Awesome 5BR, Ocean Bluff Princeville Estate with Ocean Views

Bedrooms 5

Space 6,000 sq. ft.
Property type house
Minimum Stay 7 - 14 nights

About the property

Spacious 5 Bedroom, 4.5 Bath oceanbluff vacation home - great for families

Hale Makana is a spacious, ocean bluff home perched right above the Pacific at the end of a quiet cul-de-sac in the Princeville Resort on Kauai's famed North Shore. Close to award-winning golf courses, shops, restaurants beaches, and adventures, the home provides luxurious accommodations for families and groups of 10 maximum. A vacant lot to the right side, a large front lawn, and immaculate landscaping add to the spaciousness and privacy of this fabulous property. Construction is near completeion on the lot to the west, and for this reason, some of the photos show the construction fence. We have given special consideration for the potential inconvenience by reducing the rate over 30% through April, 2017, so this is your chance to come and stay for a lot less! As most guests are active exploring the island during the day, the construction should not be too intrusive. Guests have given 5 star ratings during the construction period too.

Beautiful Hawaiian artwork adorns the walls, while the natural beauty provides ocean or mountain views from almost every room. The master bedroom looks out over the pool and jacuzzi to a spectacular ocean view with access to two lanais or decks. This is one of the premier, whale-watching locations on Kauai and seeing their spouts is an almost daily occurrence during winter months. Dolphins and turtles are also regular visitors to this coastline and even the rare, Hawaiian, monk seal has been spotted playing in the water below. Albatross nest annually and soar overhead in winter time. Shearwater's nest in the cliff and Brazilian cardinals look out for crumbs daily!

Photos cannot possibly do this property justice - it has to be seen to be believed! Repeat customers are our mainstay... why not become one of them!

About Mary Paterson

My family visited Kauai many years ago and fell in love. Coming from Washington and Canada it was a beautiful place to thaw out, vacation and explore the culture and adventures Kauai has to offer. Since purchasing the property, we have made upgrades each year to keep the quality and comfort of the property.

Mary Paterson purchased this house in 2000

Why Mary Paterson chose Kauai

When we found this house on the bluff overlooking the ocean, we knew it would not only be a magical place for our family to stay, but it had already been a successful vacation rental. We have improved just about every aspect of the house and garden every year and know first hand what a joy it is to stay here. Many of our clients come back year after year, and we get to escape the cold and enjoy every winter together as a family. Our property manager offers the finest service of anyone we know, and she treats our guests to the same service - lei greeting and home orientation; fresh fruit basket and the fresh tropical flower arrangements throughout the house.

What makes this house unique

The unbelievable sunsets into the ocean during the summer; watching the whales spout and breach many times during the winter months; hearing the eerie moaning of the shearwater's nesting in the cliffs; daily visits from our family of cardinals; soaring Laysan Albatross right across our lawn and often a breeding pair close by.... so many incredible adventures in nature. Our home is the perfect jumping off point for exploring Kauai. With the Princeville Center only moments away for groceries, restaurants and shops, and walk, jog or bike path around the Princeville Resort; great golf and tennis close by... it has everything we need.

Guestbook comments from the manager

Hale Makana is located in a truly wonderful location, as good as any we have enjoyed in our travels. Bali Hi (forgive me for forgetting its proper name) is spectacular. Having only to turn our head in its direction to enjoy it was a special treat. I took hundreds of pictures of sunsets, morning light, afternoon waves, Queen's Bath--each a postcard and all from the property. Amazing.

The farmers market in Hanalei was definitely worth seeing. We were able to pick up lots of fresh ingredients for meals and to see foods and products that you can't find anywhere else.

Among our most memorable aspects of the trip were the surf lessons that each of us took through the instructors connected to the Quicksilver Surf shop. My wife, myself and my sons (ages seven and nine) made our first stand on the famed Hanalei Beach. The kids were very proud and did extremely well.

The property is extremely well maintained, impeccably clean and highly functional for a larger group. Having the pool to come home to and for the kids to enjoy, regardless of what the weather was doing, was hugely important.

Everything we could have wanted for the time in Kauai was found at the house, from every kitchen tool we might need to beach toys and chairs. We were struck by how well organized everything in the house was--every detail had been considered. Thanks Mary. I can tell that you put yourself into achieving the best possible care for this property and it's guests. We are grateful.

There's more that we would have liked to do, but a week can only fit so much into it. It broke our hearts to leave. We said goodbye at sunset down at the pier. Lots of locals were picknicking and taking in the spectacle of the see swallowing the sun. It was easily the most beautiful of the sunsets we saw and it honestly hurt to watch. We had to drive away.

average rating of 4.857143 based on 21 reviews

Great location. Great view. Plenty of room.

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at Hale Makana with another family (total of 10 people) for 10 nights. The location is great. It is only about 5 minutes from the grocery store, gas, and a few restaurants--all in the same parking lot--in Princeville. It's also only about 10 minutes from Hanalei, which has plenty of restaurants, shops, churches, and activities (including kayaking, hiking, and the beach at Hanalei Bay). The view from the backyard is amazing--Mt. Makana, Queen's Bath, the endless Pacific Ocean, and sunsets. The trail to Queen's Bath is also very close (just a short walk) to this house. The house also had plenty of room for our group of 10 to hang out, visit, play games, and eat meals together.

Owner's Response: Aloha and mahalo for your thoughtful review and comments on the things you particularly liked. I've listed them below since I believe they will help other potential guests. 1. Fresh fruit was great. The bananas were eaten quickly. 2. The addition of the ice machine helped a lot. 3. Trash pickup reminders were also a very good thing. We’ve missed trash pickup (or rushed out to the curb at 6:30 a.m.) many times in other places. 4. The DVD’s are a nice touch too. We watched a few of them. 5. The gas grill was also very good. It had a lighter and cleaning tools nearby and was clean. It was easy to start and use. That is less common at rentals than you might think, so I think prospective guests will like to know that. 6. The house has a perfect special arrangement such that it is open and free-flowing but divided enough to allow early risers to be up and about without waking anyone and for multiple small groups of people to be visiting, watching TV and playing games without interrupting each other. 7. The soap, shampoo and conditioner to get everyone through a shower or two until a grocery-store trip can be made was very convenient. Same goes for the hand soap and dish soap at the kitchen sink. Interestingly, we took out the fan in the entertainment room in lieu of a light since it was so dark in there! Maybe a standing fan would be helpful in summer and a couple of bean bags? I hope you got to enjoy the many games from the chest, as well. Plus you got the lego chess board back together - impressive!! The ceiling fan you had trouble with was replaced the day you left - I'm sorry we couldn't get it working. Once again, my deepest gratitude for the feedback and so happy to hear you're considering a return trip... please let me know dates you are interested in as we are already getting inquiries for next year! A hui hou Mary

Hale Makana Memories

  • 5 of 5

Our third trip to Hale Makana was just as special as the first. Vacationing on Kauai is a family tradition for us who range in age from 7 to 84 years. We love this location and its perfect ocean front setting. Every room in the house is comfortable and inviting. Mary was attentive in seeing we had everything we needed including a nonslip pad for my father's shower. We had beautiful weather and enjoyed grilling almost every night. The bar and front living room became our gathering spot each evening to reflect on another glorious day in paradise. Beds were comfortable and construction next door did not affect our privacy at all. Queens Bath was full of turtles each morning and a delightful hike without the parking hassle. The pool was fantastic day or night and lovely for star gazing. Day trips to Hanalei and our favorite snorkeling at Tunnels were easy and crowd free. We have so many wonderful memories and Hale Makana was the perfect start and end to each aloha day!

Our week stay at "Hale Makana" was absolutely incredible! The house and grounds were wonderful! The pool and hot tub were just right in temperature, and we spent a lot of time in both. I can't say enough about the home and its cleanliness. We enjoyed every minute in it.

There was construction next door, but it didn't bother us at all. They were very quiet and respectful. We are early risers, so we were up and ready to meet the new day, before anyone even started working. The view of the ocean and sunset was soooo beautiful from the home! The only problem with our whole vacation was that it wasn't long enough. We want to stay a few days more, next time. Mary was a JOY to work with! She met us at the home and we each received a Lei from her. She even had a Beautiful Island Fruit Bowl for us to enjoy. (and we really did enjoy it.) Our whole experience couldn't have been more perfect. Thank You so Very Much!! Most Definitely want to come back again!!! Probably next year for our Grandsons Graduation Celebration! Magnificent Seven

  • 5 of 5

I am posting this review very late only because I am looking to come to Kauai with my family again and in researching homes, came across this listing. We had stayed here a year ago through House Of Dreams Kauai Rentals and probably should have posted this review back then. This was our second rental through this company. The service was splendid and Kimmy was very helpful with some tips about the immediate area. Those included a secret pathway down to Hideaways Beach, Napali Sail & a shortcut to Queens Bath, both of which you can walk to rather quickly. It was Summer and Queens Bath was lovely and calm. The home itself is much grander than it looks in the photos. The views from the Master Suite are unparalleled. Glenn recommended this accommodation over another we were considering that was twice the price. We are very grateful for this advice. The home had everything we needed for a family holiday. We found the kitchen to be perfect, clean, extremely well stocked and filled with charm. I do not feel it needs a renovation at all. It is more of a spacious country kitchen and matches the humble elegance of the home. It opens to the great room so that chefs can be part of the fun, while preparing a meal. The views of Bali Hai and the ocean were captivating and sunset became the anticipated event of the day. There was an empty lot to the left of the house and a few locals would gather there around 6:00PM for sunset each evening. This too we found to be charming and enjoyed talking story with folks that were all too happy to make suggestions and share little secrets about the island. We met some wonderful people and truly embraced this experience. Mary, the properties caretaker was beyond super sweet, insightful and a wealth of Aloha Spirit. It was a magnificent 7 days on Kauai and I only wish it were longer. If this home is within your budget, do not pass up the opportunity. It TRULY is that SPECIAL!!! Thank you Glenn, Kimmy and Mary for a lovely holiday on Kauai. I do apologize for taking so long to post this very well deserved Mahalo to you.

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for taking the time to write a review - it's never too late to hear from guests that they enjoyed their stay at Hale Makana and we are grateful for the feedback. I love working with Glenn & Kimmy so glad to hear you do too! I appreciate your comments very much, and though we are losing some of our Bali Hai views due to the house being built on that vacant lot, it's still got wonderful views of the ocean, Queen's bath below, winter whales breaching and the summer sunsets! The owner will also love hearing that you loved the quaint, and well stocked kitchen!! With much aloha, Mary

This house is absolutely fantastic. The views are the best. The house comes completely stocked as everything you need is supplied. There's beach chairs, masks, snorkels, fins, beach towels etc. The pool and spa are great and there is plenty of lounge chairs and towels for that too. The house was plenty big for us as we had daughters, son-in-law, grandchildren and a friend with us. Everything you need for meal preparetion can be found in the kitchen. Anini Beach is a short drive away and even when the ocean is ROUGH it stays calm enough to snorkel. The Dolphin or The Bistro are both vey good restaurants and just a short drive away. Mary is very congenial and very likable she will put you at ease instantly. She was so thorough showing us the house the first day we never had to bother her again. This is the perfect spot and I would recommend Hale Makana to anyone. I'm sure our family will make it back.

Nice house but cheap owner!

  • 3 of 5

The house was comfortable clean albeit dated. Price you pay for beautiful views though. The location was great overlooking Queen's Bath. There is the challenge of having lots of locals/tourists wandering nearby and at one point we came back and there were kids on the empty lot next door soaking wet. We suspect they were in the pool and jumped out when we arrived--this made us a little nervous about security. The kitchen is small a very, very dated. We knew this was the draw back and in fact it was.

The only really issue I had was the owner/rental agent. I have rented 25+ houses/villas the last 10 years and have never been charged a dime of our security deposit. There were beach towels apparently missing--although we can't confirm that--and we were charged $160 dollars for 5 towels. I make too much and am too busy to fight that but I found it ridiculous. Included was a $35 dollar charge to drive to Lihue to buy the towels. Ever heard of Target? Amazon? Even to Kauai the shipping charge is not $35. How do I know? I checked!

Would I recommend this house to a friend? No..there are plenty of nice houses on the island and it simply wasn't worth the cheap response from the owner/renter.

Owner's Response: As there is no guest name or date with this review, I have to assume it was from the group that stayed in July, as no other guests have been charged for missing towels this year. I did want to clarify that the fees were for 5 beach towels and 4 umbrellas which were missing, not just beach towels and no fee for shopping was included. I wanted to match the existing beach towels which is why I went back to Costco. Both umbrella’s and towels came to a total of $140, not $160 as mentioned in the review. The vacant lot next door does get used by local folks at sunset time since it’s a premium view and there’s nothing I can do about this as the owners allow it. I hadn’t heard that you thought the kids had been in the pool before and that does concern me, naturally. As for the outdate kitchen - we had hoped to renovate last December, but the roof needed replacing and this was a more pressing and costly project for the owners. It's still on the plan for this Christmas! Thank you for bringing these thoughts to my attention - I'm always trying to improve our services and facilities - and you'll see that the majority of our reviews are very favorable! Please contact me directly if you wish to discuss anything further. Mahalo and aloha, Mary
