Spacious 5 Bedroom, 4.5 Bath oceanbluff vacation home - great for families
Hale Makana is a spacious, ocean bluff home perched right above the Pacific at the end of a quiet cul-de-sac in the Princeville Resort on Kauai's famed North Shore. Close to award-winning golf courses, shops, restaurants beaches, and adventures, the home provides luxurious accommodations for families and groups of 10 maximum. A vacant lot to the right side, a large front lawn, and immaculate landscaping add to the spaciousness and privacy of this fabulous property.
Beautiful Hawaiian artwork adorns the walls, while the natural beauty provides ocean or mountain views from almost every room. The master bedroom looks out over the pool and jacuzzi to a spectacular ocean view with access to two lanais or decks. This is one of the premier, whale-watching locations on Kauai and seeing their spouts is an almost daily occurrence during winter months. Dolphins and turtles are also regular visitors to this coastline and even the rare, Hawaiian, monk seal has been spotted playing in the water below. Albatross nest annually and soar overhead in winter time. Shearwater's nest in the cliff and Brazilian cardinals look out for crumbs daily!
Photos cannot possibly do this property justice - it has to be seen to be believed! Repeat customers are our mainstay... why not become one of them!

What makes this House unique
The unbelievable sunsets into the ocean during the summer; watching the whales spout and breach many times during the winter months; hearing the eerie moaning of the shearwater's nesting in the cliffs; daily visits from our family of cardinals; soaring Laysan Albatross right across our lawn and often a breeding pair close by.... so many incredible adventures in nature. Our home is the perfect jumping off point for exploring Kauai. With the Princeville Center only moments away for groceries, restaurants and shops, and walk, jog or bike path around the Princeville Resort; great golf and tennis close by... it has everything we need.

Stunning views, fabulous property and home, a gem on Kauai!
The spacious home takes your breath away when you arrive, but that doesn't hold a candle next to the views from the pool area! The crashing waves on the rocks below, coupled with the opportunity to see whales and dolphins just right out in front of us was an experience not to be missed! Our whole family was very comfortable...plenty of room, spaces to escape to, room in the kitchen for all.... and did I mention the Tiki Bar...
Thanks for the great review and for the treats from your farm - I loved meeting you all and hope your memories last a lifetime! With much aloha,
Outstanding Property in Spectacular Location
Our stay at Hale Makana couldn't have been more pleasant. The house is large and fully equipped, with a pool, hot tub, bar, large-screen televisions, and sound systems. It's situated several hundred feet above the rock outcroppings of the Queen's bath, with a view of Bali Hai and overlooking a vast expanse of ocean. Frequently, we could see humpback whales breaching in the distance and sea turtles swimming below us. The manager of the property, Mary Paterson, is extremely pleasant and helpful.
During our stay, we especially enjoyed hiking on the Kalalau Trail along the Nā Pali coast, the Sleeping Giant, and Wailea Canyon, swimming at Anini Beach, tours of the Na 'Aina Kai botanical gardens and the Steelgrass chocolate farm, and a day at Māhāʻulepū Beach. Hanalei is a short drive away; Poke at the Dolphin Restaurant, shave ice at Wishing Well, and the Mai Tais at Tahiti Nui were excellent.
Thank you so much for your review David - and for all the valuable favorite things you did! We loved having you and your family - you treated the house with respect and care, and were a delight to communicate with, so you are always welcome back! There’s so much more to see and do - and people to meet! With fond aloha to you all.
Incredible house with amazing view!
We could not have asked for a more perfect property for our family vacation. We had 6 adults and 2 small children and had space to spare. Just walking through the gate on the first afternoon and seeing the view is something I'll always remember. The view of the Pacific from the pool area provides quite a backdrop for fun, photos, and relaxing. The house really is incredible. This is the first VRBO rental where we did not have to worry about the small things such as coffee filters, paper towels, condiments, etc., plus it was well stocked with games, puzzles and books. And Mary is such a pleasure to work with both in advance of our visit and during our stay. The views, the space, and the comfort make this property a must-see if you plan to visit Kauai.
Thank you so very much for the great review - I so enjoyed meeting your lovely family and those two cute little boys!! I am always thrilled when I see how much families enjoy their time at Hale Makana and am honored to be it's caretaker! The pictures can never do it justice, so the reviews really help let guests know it's a gem!! Enjoy the rest of your summer.
Great location. Great view. Plenty of room.
We stayed at Hale Makana with another family (total of 10 people) for 10 nights. The location is great. It is only about 5 minutes from the grocery store, gas, and a few restaurants--all in the same parking lot--in Princeville. It's also only about 10 minutes from Hanalei, which has plenty of restaurants, shops, churches, and activities (including kayaking, hiking, and the beach at Hanalei Bay). The view from the backyard is amazing--Mt. Makana, Queen's Bath, the endless Pacific Ocean, and sunsets. The trail to Queen's Bath is also very close (just a short walk) to this house. The house also had plenty of room for our group of 10 to hang out, visit, play games, and eat meals together.
Aloha and mahalo for your thoughtful review and comments on the things you particularly liked. I've listed them below since I believe they will help other potential guests.
1. Fresh fruit was great. The bananas were eaten quickly.
2. The addition of the ice machine helped a lot.
3. Trash pickup reminders were also a very good thing. We’ve missed trash pickup (or rushed out to the curb at 6:30 a.m.) many times in other places.
4. The DVD’s are a nice touch too. We watched a few of them.
5. The gas grill was also very good. It had a lighter and cleaning tools nearby and was clean. It was easy to start and use. That is less common at rentals than you might think, so I think prospective guests will like to know that.
6. The house has a perfect special arrangement such that it is open and free-flowing but divided enough to allow early risers to be up and about without waking anyone and for multiple small groups of people to be visiting, watching TV and playing games without interrupting each other.
7. The soap, shampoo and conditioner to get everyone through a shower or two until a grocery-store trip can be made was very convenient. Same goes for the hand soap and dish soap at the kitchen sink.
Interestingly, we took out the fan in the entertainment room in lieu of a light since it was so dark in there! Maybe a standing fan would be helpful in summer and a couple of bean bags? I hope you got to enjoy the many games from the chest, as well. Plus you got the lego chess board back together - impressive!!
The ceiling fan you had trouble with was replaced the day you left - I'm sorry we couldn't get it working.
Once again, my deepest gratitude for the feedback and so happy to hear you're considering a return trip... please let me know dates you are interested in as we are already getting inquiries for next year!
A hui hou
Hale Makana Memories
Our third trip to Hale Makana was just as special as the first. Vacationing on Kauai is a family tradition for us who range in age from 7 to 84 years. We love this location and its perfect ocean front setting. Every room in the house is comfortable and inviting. Mary was attentive in seeing we had everything we needed including a nonslip pad for my father's shower. We had beautiful weather and enjoyed grilling almost every night. The bar and front living room became our gathering spot each evening to reflect on another glorious day in paradise. Beds were comfortable and construction next door did not affect our privacy at all. Queens Bath was full of turtles each morning and a delightful hike without the parking hassle. The pool was fantastic day or night and lovely for star gazing. Day trips to Hanalei and our favorite snorkeling at Tunnels were easy and crowd free. We have so many wonderful memories and Hale Makana was the perfect start and end to each aloha day!
Mahalo for the lovely review and we were thrilled to have your two families back and to see the kids growing up! Such a delight and we hope you'll continue making Hale Makana a tradition!
And guess what? Crystal had found your lost sweatshirt and had forgotten to tell me, so I will send it back to you this week! Have a wonderful summer!
With much aloha,
Our week stay at "Hale Makana" was absolutely incredible! The house and grounds were wonderful! The pool and hot tub were just right in temperature, and we spent a lot of time in both. I can't say enough about the home and its cleanliness. We enjoyed every minute in it.
There was construction next door, but it didn't bother us at all. They were very quiet and respectful. We are early risers, so we were up and ready to meet the new day, before anyone even started working. The view of the ocean and sunset was soooo beautiful from the home! The only problem with our whole vacation was that it wasn't long enough. We want to stay a few days more, next time. Mary was a JOY to work with! She met us at the home and we each received a Lei from her. She even had a Beautiful Island Fruit Bowl for us to enjoy. (and we really did enjoy it.) Our whole experience couldn't have been more perfect. Thank You so Very Much!! Most Definitely want to come back again!!! Probably next year for our Grandsons Graduation Celebration! The Olson Family
Thank you so very much for this fabulous review! We are so happy to hear you had such a wonderful stay and would LOVE to welcome you back next year! We give a free additional night off for returning guests! It's really wonderful to get such positive feedback and really appreciate you taking the time to write this review - with deep gratitude and much aloha, Mary!
Kauai's stunning natural beauty is the backdrop for a huge variety of activities, hikes and viewpoints making it a photographic, golfing and naturalists' dream. The aloha spirit is alive and well here too...
