We welcome you to Hacienda San Fernando. Our sprawling property is uniquely situated and consumes a large hill overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Hacienda San Fernando is made up of sixty-five beautiful acres of both cleared fields and jungle areas. There are several fun hiking trails which run through the property. Numerous fruit trees including oranges, lemons, pineapples, bananas, papayas and avocados can be found on the property and available to renters. Our gated driveway is nearly one-half mile long.
There are four homes on the property which all overlook the ocean. The three bedroom, two bathroom main house is situated at the very top of the property. In the main house, all of the bedrooms, the living room, the dining room and the kitchen face the Pacific Ocean. The large living room has six french doors which open up on to the pool patio which leads to the deep-water kidney-shaped pool.
One of the guesthouses has two bedrooms and one bathroom. The other guesthouse has two bedrooms, two bathrooms, a kitchen and large outdoor deck. The main house and both guesthouses are all air conditioned. The fourth house is used by our caretaker and his wife.
The sunset views over the Pacific from the veranda are truly breathtaking. Playa Samara, Playa Buena Vista and Playa Barrigona can all be seen from the property. The sense of quiet and peace on the property is very calming. Sunsets may also be enjoyed from the pool or from the twelve person jacuzzi which overlooks the ocean.
The property is a nature lover's paradise. Expect daily visits from monkeys, parakeets, iguanas, armadillos and toucans. Feel free to explore the vast property on nature trails that run throughout the hacienda. Exotic flowers and plants along with native animal life are everywhere.
Our caretaker, Freddy, and his wife, Luisa, live in a home on the property (far away from the main house) and are very helpful. They can assist in navigating around the property and Samara. Daily laundry service and maintenance of the home is included. A chef is also available for hire at an additional cost.
Samara is a charming village with natural beauty. The town of Samara and its surrounding area offer a large variety of plants and the shelter of a coral reef offshore. The area is an excellent vacation spot with ocean and river kayaking, scuba diving, snorkeling, horseback riding, boat tours, fishing, canopy tours and ultralight flights all within minutes of the property. The local restaurants are excellent and serve a range of cuisines including native Costa Rican foods, fish, Italian, barbeque and more.
We happen to own some property right on the beach in Samara and renters of Hacienda San Fernando are welcome to use our chaise lounges which we keep on the beach. We allow Tico Surf School to use our beach property and can arrange discounted surf lessons for our renters.

My wife and I visited Samara, Costa Rica during our honeymoon in 1996. We met a local Samara resident who explained that his family was selling some undeveloped property. Just before sunset one evening we climbed to the top of the property for sale and watched a beautiful sunset over the ocean. Later that evening we negotiated the purchase of the property while eating fresh ceviche.
After returning to the U.S. we retained an attorney from San Jose who was recommended by the U. S. Embassy and soon closed on the property. After hiring an architect and sending plans back and forth between the U.S. and Costa Rica we figured out a design for the main house. Nine months later the main house and pool were constructed.
Over the years since the initial construction we have purchased additional surrounding property and now have over sixty-five acres. In addition to the main house, the property now consists of two guesthouses, a caretaker's home and a detached garage. There is also a large, thatched-roof playhouse for children.
Our children have thoroughly enjoyed all that our home and Samara has to offer. They have become accomplished surfers and we have all become tropical nature enthusiasts.
My husband, myself and two of our friends stayed here for a week at the end of March This is a nice place! There are no neighbours, the pool was beautiful and Freddy took great care of it. The other reviews basically say it. We enjoyed being out of town but if you are looking to party every night somewhere a little closer to town might be better or just have a designated driver. We did have Howler monkeys come up fairly close to the house...so cool. Freddy and Louisa are very friendly...although they don't speak English Freddy tried his best to communicate with us. I would recommend this place to anyone.
My family and I thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Hacienda San Fernando. The main house could not have been more beautiful. From the artwork, to the views to the comfortable furniture - everything was truly amazing. The two guesthouses were also very comfortable. The surrounding beaches were easy to find and really nice. We especially enjoyed Playa Carrillo. There are plenty of activities to do within minutes of Hacienda San Fernando including surfing, fishing, horseback riding, ziplining and more. We were very sorry to leave beautiful Hacienda San Fernando and will surely be returning.
The property is exactly as it is pictured, the one exception is the exquisite view of the ocean that cannot be captured in a photo. Our family of ten included three young children; we all felt comfortable and at home in this beautiful property.
Groundskeeper Freddy, his wife Louis and son Ivan could not have been more kind and hospitable. Freddy always greeted us with a smile and was so generous with his time as he taught our children some words in Spanish. This trio contributed significantly to our overall spectacular experience.
Part of everyday was spent at one of four local, serene beaches; afternoons were spent cooling off in the shade of the superbly landscaped pool area. Samara offered many adventures (kayaking, surfing, snorkeling), solid restaurants to get lunch or dinner and a two supermarkets. We enjoyed preparing dinner in the kitchen most evenings (all ten of us comfortably sat at the table). A door between the bedroom area and the common space allowed us continue to enjoy the house after the children were asleep. The bed in the master of the main house was exceptionally comfortable and the shower had the same spectacular view of the ocean.
We cannot wait to return!
The other reviews pretty much sum it up but this is a stunningly beautiful property and a nice place for a relaxing retreat and we highly recommend it. The defining feature is definitely being on top of the mountain and the views (and drive) to get there. The way the kitchen, dining area and living room all open onto the pool deck and the beautiful landscaping and expansive views made each evening's sunset a truly special event.
Overall it's a spectacular place and great for a group or medium size family. It's not a 5 star resort with all that entails but it's also not priced like one either. Freddy and Louisa were great and their son even played with the kids and taught them some Spanish.
Besides the house itself it's worth noting that we visited the 4 local beaches and they are absolutely amazing. A schedule of days at the beach and evenings at the house made for an exceptional get-away for us.
- We were a party of 10 and it worked out well for us. We had one family of 5, a couple and a couple with one teenager so we fit the profile well with the main house and two guesthouses. Depending on your group one note is that there is a difference in quality of acomodations between the main house and the other guesthouses. If you're trying to travel as a group and give everyone a "fair" experience there is one guest house that is amazing but the other one doesn't have the views, is only a twin sized bed and doesn't seem to have hot water for the showers.
- Samara is a nice little town and we enjoyed renting surf and boogie boards from Choco's and doing a kayak tour with another local vendor. There were a few nice restaurants, generally nice and helpful people and enough to do to stay busy for a few days. The groceries were expensive and some things we're used to from the states were hard to find. If we go back we'll pick up more groceries from the larger stores in Nicoya on the way in to be ready for the week.
- Our biggest complaint about the experience at the house would be that the kitchen is not well outfitted so support a decent size group. The appliances are adequate but our group of 10 couldn't fit our stuff in the fridge, the stove is small and lower quality, there's a mishmash of pots/pans and plates/bowls but just barely enough for our group to do one meal and there is no dishwasher. We made our own dinners most nights and we made it work but if cooking is your thing the kitchen makes it tough.
The views, the house and the playa are amazing!! This getaway is perfect for all kinds of trips with all kinds of people. The main house is equipped with the best pool ever, this is where we spent most of our time while in the house. Anything you are looking for, restaurants, beaches, activities, can be located about 5 minutes away.
The groundskeepers are a very nice family that live on the property but away from the main home, they keep everything looking great and clean. There is enough room in the main house for 6-7 people, the guest houses fit maybe 4-6 more in total. This would be a great Group vacation spot!!
All in all my experience at this home was nothing short of amazing.
Relax, enjoy and visit this beautiful Hacienda. It's the perfect get away for you and your family. You got an amazing view on three different beaches. Nature is all around the property and the unmatched privacy. The house keepers Freddy and his wife are beutiful and extremely kind people. Truly we don't have any complains. We are hoping visit anytime soon. It's true what every else said, you will need an 4x4 car to get to the top of the property, but nevertheless is part of an great experience. Also all modern gadgets can be found, internet, satellite tv, etc for whom may need it.
Regards from a tico.
