Formerly a fisherman's pub, this is the last cottage in a row of cute fisherman cottages, right on Kingsdown beach. The house is a bright and light space, that plays to its nautical location in terms of style. It has a strong personality with large metal windows, bold colours and wood panelling throughout. We love the cozy but open plan design on the ground floor and the serene sunroom upstairs, with sea views, along with the vintage touches and nautical pictures.
The space is ideal for a family with a spacious kitchen and dining room that seats 8 comfortably. The kids bunk room, with plenty of space for an additional travel cot as well as lots of toys, is conveniently located on the ground floor, while the master bedroom upstairs is a peaceful sanctuary with the adjoining sun-room. There is also a single room, ideal for a nanny or in-law. The top floor is an ideal room for a whole family with a double and 2 singles.
The house is right on the beach so couldn't be more ideal for kids to spend all day playing, while you relax for a long bbq lunch in the front garden. There are plenty of toys, books and a craft cupboard for a rainy day. For older children the house is close to golf, tennis, riding and sailing clubs. The sitting room is a cosy nook in which to enjoy a family DVD in front of a wood-burning stove after sunset.
About the Location:
The cottage is in Kingsdown, near Deal, an hour and half’s drive from East London, or 2 hours from central London. It is accessible by high speed train (1 hour 10 minutes from St Pancras or Stratford), and is a 5-minute taxi ride from Walmer Station.
The cottage is next to a pub which serves great food, with 2 other pubs within walking distance. The hosts have a number of bikes including 1 with a child back seat, and the beach promenade is ideal for cycling to the nearby town of Deal.
This cottage has 4 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. The ground floor has a large open-plan kitchen, dining room, and sitting room with wood-burning stove. There is also a shower room and bunk bed room. Doors that open out to the front garden that leads straight to the beach. Upstairs is the master bedroom and single room plus a sunroom with sea views. A double and 2 single beds are found in the attic. There is an outdoor sauna in the back garden.
The owners have no pets but are happy to accept well behaved ones as guests.
There are no stair gates, but you can easily close off the stairs with doors, both upstairs and downstairs.
There is a sauna, which guests are welcome to use, but at their own risk - it is small (no more than 3-4 people) and the stove is open.
A car is not essential: the property is walking distance from the village with a post office, butcher and general store. Note that the beach is a pebbly beach, and there are few items for babies.
My wife is a magazine journalist and editor who gets her kicks from uncovering the best the city has to offer. I've been working in finance and now setting up my own business.
Christopher Hicks purchased this cottage in 2011
Having grown up in the countryside I kind of have a longing for a quieter life and love the feeling of space and tranquility The Victory offers. Together with my wife we live a life that tries to take in the best of both worlds and are bringing up our children (aged 5 and 3, with one on the way) to appreciate the vibrancy of London life while being able to entertain themselves all day on the beaches of the East Kent coast. We're both keen travellers and believe that with a bit of thought, preparation and the right attitude, children should encourage, rather than stop you from doing anything or going anywhere you want to go.
Its a truly special location with amazing light and all times of year. It can feel a million miles from London yet its just over an hour on the train. It therefore is great for weekend breaks in the winter and has plenty to offer both on your doorstep and in the area for a week or more in the summer.
I booked the house as a base near Dover to support my eldest daughter and her team "the Neville's Cross Battlers" in their successful relay team channel crossing. My husband and I came up from Cornwall, one of our daughters, her husband and two children came from Durham, two of the team who stayed with us for the relay on Sunday also came from Durham and our youngest daughter came from London. So there was quite a crown of us but the facilities in the house were excellent, we were delighted to find a washing machine and dishwasher hidden in cupboards. There were lots of toys for the children and lots of towels even some for the beach and plenty of bedding etc.
Thanks to prompt help from Gemma any problems were quickly solved.
We loved the closeness of the beach and there were many excellent walks including a lovely one into Deal.
I would definitely recommend the pub next door who admirable coped with 11 of us for a meal.
An excellent holiday home.
The house is perfectly situated right on the beach with a pub a couple of doors away. It had everything you would need and was tastefully decorated. Instructions were clear and Chris responded promptly to my questions. Had an amazing weekend with friends and would highly recommend this property for friends and families.
