The fall foliage is something that can't be missed and the perfect opportunity for some amazing pictures. With winter comes downhill skiing, cross-country skiing and snowmobiling. Oak Mountain Ski Resort is just a 10 minute drive and the perfect place for learning to ski. No crowds! If you're a competitive skier, Gore Mountain is only a 35 minute drive, and Lake Placid will really test your skills (two hour drive). Cross country skiing is available on the local hiking trails or at nearby Lapland.
We were enchanted with the ease of the rental and the beauty of the well appointed home, just a short walk to the lake. Everything was so comfortable and the owners were so very helpful. I highly recommend this house!
We LOVED our stay! Photos don't do this home justice. It is absolutely beautiful! A top quality home. Decor is beautiful, beds are comfortable, everything is clean and new, it's cozy and romantic. Perfect for much needed rest and relaxation. Part of our stay was very hot and the central AC or ceiling fans were a much loved bonus. The owners are warm and friendly.
The town of Wells is very quiet. Perfect for us. We spent most of our "sight-seeing" time in Speculator with family (20 minutes away) or Lake George (one hour away) but are very easy drives.
This has been our favorite rental so far. Everything was perfect. We had no problems at all. We hope to rent again.
Thank you for sharing this beautiful home.
We stayed in this beautiful home for 9 nights in August two years ago. It was a wonderful stay in an absolutely gorgeous home! Our four kids enjoyed themselves immensely. We roasted marshmallows in the backyard, played fuseball, kyaked all around the lake, boated, fished, spent time at the beach and went for runs around the lake many times. The beach in Wells is nice with a life guard on duty and a diving board, it was never crowded. The boat launch is very close to the house which is convenient. The only drawback is the lack of direct lake access, however, with a dock available to use and the launch close it is workable. Let me emphasize that this house is very well kept and very, very nice!!
Overall, we had a good vacation at this cottage but there were a couple things that were distracting that kept it from being "excellent." Those were:
Appliances - The refrigerator was a little loud, the dishwasher did not clean thoroughly...had to rinse dishes real well...and the dryer did not dry too well. The garage door opener was very slow.
Doors - They were a little tricky to lock
However, these were just small distractions. The home was beautiful, the community was nice, the beds were very comfortable and the showers were wonderful.
The owners of the home were extremely nice people and made sure that we had as good of time as we could have. They were top notch people. The house was spotlessly clean when we arrived.
As far as the town of Wells was concerned, it seemed more suited to people who wanted to slow down and relax. Lake Algonquin was a little too small to spend a day on the water, but it was a pretty lake. However we ended up spending most of our time in Speculator and the lakes in that area than in Wells.
Wells is a small quaint town with a homey atmosphere. There are two convenience stores with gas as well as a couple nice restaurants. During the summer months, the town has an assortment of activities including Old Homes Days, garage sale weekend and Saturday evening concerts. There are numerous activities to do within an hours drive including the Adirondack Museum, North Creek Railroad and Great Camp Sagamore.
