About Jo Pullen

We have lived and worked in the area for the last 10 years and love the variety of outdoor activities in south devon. We have 2 young children who love living near the sea. We spend a lot of our spare time cycling, kayaking and walking.

We fell in love with Shaldon when we first moved down and bought April cottage summer 2015, hoping to use it as a holiday home for our family for part of the year. We have renovated it ourselves and have loved making it a bright and relaxing place to stay near the sea.

Jo Pullen purchased this house in 2015

Very cute cottage in superb quaint location

  • 4 of 5

Had a lovely new year break in Shaldon. The directions to the cottage were spot on and the wine left for our arrival was a nice touch & much needed after a foggy drive down ! Cottage very clean and was just about big enough for the 4 of us for 3 nights. would be nice to have a bit more comfy seating though. We loved Shaldon and ate out most the time. Nice that the boat to Teignmouth runs all year. Would be nice to visit in the Summer months to do more walking and beach exploring. Also, could use trains and buses a bit more rather than struggling to park in the tight roads every time we went out. All in all cottage was good value in a lovely location. Very swift communication throughout from booking onwards. Thank you for letting us stay.

Winter in April cottage

  • 5 of 5

Enjoyed a very snug week in April cottage in the coldest week of the year. It's a charmingly quirky little home in the heart of Shaldon, which in itself is pretty special. The cottage is clean, well equipped and very cosy.

The ferry to Teignmouth amazingly runs throughout the winter and for those happy to use the bus the number 22 goes from Shaldon Bridge to Dawlish Warren where the nature reserve is great in winter.

Still have lots on the 'to do' list on next visit

Happy days in April Cottage

  • 5 of 5

A pleasant little welcoming cottage in a great location. April Cottage is well maintained, cosy living space with a great little kitichen. The cottage is located in Shaldon, a lovely village full of character with its sandy beach, lovely walks and good pubs/restaraunts serving excellent food.

Not very comfortable

  • 3 of 5

Although very clean the property was very cramped. The bed rammed against the wall and no room for anything else. Downstairs we had a two seater sofa and two canvas camping chairs. This may be ok for the young but not all of us are. The village was a delight and not far to drive to other resorts. Good food at pubs and cafe and very lucky with the sunny weather. Im sorry but we could not recommend it and left early.

Owner's Response: I'm really sorry you didn't enjoy your stay and value your feedback. April cottage is an old fisherman's cottage and they are all on the smaller side, we prefer to think 'cosy'! We have reflected this in the price which is always very reasonable. We love the quirkiness of the cottage and have tried hard to maximise the space and provide holidaymakers with all they need for a break in Shaldon. The lounge has a lovely 2-seater sofa that will sit 2 adults and our wiggling 3 year old quite happily. Like the beach huts on Riverside we have also provided 2 comfortable directors chairs too, along with a small foldable dining table and chairs that can go up in the lounge if the weather isn't great, or you don't want to go to one of the many brilliant restaurants/cafes near the cottage. Upstairs the double bed is up against the wall due to the space restriction in such an old building, but this has enabled us to provide guests with a brand new ensuite shower room for the main bedroom. Glad you had good weather and hope you come back to enjoy Shaldon in the future as it has so much to offer.

Neat cottage in a great location

  • 3 of 5

As a couple, we found the cottage charming and clean. Living-room spacious/comfy. Good terrace, nicely flowered. But such a tight fit in kitchen and upstairs (and we're both slim); small double bed against the wall (no room for a bigger one).

Nice outlook, super quiet and very well placed for beach, ferry, shops and eating out. Shaldon was perfect for our short holiday.

Owner's Response: Glad you had a lovely holiday, thanks for your review and feedback, much appreciated. We love April cottage and it's quirkiness! All the old fisherman's cottages in Shaldon are on the small side but we have tried really hard to use the space wisely, and fit in everything you need for a great stay.

Shaldon is a quiet seaside village on the mouth of the river Teign in south devon, opposite Teignmouth. It has a number of excellent restaurants, cafés, and coffee shops, some directly on the beach front with fantastic views. There are several pubs within easy walking distance and easy access to the south west coast path to the north, Exeter and south to Torquay. Our cottage is also on the Templar way.

The village boasts a GP’s surgery, post office, small independent shops including an award winning butchers, an artisan bakery, fish and chip shop, grocers and pharmacy. The many attractions include Ness beach which is accessed by a smugglers tunnel, Shaldon Zoo (takes tesco vouchers!), water sports, sailing, rowing, coastal walks, pitch and putt course and the Botanical gardens provide beautiful views across the Teign Estuary and Lyme Bay. The Shaldon Regatta is held annually in August, being one of the oldest in England.

Shaldon is served by regular bus and taxi services and Teignmouth train station connects to London Paddington. A small open passenger ferry operates a frequent service from the beach and transports passengers the short distance across the estuary to Teignmouth.
