A Highlight of our Travels

  • 5 of 5

I’m from the U.S. On our 12-day tour of South and Southwestern England in early July, our stay at Westerly house on Downs View was a highlight of the trip. We immediately relaxed into a homey familiarity but in the comfort of a high quality hotel. The house is nestled in a row of historic Victorian terrace houses in the best of Cornwall’s seaside country. The classic exterior face of the home gives way to a huge interior with every modern comfort and amenity built in.

Spacious, well appointed common rooms and kitchen; Quiet, sound insulated, warm bedrooms; Sharp, clean-cut bathrooms; and windows for outdoor light everywhere you want, which is pleasantly surprising in a row house. The backyard is walled high for privacy and wind-protected barbecues. I try to read up on local history when I travel, and I’m pretty sure the blue slate floors in the kitchen and rear lounge pay homage to local Cornwall quarries. The house is wi-fied for sound, so I could play my own music (pretty much as loud as I liked). It's an easy place to kick off your shoes and decompress.

And just steps away, out the front door is Bude, the sea, the beach, heathered bluffs, low-tide strolls, swims in the seaside pool, golf on the links, cycling and drinks a the nearby pub. We even found the Zuma Jay surf shack counterpart to the original Zuma Jay in Malibu, California. My twenty something daughters loved the company they found and enjoyed a good-humored chorus of the U.S. national anthem on July 4th from the boys at the bar. I only wish we could have stayed longer and brought more people to fill up the house.

One minus for out-of-country tourists was getting to Bude from the nearest train station, which is about 35 miles southeast. I imagine this is a plus to UK natives. For just that reason, it probably draws fewer foreign visitors than places like Newquay.

A stunning house

  • 5 of 5

Amazing house! Beautifully appointed and wonderfully equipped. Hi-tech everything! So comfortable and spacious. Plenty of room for all of us to spread out. Extremely clean and beautifully maintained. Really close to a fabulous beach, coastal walks, cafes and restaurants. Short walk to the supermarket and into town. I would recommend this house 100% for families looking for a luxurious place to stay at the seaside!

A wonderful house!

  • 5 of 5

Three generations of our family had a wonderful time together based on this superbly appointed holiday home. Not only does the house have everything one could wish for (to a very high standard) but the beaches, coastal path and town (including Sainsbury’s) are within very easy reach. Highly recommended!

The perfect holiday home away from home.

  • 5 of 5

As a family who love Cornwall, love self catering but love a bit more luxury when on holiday Westerley House was fantastic. With 5 bedrooms, some with seating areas and 3 lounges, as a family we had plenty of room for us to relax and the kids to do their own thing. The local beaches are brilliant we loved the Sea pool on Summerleaze Beach which is10 minutes walk. Also on the nights I didn't want to cook just a short walk into town. We had lovely evenings with the log burner lit in the great family room which is over looked by the kitchen so you can cook and still be part of the party (amazing kitchen by the way). Equally we enjoyed fresh coffee in the sunny lounge to read the paper in the morning. I can not recommend this house enough, we will be back.

This stunning house is exactly what you would wish for in the perfect getaway. Not only is it situated a hop, skip and a jump from a beautiful beach and some stunning scenery along the coastal walks, but the owners seem to have thought of everything to make it a luxurious home from home. Other reviewers have mentioned how well-equipped the kitchen is, how brilliant it is to have three separate lounges, (essential for large groups!) enormous widescreen TVs, the SONOS system, and the comfortable bedrooms I won't go on. What I will say is that from the moment of arrival to the time of leaving, it was like being in your own five-star hotel but without having to conform to hotel rules! Total relaxation and comfort to the highest standard. Hoping to return soon.

Wonderful house for a big group, great location

  • 5 of 5

Westerly House is really perfect for a big family group holiday (grandparents, parents and children in our case) - plenty of space for everyone to do their own thing in the 3 separate lounges, although the big front lounge is gorgeous with the sun shining in (with a real fire for the not so sunny days!). The open plan kitchen and dining area are spacious and you can seat 16 at the dining table. The kitchen has high quality, modern appliances, including a huge hob and 3 ovens - certainly big enough to get a family meal for 16 prepared and cooked. The espresso coffee machine was popular in the morning (just add beans!).

There are 2 large widescreen TVs with satellite and blu-ray players to keep the kids (and adults) happy if the weather is not so great - but it's only a couple of minutes walk to Crooklets beach to let off some steam - great for paddling, swimming, building dams or sand castles, rock pooling or surfing.

The whole house has hi-speed broadband internet via the wi-fi, and there's a Sonos system for listening to music from your phone / ipad or your internet music service.

It's a short walk into Bude itself for shopping or a good range of restaurants (we liked Life's a Beach for seafood and a great view of the harbour).

The bedrooms are spacious and comfy - the master suite has a balcony with views ofer the golf course and to the sea.

All in all a wonderful relaxing holiday - we will be back!

Bude offers good shopping, a good array of restaurants and pubs. Splash swimming pool has a flume and health suite, and there is a leisure complex for bowling and indoor play. Boats can be hired on Bude canal and there is windsurfing, sailing, kayaking (either just hire or book lessons) at Lower Tamar Lake. We have an arrangement with the local Links course, Bude and North Cornwall, for our guests and there are good courses at nearby Holsworthy, St Enedoc and the Jack Nicklaus designed St Mellion. Widemouth Bay is considered one of the best surfing beaches in the area and we can arrange lessons for beginners and improver's. Bude has two superb beaches, Summerleaze and Crooklets, both ideal for bathing and surfing and Bude has one of the few remaining sea pools in the country which is perfect for youngsters when the waves are a little fierce. Lifeguards patrol most beaches and the pool throughout the summer months. There are outdoor pursuit centres, tennis, squash, horse riding and more
