Local Area

Our holiday accommodation is located just north of the village of Newton-under-Rawcliffe, approximately 6 miles from the bustling market town of Pickering - a perfect location to explore the Yorkshire Coast and North York Moors National Park.

We are set in 42 acres of rolling pasture surrounded by wide open spaces and stunning scenery.

The nearest village, Newton-upon-Rawcliffe has an excellent traditional village inn called the "White Swan” which serves meals; also there is a small cafe - less than 1.5 miles from Rawcliffe House. In the village of Newton-upon-Rawcliffe there is a play area with swings, climbing equipment and an astroturf pitch for football, basketball or tennis.

There also is the New Inn at Cropton (4 miles) - well known for its tasty food and refreshing local real ales brewed on-site.

The famous steam trains of the North York Moors Railway run between Pickering and Grosmont - the nearest station is about a mile away on foot. With the magnificent steam engines, beautiful rural stations and smartly uniformed staff, a visit to the North Yorkshire Moors Railway is like taking a step back in time. From the smoke and steam pouring from the engines to the cosy wood-panelled carriages and friendly conductor service, the railway is both lovingly preserved and charmingly authentic. It's also the perfect starting point for a day out, whether you're travelling between the rugged Yorkshire villages, hiking on the wind swept moors or spending a day by the seaside in Whitby.

The nearest town is Pickering (6 miles 10-15 min drive) and is well known locally for its excellent restaurants, coffee shops and traditional inns, offering something to eat and drink for every taste and budget. This lovely Yorkshire town has a wide variety of family owned shops, bakers, butchers, supermarket, restaurants, cafes, pubs, take-aways, the steam railway and its very own castle and museum. There is also a swimming pool and sports centre.

Other local villages and market towns such as Helmsley and Kirkbymoorside and many small picture postcard villages such as Hutton-le-Hole, where you will find the Ryedale Folk Museum are only a short drive away.

Or if you want to escape the crowds completely, the peaceful North York Moors are right on your doorstep - hundreds of miles of fantastic walking in stunning scenery. Or why not park up, have a picnic and let the children play in the streams?

For those looking for culture, why not visit Castle Howard, one of England's grandest Baroque mansions and gardens.

There are some wonderful towns and villages along the Yorkshire Coast to explore including Scarborough, Whitby, Robin Hoods Bay and Staithes.

The medieval city of York with its famous Minster, city walls, Jorvik Viking Centre, National Railway Museum and York Racecourse is only a short drive away.

If you visit us in springtime, we are only a short drive away from Farndale - famous for its wonderful display of daffodils.

Travel back in time to wartime Britain at the award winning Eden Camp or visit the family theme park at Flamingo Land for a fun day out.

Also there is the famous Dalby Forest, where you can hire bikes from the Purple Mountain Bike Centre to explore the many trails and tracks. Dalby is a World Class Mountain Biking venue. “Go Ape” is the tree top adventure, taking you high into the trees. There are also lots of quiet walks, picnic areas and plenty of space to play.

If you are feeling energetic, we are also not far from Ability Outdoors - the Outdoor Activity Centre for quad biking, orienteering, archery, canoeing, paint balling and other exciting adventures.

For those who enjoy gardens why not go to Helmsley Walled Garden or The Walled Garden at Scampston and Scampston Hall and Gardens. Or you could have a cup of tea at Yorkshire Lavender, Yorkshire's Premier Multi Award-Winning Lavender Farm at Terrington or Wolds Way Lavender with its own unique steam fired Lavender Essential Oil Distillery at Wintringham.

If you enjoy historical sites there is Pickering Castle and discover how this splendid 13th century castle was used throughout the centuries. This tourist attraction in the heart of the North York Moors National Park has been a royal hunting lodge, holiday home and a stud farm by a succession of medieval kings.

Helmsley Castle where you can discover how the castle evolved over the centuries, from a mighty medieval fortress to a luxurious Tudor mansion, to a Civil War stronghold and a romantic Victorian ruin.

There is also Scarborough Castle with its 2,500 year history, stunning location and panoramic views over the dramatic Yorkshire coastline.

Carrying on the historical theme, if peace and tranquillity is what you seek from a family day out in Yorkshire, then Rievaulx Abbey is the perfect choice. Set in a remote valley in the North York Moors National Park, Rievaulx is one of the most complete, and atmospheric, of England's abbey ruins. It's no wonder it's one of the most popular visitor attractions in the North.

Set on a headland high over the popular seaside town, Whitby Abbey is the perfect choice for a great value day trip in Yorkshire. It's easy to see how Bram Stoker was inspired by its gothic splendour when writing Dracula. This is one of the most atmospheric visitor attractions on the Yorkshire coast.

Whatever you enjoy doing, there is something for everyone in this wonderful part of North Yorkshire.
