Most people never want to leave this river house,: In the morning, breathe the fresh country air on a walk to the local bakery and enjoy pastries made in the wood-fired oven along with a perfect cup of coffee (they roast it right there in the shop). Duncans Mills is ideally situated on the river, only 10 minutes from the resort town of Guerneville and in the other direction, ten minutes from the ocean beaches. It was named for the sawmills that once cut timber to build and re-build San Francisco after the 1906 Earthquake. It was the northern terminus of the Northwestern Pacific Railroad and the old Victorian station is still looking good as it approaches its 130th birthday. The turn of the century buildings have been lovingly cared for and provide a glimpse of small-town life 100 years ago. The town is well-known for its art galleries and restaurants.
If the urge to explore arises: you can hit the road and cruise along the river, past vineyards and through redwood forests. A few miles to the west are the ocean beaches and the rugged Sonoma Coast, to the east are the charming tasting rooms on the undiscovered Sonoma Wine Trail. You can pause in picturesque towns, and stroll through parks of giant redwoods that rival the worlds tallest trees. Dozens of food emporiums serve creative dishes with local produce and seafood. Unique shops feature handmade goods as well as coastal and redwood curios. Casa Lucia sleeps up to 6 adults, or up to 8 with children, between the two bedrooms and several open-up sofas in the sun room and the living room. There is a full bath with shower, a half bath, and an outdoor shower as well. The house is light and airy, with a generous dining area, living room and a spacious sunroom with river views from three walls of glass. Old fashion gas fireplaces will keep you cozy on a chilly night. The cheerful kitchen is fully equipped and includes stone countertops.

We live in the East Bay, but our family has enjoyed 'Russian River Life' for many, many years. We have taken our children to just about every beach, park and camping spot along the river. In 1989 we moved to Monte Rio where the kids went to elementary school. Alas, jobs and the city called us back, but our hearts were still with the River and we went back to visit frequently.
We bought our house on the river as a family project with 2 generations putting our savings together so we could have a place for the whole family to get together without the distractions of city life. We hope it can be that for your family as well.
A brief note of thanks and gratitute. We truly enjoyed our stay here. From early monring coffee and bird watching to wonderfully peaceful hours catching no fish what so-ever, every moment was fantastic! Thank you for your hospitality
Thank you Craig. Me and my husband spent 4 nights here. Lovely and peaceful home and grounds. Getting there was very scenic through other small towns. a lot of huge trees and green everywhere. Best to go in daytime first day. Beautiful flowers in front of home. River in back yard. Walked in and flowers everywhere. Nice touch. Just what you see in pictures. There was 2 bedrooms. We slept in the king bed and was not comfortable but the other Queen bed close to the front of house was better. Kitchen was beautiful. Well stocked with plates, bowls, cast iron pans, glasses, etc.. everything I needed to cook meals there. but bring your spices , condiments. There were a few there already. Jacuzzi was nice! We saw deer in the yard a few times while they grazed on the grass and a raccoon but left after we came out to greet it. LOL! Loved the swing. There was one TV but would of loved more cable channels since I forgot my favorite movies. Very clean and well maintained. Craig did call the second day to check on us so that was nice. There was a great bakery/coffee spot next to the post office over the bridge. The general store had everything and also loved the little shops about a quarter of a mile from house. Very friendly people. Went to Bodega bay about 20 min from there. Had a blast and then came home to get in Jacuzzi every night. Cant wait to come back. but this time I will take my kids. Thank you Craig for sharing your home with us.
So many things about this place we loved! Our list is......a cozy and inviting house with everything you need, watching the fog roll up the river, sitting in the hot tub at night staring at so many stars, beautiful Armstrong Woods, amazing bakery in Duncan Mills, canoeing on the river watching nature at it's best, the excellent wines at Moshin Vineyards. The owner Craig was a pleasure to work with! We would recommend this house to anyone, and would love to return.
Where do I begin? We stayed 6 nights in this quaint 2 bedroom with everything you need for a magnificent vacation. Fluffy, comfortable beds and pillows; sliding doors that you can open onto deck from master bedroom; living room with very comfortably sleeping sofa bed and rockers,; river room overlooking river and mountains with 2 more sofa beds; wonderful hot tub on deck overlooking large yard on river,; plenty of toys like kayaks, canoes and bicycles, grill; quaint little general store, restaurant and cafe within 2 miles; 15 minutes to beautiful views of the ocean; washer and dryer and gas heater to take the chill off at night; wonderful neighborhood where you can feel safe. The owners called to check on us as least twice during our stay to make sure we were doing OK and everything was going well for us. If you like to stay in an urban area with lots of activity this is NOT for you - only for people who love fresh air, the outdoors and friendly people. For us it was absolute heaven!
Only negative at all was one of sofa beds in river room was uncomfortable for sleeping so my son just switched to the one in the living room. It was comfortable as a couch though. We also arrived at night after dark and the road looks wooded and dark but rest assured its a lovely and safe area with plenty of nearby neighbors.
I have been reluctant to write this because we love this place so much & want to keep it secret, but the owners are so lovely I want to see them happy too!
The home itself is so very charming, filled with light, flowers and comfortable, good looking furnishings. The kitchen is well stocked for cooking & condiments and has beautiful tiles that invite you to cook and enjoy. The beds are comfortable & you can watch the stars from the slider in the master bed room on clear nights. The sun room is bright comfortable and sparkles with light, so delightful! You can moon bathe and star gaze from the hot tub in the deck, like we did every night!
We had the kayaks in the river every day and saw eagles, osprey and swallow fishing on the river. Every morning we went to the awesome coffee shop in nearby Duncan Mills for authentic Cuban coffee & of course we stocked up on Tea from Mr Trombly's tea shop. We adored the beaches near Jenner and got a daily cup of chowder from Cafe Aquatica
This hpuse, this location and these toys can't be beat, we will return! Thank you Craig & Paloma!
We loved every minute of our stay in this lovely, extremely comfortable, and very well-appointed home. The owners were great and the photographs of the pictures cannot do the breathtaking scenery justice. Our two kids loved playing in the giant meadow and we saw an osprey dive! We were impressed by the thoughtful details (fresh flowers in several rooms) and the well-stocked kitchen. Overall a sweet place to relax with friends or loved ones and a great home base for exploring redwood groves, the Sonoma Coast, and the many other attractions in the area. Highly recommend!
Whether you want to get away for time with your sweetie or family and friends, Casa Lucia is a perfect spot. The views and access to the river are amazing. The house is clean, well decorated, and comfortable. It feels like home. The deck is great for hanging out, eating and catching some sun. My favorite treat is to have coffee first thing in the morning in the hot tub and watch the fog lift of the river. Even the outdoor shower is hot enough to make this comfortable. This is a great rental for 1-2 families with kids. There is plenty of common space so everyone can sprawl and watch movies or play games. It is great to have bikes, kayaks, and such to use. During this trip we went canoeing and took a refreshing swim in the river. The kitchen is well prepared with everything you need to cook. If you hit the Friday farmer's market in Occidental on the drive in, you can enjoy fresh seasonal produce as well. And Duncans Mils offers outstanding coffee at the Bakery, grass fed beef at the General Store, and there is a lovely tea shop as well with a amazing selection of teas. This is truly a family favorite and spot to return to again and again. P.S. The owner is a dream to work with.
