About the property

Character with home comforts and open views, sleeps 6, max 4 adults, 2 bedrooms

This cottage combines superb traditional features with an unrivalled location at the foot of Skiddaw in the village of Millbeck. The views all around are stunning!! Take your pick between Borrowdale and Derwent Water to the south and towering Skiddaw to the north.

PLEASE NOTE: Chestnut Cottage is NOT PET FRIENDLY and is NOT suitable for babies or very young children due to the steep and narrow staircase.

Internal features include a three hundred year old slate staircase, a double log burning stove, deep-set windows in thick stone walls and many original beams.

Outside there is a porch with slate seating, ideal for removing and storing boots and admiring the view.

The main entrance is through the traditional porch that leads into the living room. This room is divided into a cosy lounge area with comfy seating, log burning stove (logs provided), Satellite TV/DVD/ipod doc/Wi-fi, DVD library, board games and southerly aspect through two windows. The dining end of this room has a round table that seats six comfortably. Four chairs live in the dining area and additional chairs are available in the bedrooms.

A door from the dining area leads into the spacious slate floored kitchen. There is an electric oven and hob with extractor, microwave, large fridge freezer, full sized dishwasher and washing machine. There is a door from the kitchen which opens to views towards Borrowdale. This leads to the elevated patio area via a few stone steps. There is a patio dining set that includes a large round table and chairs.

A door from the living room leads to slate floored rear hallway that has ample hooks over a radiator, ideal for hanging coats etc. The shower room is on the ground floor, directly accessed from the rear hallway. There is a powerful shower, basin with illuminated mirror above, WC, heated towel rail and large recessed shelf for storing toiletries etc.

There is a narrow and steep, 300 year old, slate stair case that leads from the rear hallway to the upstairs landing.

The landing leads to the master bedroom and second bedroom. The master bedroom has a kingsized bed and fabulous views to the south. The second bedroom has bunk beds, a single bed with pull out (sleeps 4 in total) and has lovely aspects to the south and north. Both bedrooms have drawers for clothes storage. There is additional clothes storage in a wardrobe and extra chest of drawers on the landing.

The following are all included in the price of your holiday: Central heating; logs for the log burner; bed linen (beds made in advance of your arrival) and bath towels; hand towel, bath mat and liquid hand soap in the bathroom; cleaning after your stay; welcome hot drinks tray. We also provide a house-keeping welcome pack that includes loo roll, dishwasher tablets, bin liners and firelighting material. These are to help you settle in quickly, but NOT necessarily provide supplies for the duration of your stay.

A lovely home away from home...

  • 5 of 5

Chestnut Cottage is a lovely home away from home. The property is ideally located to explore the Lake District and surrounding area. A warm and cosy experience that transports you back to a simpler way of life. The cottage is equipped with high quality facilities as well as little touches that demonstrate the owner really cares, An example being the toys and books left for children. Everything was clean and to the highest standard. Highly recommended!

A truly lovely cottage in which we felt immediately at home, wrapped in its warmth and character.

We spent 4 nights at Chestnut Cottage and (if Ellen will have us!) we'll certainly be returning for more. We had, amazingly for the Lakes, superb weather all week which we spent slogging our way over mountains and across fells. The weather was so good that at one stage on the Thursday on top of Whalla Crag we encountered someone sun-bathing topless on a rock.(It was a man, I hasten to add!)

We had already spent two nights at the cottage with friends over New Years Eve and New Years Day and on returning home we immediately looked up its availability in March. Everything about it is appealing. The views are superb, the setting astonishing and the feel of chestnut Cottage, once you get used to the marvellous stone stairs, is more like coming home than going away. It has everything you could possibly need and does Keswick and the northern lakes, which I've always preferred to southern lakeland.

The Cat Bells walk, which would normally be about 9 miles, turned into a 17 mile all-day long haul after Jennie decided to ignore my advice and insisted that we should "carry on a bit further". That turned out to be across Maiden Moor...and then High Spy....and then the tortuous descent through the quarry and a route march back to Keswick. Despite all that, we were still talking to each other when we arrived at the Dog and Gun . The first pint of fine Keswick ale didn't touch the sides and we insisted on the large version of their Hungarian goulash. An exceptional break in one of our favourite parts of the world, made even more so by the warmth and character of Chestnut Cottage. Many , many thanks to Ellen and her family.

Quaint, beautiful, and charming.

  • 5 of 5

There were two of us sharing the two bedroom cottage (one in the double and one with single, bunkbeds, and trundle). It would be crowded for six, but just right for two to three. Very clean and to a high standard with appliances and kitchen ware.

The views were stunning, we didn't have wifi because of the weather, but were happy with the DVDs and woodburning fire. The owner was very good with her communication.

The local Filling Station cafe made an amazing breakfast and the Greens in Grasmere is well-worth the visit, especially for any gluten-free, vegetarian, or vegan diets!

Definitely pleased with the stay and would certainly recommend it to friends if they are going to the Lakes.

Owner's Response: Thank you Clare for kind comments and also for your understanding about the lack of Broadband. That turned out to be a local area problem, which has now been fixed by BT. You are correct to say that the cottage would be crowded with six, assuming that you mean six adults. We would just like to say that it works perfectly well for parties of six if children are included in that number.

Beautiful cottage with fantastic views

Arrived to find the stove warm and a delicious smell of wood smoke. Really cosy sitting room and very cute old stone staircase leading to large comfortable bedrooms. Stayed with a couple of girlfriends for a long weekend of walks, good food and wine. Thoroughly enjoyable. No complaints at all other than we all would have liked to stay so much longer!
