironman Triathlon starting point is across the street and the 24-mile Centennial trail passes directly in front of the house. And, yes, we have a large pasta pot.
Family room & game room: To provide a break from the elegant main floor spaces the back porch was enclosed years ago, creating a casual and comfortable family area just off of the kitchen and breakfast nook. It contains an HDTV and DVDs as well as a broadband Internet connection for your laptop. See an earlier description of the game room located in the basement.

Dr Donald G. Gumprecht was a resident of the Fort Grounds from 1951, growing up a block away from the beach, down Military Drive in a house now known as the Doctors' Inn. He swam nearly every summer day at 'Graue's beach' and in 1977 was fortunate enough to purchase the house and beach property from the Graue family. In 1990 he relocated to Springfield, Illinois, and kept a caretaker in the house until 2005. Since that time, the house has been offered as a vacation rental for the enjoyment of a wide variety of individuals, families, and groups. Every attention has been given to making the house enjoyable for visitors of all ages and interests. Universally positive reviews have been very gratifying.

Best location on the beach in historic CDA
Wonderful original 1906 4 story home on the beach of the old fort grounds next to the park. Great for families with lots of nooks and crannies for children to explore. Just a short and safe walk to the many shops and restaurants in family oriented downtown CDA. The home had all the modern conveniences, good internet, and amazing views of the lake from comfortable patio furniture on the front porches. The property mngr was very nice and understanding when my kids set off the alarm before we entered, the police arrived in minutes with smiles drawn. Kids learned to “look don’t touch” we all had a great time.
So glad your family had a good time. We aim to have something for all ages. I bet your kids loved the large play room in the basement where everything is meant to be "touched" and they could make all the noise they wanted without bothering anybody. Thank you for the kind words!
Excellent home; Excellent location; Excellent view; Excellent small city.
Thank you very much for the kind words. We try to make sure there is something for everyone to enjoy regardless of weather. The lake is always fascinating - forever undulating and moving.
We had 2 families of 5 that fit perfectly. Beach literally across the road. Amazing views, great beach, walking distance to marina and restaurants, perfect location. The house is a little bit older but everything is still in good shape and fits the location. Definitely would look to stay here again.
Thank you so much for the kind review. With 2 families of five I presume there were kids who, when they weren't at the beach, had a chance to occupy themselves in the basement game room for the sake of adults. Thanks again.
7 years spent vacationing in this home and great memories made
Great location. House fits lots 10 easily and it is generally very clean. Our family has rented this house for 7 years for a week each summer and all our family. It is right across the street from the lake, a large park with a large playset and is within walking distance to shops downtown and our nightly ice cream run. Also has a fun game room for kids with foosball and video game console. Kitchen is well equipped. Bonus there is a piano in the house. And the agent is super responsive to any issues that may arise during your stay.
Thank you very much for the kind words. I have very much appreciated your return business over the years. It warms my heart to know you and your family have such a good time. I aim to please all ages. I am also very thankful for the constructive suggestions you have made over the years. Meeting your high standards is a source of pride! Thanks again.
Fantastic place for a family gathering
I organized a family reunion to be held the last weekend of July. The home is beautiful, clean, unique, and has an amazing view of the lake. There is a sitting area that you can sit and watch the lake and people walking by for hours from inside in the cool a/c. The beds were amazing and comfortable. Everyone slept great and had plenty of room. The kitchen and pantry were stocked well. Tons of room for everyone to relax. The game room was fantastic for the few kids we had over. The family loved that they could walk to town along the lake. I would recommend this to anyone who comes to CDA! I wish I could do Thanksgiving in this home it is so beautiful :)
Thank you very much for the wonderful review. We really have made an effort to provide a delightful vacation experience for everyone - our family included since it is OUR vacation home as well. You are right that Thanksgiving is a great time to be enjoy the house with a dining room view of the lake throughout dinner.
Fabulous location and amenities!
We merged two families together for a family vacation with kids ages 7-15 and everyone had such a great time! While everyone spent most of their time outdoors, we had more than plenty of space for everyone to have a space for privacy or just to gather their thoughts. We loved having the teens play the piano and share their music throughout the house. The park down the street was so convenient as was the downtown area for a walk to coffee and restaurants. We would love to stay again next year!
Thank you so much for the kind words. We do try to provide a top notch accommodation with something for all ages to enjoy. It has been very enjoyable for us, in return, to receive all the positive comments in these reviews as well as the log book. It makes it more fun to get the house ready each spring. When I replenish the dollies, I can just visualize a little girl not able to part with her new friend. By the way, the piano is my daughter's from when she lived in Chicago - a surprise birthday gift when she had expected the delivery of a used TV. I should add that I was pleasantly gratified this past year, when a Homeowner's Insurance inspector gave us zero demerits and, when I asked him, had zero suggestions to improve either the safety ("you have made it safe") or the physical status of the house and property. Shockingly, my insurance premium dropped 25%.
