About Helen Murtha

I am a New Yorker whose Mother grew up on this land which was part of a large farm, grazing cattle and fields of sheep on the mountain. I came over in 1958 for my first visit when the family home was still in pre-modern fashion. No electricity, no running water just joy and food around the fireplace and water from the well for the cooking and from the stream for the washing up.

I fell in love with it all and was able to build this modern cottage on an acre of land given to me, where the view of the Bay and Mountains is quite special.

Guestbook comments from the manager

Your cottage was "just like home". All of us felt that the layout and spacious rooms made our stay relaxing and comfy. The furnishings and appliances were just right for a one-week stay for four peoples _ and of course, the view was great. Besides exploring Kenmare we toured all three peninsulas (Beara, Kerry, and Dingle) - our favorite was Beara. We would readily recommend your place to anyone who might be interested in staying in Southwest Ireland. If there is a place to put renter comments on your website, please let us know, We had a great time in Ireland.

Convenient and comfortable

  • 5 of 5

Perfectly located 5 minutes from Kenmare with easy reach to Sheep's Head, Beara and Dingle Peninsulas. Wonderful view from the kitchen window and the master bedroom over the bay. Two deer visited the yard one morning.

Beds are comfortable and the place is beautifully equipped. It was an excellent place to stay for a week.

Wonderful, well equipped, and great location

  • 5 of 5

This cottage is well equipped and truly a home away from home. The two bedrooms are spacious with a full bath upstairs and a wonderful shower in the full bath downstairs. The kitchen has everything you need to prepare meals with an attached dining room and nice deck outside overlooking the bay. We appreciated the quite location about two miles out of Kenmare. Kenmare is a nice sized community with lots of music in the variety of pubs. We really enjoyed the Beara Peninsula and in particular Healy pass. Also another highlight was the Seafari boat tour of the harbor and bay. The Skelling Island Visitor Center is worth checking out. The owner of this property is a little difficult to reach. Don't let this put you off. This property is worth the effort.

Everything you need in the perfect location!

  • 4 of 5

The beginning of our stay was a little bit of a rough start. We were the first guests of the season and the house was a little finicky from being buttoned up for a few months prior to our stay. The heating wasn't working properly and the electricity would flicker and shut off on occasion. With a quick response from the person who oversees the rental, the issues were addressed and the remainder of our stay was nothing short of perfect! The location of the house is wonderfully situated along both the Ring of Kerry and the Ring of Beara, perfect for exploring County Kerry's finest attractions! It was extremely peaceful with very little interference from surrounding noise. The house was more well stocked than a resort, with plenty of linens, towels, and kitchen utensils. There was nothing we needed that wasn't supplied! There was even a fresh supply of milk, butter, and bread for our stay. Despite the minor issues we had at the beginning of our stay, and some haze caused by controlled burns in the area (March), we wholeheartedly recommend this house to couples or families wanting to explore the best of County Kerry! The views over the bay were spectacular. We saw deer, rabbits, and plenty of birds just off the back porch and even had a few amazing sunsets during our stay. My only complaint about the house is the one shower in the downstairs bathroom. (There is only a bathtub in the upstairs bathroom.) The shower downstairs was very small with a difficult, hard to adjust, and low-pressure nozzle. The WiFi wasn't amazing, though it did work (slowly) most of the time. The bed in the master bedroom was comfortable (we didn't even use the second bedroom). There was plenty of storage space for personal belongings. It had all of the luxuries one would need (dishwasher, washer, dryer, fireplace, etc.) It truly started to feel like home after just a few days.

Nice place to enjoy Ireland

  • 5 of 5

A very quiet and confortable cottage with a wonderful view on Kenmare bay. When you're having breakfast, you can see rabbits, cows, birds and even little deers in the garden. It's an immersion in the nature although the cottage is not isolated because there are kind neighbours (who make delicious ice creams) and it's near the nice village of Kenmare. The location is perfect to discover the National park of Kilarney and the Ring of Kerry, however you need to have a car to do it.

OK but don't forget anything

  • 3 of 5

The house was fine (except for a strange water heating system), the view was great--but don't forget anything there, as the owner will ignore requests to return the items.

Owner's Response: Dear John, I am sorry for your missing sweater but my caretakers Eva and Vance have searched the house twice and there was no sweater left there. If you let us know about places you visited in town, we could check with them to see if a sweater was found. In my experience, people have been very responsive and helpful. Take care, Owner Helen M.

Beautiful and well equipped

  • 5 of 5

Quietly situated only a few minutes by car from Kenmare with all its restaurants and shopping mall Tuatha Murtagh is a perfect place for discovering Beara peninsula and beyond. Fully equipped, WiFi is not the fastest but very reliable, spaceous rooms, livingroom with working fireplace, beautiful view over Kenmare river bay, with comfortable beds upstairs, two bathrooms, gas central heating, gas cooking making it a place for a longer stay even through colder months. Car is a must, bicycles could be useful as well.

Family favorites - Our daily walk along the "New Lane" , about 1/2 hour to start the day, wave to neighbors and few cars. Up close and personal with the cows, goats and horses along the way. The views of the Bay and the mountains on both sides gives you an incentives to explore. The Seal-watching Cruise from the pier and the live theater at Carnegie Arts Center in town are must do's. Gleninchaquin Park on R571 west about 7 miles is best for breathtaking landscapes and scenery on a charming hike up the river walk as the river rushes by your path. Kenmare Stone Circle, the largest in SW Ireland, Molls Gap and the lakes beyond on the mountain road to Killarney are all worth a visit.

You need at least 7 days visit to savor all the special places.
