Pahoa House Rental Photos and Description

House, 1 TO 3 Bedrooms, 3 Baths, (Sleeps 1 TO 6)

Honu Kai which means 'Sea Turtle ' in the Hawaiian language is a beautifully refurbished Hawaiian beach house great for friends and families with all the amenities you could wish for on your vacation. The 3 bedroom and 3 bath house has 2 bathrooms on the upper bedroom level and a separate bathroom on the lower carport area for showering and toilet after your swim. The house has a great Hawaiian feel and is maintained beautifully by the owners and efficient house keeping staff.

If you need more sleeping accommodations or desire more room and water practically under your feet then Hula Cove, our guest studio with a king sized bed located across the street and directly on the tidepools may be rented separately or in conjunction with Honu Kai.

The snorkeling entrance to the largest of the tidepools is across the narrow street a mere 25 steps from the front of the house. You can sit on the private front deck of the house gazing at the water and enjoy fresh papaya picked from the nearby papaya plantations. Don't worry about curious passerbys as the large Areca and hibiscus hedge shields the house from the afternoon noise and business of the tidepool sunbathers and swimmers.

Maybe you would like to take a bike ride thru the community or relax on the back patio getting a tan or quietly meditating while emjoying the orchids and coconut palms.

When it's time to turn in enjoy the sounds of the waves crashing on the reef in the distance or maybe the rain pounding on the house's tin roof. In this part of the world there is only the sounds of nature at night.

About Mike

I live in Los Angeles, Ca.where I own my own company since 2003. I discovered the Kapoho tide pools while exploring the Islands in the 80s and fell in love with the snorkeling and the laid back attitude of the area. I was captain of my university's swim team and here was a place for safe swimming and snorkeling inside a protected reef. I never tire of returning to the area for some RandR and truthfully a little zen experience.

Mike purchased this house in 2006

Why Mike chose Puna District

Honu Kai is so well situated near the water. It is private with a wonderful Hawaiian feeling. There is no "You could be anywhere" feeling here. You know you are in Hawaii with a bit of a nostalgia feeling .

Relaxing Rainforest Tide Pool Home!

  • 5 of 5

My family stayed at 'Honu Kai' in August 2016. The property owner, Mike, was well beyond responsive to both our needs, comfort, and experience! It was a snap to book his place on HomeAway/VRBO. He was extremely helpful and super quick getting payment and arrival docs send to us. Mike even arranged for a baby stroller to be available for our stay at Honu Kai. Well beyond what many luxury hotels will do for guests! Thank you so much!

The house was well-stocked with everything essential you'll need to cook and relax! There were plenty of supplies like dishwasher detergent, paper towels -- even laundry soap! We like the extra small touches like a waterproof sleeve for your cellphone! My wife and I were enjoying a belated anniversary celebration (this trip) and found a nice card and gift waiting for us upon arrival. Again, this is luxury hotel level customer service.

Our family thoroughly enjoyed snorkeling at the tide pools across the road! Plenty of nice equipment -- including a bicycle -- stored inside for guests to freely use. Some owners charge for use of snorkeling gear, etc.! Mike allowed full use of everything! Hospitality at its finest.

When we had a minor issue or routine question during our stay, Mike was emailed. We could've called him too, but *nothing* I had was urgent at all. He responded back faster than my smartphone's data refresh rate! Within a minute or two. Where's the best pizza around here?? Mike also provided detailed sightseeing and food recommendations daily! Thanks for the Ken's in Hilo referral! I'm still stuffed from the Sumo pancake stack, ha-ha! Again, something you'd get from luxury hotels. We saw the lava flow a very short drive away.

Honu Kai was very clean and comfortable. Lots of room, windows, and airflow! We loved the chirping frogs at night and sometimes we'd get a very harmless Gecko inside the house. Kids loved 'em! Plenty of safe parking under house at front. Easy for a minivan full of kids, ha!

Would I stay here again? Ah... Yes, without a doubt! This owner truly values and treasures visitors staying at his property. Overall excellent experience at Honu Kai.

Hutchinson Family Hawaii vacation 2016

  • 5 of 5

The property, house and amenities are simply terrific. The location right beside the tide pools, while a terrific asset, became quite literally a threat during the hurricane... though the kids loved every minute of the excitement! Even before we were forced to evacuate, the owner contacted us along with his property custodian and went above and beyond what one would reasonably expect for a rental unit - generally the expectation is to deal with the corporation. This proved invaluable and helped us immeasurably during the, not one, but two hurricane events. We Hutchinsons are a hardy adventurous lot and just rolled with it and made a wild weather event and flooded out home an unforgettable experience. Thanks to Mike the owner for all his help - before, during and after :)

The house is lovely, filled not only with the basics, but many extras. Tide pools are simply fantastic - our two week stay on both Kauai and the Big Island revolved a great deal around snorkeling so this was a bonus. Our other big adventure was cycling down to where the molten lava spilling into the sea just around the corner. Incredible to see Kilauea gurgling just after we arrive home.

Cheers and thanks

Owner's Response: Such a nice and "hardy" family. Our first concern for guests is always their safety. When two hurricanes back to back targeted the Big Island we alerted our guests to stay tuned to the weather station. Fortunately our tidal surge was limited to the driveway and downstairs storage room. Exciting? Maybe, but as a former Floridian I know the power of the ocean. I hope the Hutchinsons will come back again during a normal sunny period. Much aloha, Mike

beautiful vacation place

  • 5 of 5

This was a wonderful vacation and our first staying at Honu Kai although we have stayed in other properties in Kapoho. The house was very well maintained with lovely grounds and a five minute walk to the tide pools where we swam and snorkeled every day. The setting is peaceful and serene and a close drive to Pahoa for supplies or a nice dinner out. We loved driving the Red road to the hot ponds----also very close and had a great massage at Kalani health resort. Thank you Honu Kai, we will miss you!

Owner's Response: Mahalo Jan for your lovely review of Honu Kai. We are so happy that you "explored " the area and saw the Red Road and enjoyed the hot ponds. The Kapoho tide pools are the main attraction, but as you mentioned not the only one in the area. Hopefully we will see you and your family again. Aloha, Mike M

The house met all of our needs and supplied the location that was perfect for our vacation

  • 5 of 5

The location was amazing for snorkeling and a natural exposure to the big island. The owner was fantastic when we had the increased excitement of a tropical storm heading at us! We will dream of returning!

Owner's Response: Loree and her family were fantastic guests! Our #1 concern for our guests is their safety and then enjoyment during their stay. Hawaii is in the cyclone zone from June thru November and although rare we watch the skies for any tropical depressions. In 9 years we have only had one hurricane come thru, but like any beach front locations we are susceptible to high tides.
