About Mary B
We are two British teachers who have been coming to France for 30 years. We have rented holiday homes for years and recently purchased our own french house which we love to share with others, and we look forward to welcoming new guests.
Mary B purchased this Villa in 2015
Why Mary B chose Hourtin
We travelled extensively, but when we come to France, we kept coming back to Hourtin, which we first visited 20 years ago. The location is perfect having access to both the beach and lake, and it seems to be an undiscovered gem as it's still relatively unknown to many Brits. Our children have spend many summers in Hourtin, and we particularly like the fact that it is quiet, calm and safe. We have tried to make our home accessible for visitors so that it is a 'home from home'.
What makes this Villa unique
This house has a wonderful location because it's peaceful and quiet, yet within ten minutes on a bike you can be sitting at the Port listening to live music, having tapas and drinking a chilled glass of wine. If you fancy the waves of the Atlantic coast, Hourtin Plage is just a short ten minute drive away. You can enjoy the wide, sandy beach which is carefully monitored by the life guards to ensure that the surfers and swimmers are both safe.

a great house, perfectly placed for forest, lake and beach! Great communication with property owners. We all had a wonderful time staying here. would definatly go again!
Like home from home
So many special touches in the house and everything thought of from coffee machine to home and country magazines. Very spacious accommodation and light and airy.
All you should need and more outside - the BBQ, table tennis, loungers, parasols etc... The pool an excellent size and there are even pool toys and inflatables.
Our family had one of the best holidays we've had here and I cannot recommend it highly enough.
I have returned to the UK very chilled and with many fond memories of the property and the beautiful surrounding area. We will definitely be back.
I'm so pleased that you had a wonderful time. It was a pleasure to have you as guests, and I'm glad you could relax in the sun with some magazines and a bottle of wine!
Perfect holiday in France
Lovely villa, in a really lovely area of France.. Visited with older children and so much to do and see.. I would definitely want to go back.. Many thanks to you Mary X
I'm so pleased that you had a wonderful time. It was a pleasure to have you as guests, and we'd love to welcome you back next year.
The property is really well equipped for a family holiday in a lovely location.
The property had everything we needed for a family holiday with young children. Mary has provided a cot, highchair, booster seat, children's cutlery etc The pool cover is excellent & provided peace of mind as our 1 year old and 3 year old played in the garden. It's extremely easy to pull on & off! The garden is really safe as its all enclosed & the gate can only be opened by a code. Our 3 year old loved scooting around the garden.
The house is very comfortable and our children enjoyed the basket of toys in the playroom. It's extremely useful having all the beach toys and beach mats too. The table tennis provided lots of entertainment for the adults.
Bikes allow you to reach the amenities quickly however we managed to park down by the port & beach in peak season without any problems. We did walk to the port for dinner- it took about 30 minutes but we also had lots of BBQs at the house.
One of the nicest things was having Mary at the end of the phone or email to answer any queries we had. Thank you Mary for a really great holiday house!
I'm so glad you and your family had a wonderful time. It was a pleasure to have you as guests.
perfect location and nice and functional house
Hourtin is a very good starting position for vacation around Bordeaux and the sea, and with a friendly village with good restaurant. The weather during our stay was a bit rainy and gray here in early June, but it also meant that we got off on several excursions. New in France but we will return - wherever we took ourselves, we got good food, wine and coffee.
The house was perfect for us - four adults and three children. We love to cook and the house was perfect for cooking and socializing at the dinner table, inside or out on the patio. It really was a house we felt at home.
There was so much to facilitate it; contact with Mary, dishwasher and washing machine, there was a bit dry goods, etc., outdoor play equipment for the children.
At the end of the stay, the weather became better and we could be out on the patio, barbecue and pool. We highly recommend!
Things we did as we are happy that we took the time to: Bourdeaux and their water mirror, the Dune du Pylac, oysters and wine in Pauillac, store La Cave in Hourtin, swim in the sea at Hourtin and eat crepes there. The best grocery store we went to yet with good price was Carrefour Lesparre. Small actions we made around the square in Hourtin.
Hanna - you were fabulous guests, and we are so pleased that you enjoyed your time in Hourtin. We'd love to welcome you back next year...hopefully with some sunshine.
Fantastic house, grounds and location! We cannot fault it - absolute perfection!
My husband and I and our 9 month old baby have just returned from an amazing 10 day holiday in this fab house. Mary was super helpful in the run up to our trip and her directions, recommendations and assistance throughout was spot on.
It was our first holiday with our baby so were a little apprehensive but the house is kitted out with everything we needed - travel cot, baby bath, high chair, toys, plates / bowls / cups the lot! The swimming pool has a substantial (yet attractive!) glazed cover so that it is completely safe for young children. It was too early to use the pool for us but it is a fantastic size and we assume the cover could be pulled over when needed to ensure the safety of wee ones. There is a wall and electric entrance gates surrounding the property from the quiet road which means the little ones can't escape!
We are reviewing the house from the perspective of a young family but the house and grounds are equally well suited to older families and groups with great sized bedrooms, dedicated TV room, ping pong table, great BBQ etc! The beds are extremely comfortable with big pillows and the kitchen and lounge are gorgeous, with a beautiful wood burning stove for cooler evenings. The kitchen was also equipped with everything we might need including oils, spices, salt etc. which meant we didn't have to think much further than wine and cheese when we went food shopping!
The location of the house is great as it is within a 10 minute walk from both the town square and the pretty port and lake. We rented bikes and a baby trailer on Mary's recommendation and it was indeed the best way to get about - separate cycling routes meant there were no issues with cars and with no hills in sight it was a relaxing and enjoyable way to see the area.
The church square was a lovely spot for coffee each morning and to buy the day's baguette. We got take away pizzas one night from the port and had a rose or two sitting out overlooking the port most evenings. There is a fabulous lakeside restaurant called Le Nautique 5 minutes drive from the house, which was very good - lots of fresh fish, garlic frites and great wine of course. Hourtin Plage is 15 minutes drive from the house and is a fantastic, long sandy beach perfect for surf watching. We also spent a day in Bordeaux itself - 50 minutes drive from the house, easy city centre parking, architecture, cafes and shopping to die for.
All in all an amazing holiday in a beautiful setting - thank you Mary B
Our house is a well-equipped home, which provides all the home comforts in a beautiful setting. The bedrooms are spacious and airy, and there is a large play/utility room with a sofa bed for up to two extra guests. The kitchen is a real home-from-home providing you with everything you would need to cater for your family. There is a large wooden table seating eight in the kitchen, in addition to a large outdoor table on the patio. The large garden and pool are fully enclosed, and are the perfect place to play and relax in privacy.
The house has Freeview TV and fast wifi, and there is a stereo with aux cable facility so you can easily plug in your mp3/iPods.
Hourtin is a lively little town with all modern amenities. There is a traditional market three times a week in the village square, where you can sample fresh oysters with wine, or buy a huge range of local produce and specialities. The town is surrounded by numerous well maintained cycle paths making your visit perfect for all age groups, but it is particularly suitable for young families. Hourtin Port is an ideal location for having a relaxing drink as you come off the beautiful sandy beach. The lake is the largest inland lake in France and provides beautiful shallow fresh water which is particularly enjoyable for young children. There are life guards to watch the beach during the summer months. Also at the port, children can enjoy the Ile des Enfants which is a haven for the little ones. There is a huge wooden fort, climbing frames, sand pits and a huge aqua park in the centre of the freshwater inlet. It is a perfect place for adults to relax and watch their children run around and explore all the activities. There is also an evening market at the Port twice a week during the summer months.
The beaches of the Atlantic coast are just a short ten minute drive away, although the cycle paths do go directly to the beach if you are feeling energetic. The wide, sandy beaches stretch for miles, and are perfect for surfers to enjoy the waves. There is a surf school on the beach, but if you want to just relax and enjoy the sun this beach is ideal. There are some lovely restaurants, bars and shops at the beach, and even at the height of the season it is not over-crowded. Lacanau beach is a 20 minute drive away, where you could watch the World Surf Championships which take place there every summer, and there are more lively bars and restaurants to be found.
Further afield are a huge range of golf courses, some of which rank amongst the best in the world. The Medoc region is famed for its fine wines, so you can book a tour at any of the grand chateaux; Margauz, Latour, Mouton Rothschild or Lafite. Bordeaux is only 40km away and is also well worth a visit to the historic centre.
