Lakeside retreat with pool, hot tub & huge gardens in picturesque countryside
Set in the Limousin national park on the edge of the Forest of Rochechouart, surrounded by open fields and woodland and just 30 minutes from Limoges airport, Lac de la Grange is a very private, secluded and peaceful retreat. Most days the only cars to pass by are our neighbouring farmer and the postman! Included within the extensive private land which surrounds our property the picturesque fishing lake is for the use of guests only.
The whole property is typical of French construction in the area with very thick stone walls & shuttered windows which make the interior cool & comfortable in summer and warm & cosy in winter. Built within a section of the barn, the very spacious accommodation is offset, attached to the rear of our house. With 4 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms, where we can accommodate up to 10 guests, a private entrance & parking to the front and to the rear a south-facing, private decked, dining/seating area leading to the garden & pool areas and with views across the orchard and open countryside beyond.. The accommodation was lovingly created and thoughtfully furnished and retains many original such as the original stone walls and a large fireplace with wood burner.
Inside the ground-floor is designed to give wheelchair access and has a large open plan lounge/dining room, a separate modern kitchen area, equipped with electric cooker, microwave & dishwasher, a shower room & toilet, plus a cave-like bedroom with ensuite wet room style bathroom and air-conditioning. On the first floor there are three further bedrooms and a family bathroom. Bedroom 1 sits in the eaves of the house and is a spacious twin with air-conditioning. Bedroom 2 has a four poster bed and juliet balcony overlooking the lake. Bedroom 3 is a large family room with double and bunk beds. The bathroom has a full-sized bath and over bath shower. All bed linen, bathroom and pool towels are provided
Our huge, newly stocked 6 acre private fishing lake has been here since Napoleonic times and is for the use of our guests only. It is naturally spring fed and the depth varies up to 8m. As well as being able to fish from the dam at the deepest end of the lake there are 5 purpose built swims along the north and south banks. Quality fishing tackle is available to hire or of course you can bring along your own. We have a tackle hut for overnight storage and also a bait fridge.
Extra facilities provided for the use of guests include a large, decked, above ground, solar heated swimming pool, surrounded by a huge paved terrace for sunbathing, brick built /BBQ and dining area also an undercover relaxation area with hot tub and comfortable settees and this is all surrounded by flower gardens and fruit trees and we have recently added a treehouse to the garden area. A large cut field just below the pool area, where you will find a swing, is designated for ball and racket games. A new all weather table tennis table, badminton and boule equipment are available for guest use.
We can also share our enthusiasm for target archery by providing lessons or taster sessions on our range.
The property has large private fenced grounds offering the chance to stroll through the meadow seeing lots of local flora and fauna and provides some great spots for bird-watching and picnics.
The 6.5 acre fishing lake has been here since pre-Napoleonic times and is set within our private grounds, surrounded by fields and woodland. It is naturally spring fed providing high quality oxygenated water.
A dam sits along the western end of the lake and here the depth reaches a maximum of 8m. At the east end there is an island with a stream which feeds into the lake. The north bank (farthest from the accommodation) is flat providing easy access to three swims with purpose built wooden platforms. On the south side the bank slopes quite sharply, here there is one swim on top of the bank close to the accommodation and another in a clearing toward the shallower end of the lake where, on summer days, fish bask protected by the exposed tree roots. You can also fish anywhere along the dam where the water is at it’s deepest.
You don’t have to be a fisherman to enjoy this picturesque lake, the setting is beautiful and provides a peaceful place to sit and for bird/nature watching and if you fancy a walk the 1km track leads all the way around the lake.

About Gill Knights
Having spent many years holidaying in France we finally made the long awaited permanent move in 2015. We both worked in offices in London for many years. However, for the last 10 years we lived and worked in Hertfordshire where we ran our own outdoor activity and events company called Top Events. This involved entertaining children, adults, corporate and family groups with a high ropes course, archery lessons and many other shooting & climbing activities. This has given us both good background experience in customer service.
Gill Knights purchased this Farmhouse in 2015
Why Gill Knights chose Vayres
The building is a typical stone house of the region with small windows offering great warmth and character. It has an amazing history having variously been the local landowner's country pile, a monastery and farm. Having been built to a very high standard, the accommodation has beautiful modern bathrooms, a charming living space and comfortable bedrooms all providing the ideal holiday home. Our gite sits in large peaceful gardens next to the lake which together with the surrounding countryside make this the perfect place to get away from it all. Despite our remoteness we are still close enough to the towns of Rochechouart and St Junien for local shopping and restaurants.
What makes this Farmhouse unique
The fishing lake is an added bonus which provides extra activity and a stunning outlook while attracting many different birds and wildlife. The surrounding space and open countryside provide a haven of great peace and tranquillity but within 5 minutes drive from the town of Rochechouart. The pool, hot tub and relaxation area in the garden make a welcoming focal point for our guests. As well as the room to stroll in our estate, the myriad of surrounding forest trails where you are unlikely to meet another person are on our doorstep.

Beautiful Setting for restful holiday
I had a wonderful and relaxing holiday, the gites was amazing, comfortable and relaxing.
Just waking up to the birds singing each morning, and the beautiful sunshine, relaxing by the pool, or being able to go for a lovely evening walk.
the couple that own the lovely place were around if you needed them, otherwise they just let you enjoy your holiday.
I will be booking my holiday for next year.
Gite in picturesque surroundings
We have stayed in this lovely gite twice since it was taken over by its present owners. It is very clean and spacious and very comfortable. The bedrooms are large and attractive rooms, The bathrooms/en-suite are well equipped. The living room is a large comfortable room with large fireplace and wood burner. There is a supply of DVD's for a relaxing evening watching TV. Outside there is area near the pool with BBQ where one can relax on the loungers or prepare and eat at the table provided. This area also houses the hot tub and table tennis.
A walk around the lake is a must and good fishing is there for those who wish to have a go.There are many walks around the ground where the serene and tranquil setting is much appreciated.
Rochechouart is just a few miles away where shops and cafes abound. There is a castle of museum well worth visiting.
Comfortable spacious gite in tranquil setting
We stayed as family group and found the gite spacious, very clean and comfortable. It is a beautifully restored building well-equipped with modern facilities and also has interesting features such as the large fireplace (not used in June!).
We particularly liked the bedroom with the Juliet balcony with its views of tress and the lake. The downstairs bedroom with its ensuite bathroom was ideal for my elderly parents.
Outside there is an excellent well-maintained pool, table tennis and also a barbecue area and outdoor eating area which was ideal on hot summer evenings.
The propery has large grounds where you can walk and my son enjoyed successful fishing in the lake.
We saw lots of wildlife including woodpeckers and a hoopoe. There are also walks direct from the gite into the surrounding countryside.
Nearby Rochechouart is an interesting market town with boulangeries and supermarkets. The castle is worth a visit and also the meteorite museum in the town.
The British owners were friendly and very helpful.
We are looking forward to returning next year.
The local town of Rochechouart has a chateau housing an art museum. The region is famous for a 6 billion tonne meteorite impact over 2 million years ago for which there is a local museum. As well as our private fishing lake there are many other leisure lakes and large rivers close by where you can hire pedalos, kayaks and other boats. The roads are very quiet in this area and perfect for cycling. The surrounding forest, which can be accessed directly from the house, has many trails and is free to roam. The local villages, of which there are many, offer historical churches to view and the quiet streets are filled with interesting shops offering Brocante and local arts & crafts items. The 'Maison de Porcelaine' in the nearby town of Aixe sur Vienne offers a factory tour and the ancient 'Chassenon Roman Baths' are just five minutes drive. We are 20 minutes from the martyrs village of Oradour sur Glane, a moving memorial to one of the worst atrocities of the 2nd world war. The large city of Limoges lies just 30 minutes away and offers many visitor attractions such as 'Parc Zoo du Reynou' the adventure 'Parc Bellevue' & 'L'Aquarium du Limousin' as well as a variety of shops and restaurants. 'Futuroscope' theme park in Poitiers is approximately an hour away.
