About Roy Wilkins

We grew up on the New Jersey shore and settled there. We love Vermont and we enjoyed all the ski areas in southern Vermont. We finally built a true log cabin in southern Vermont.

Roy Wilkins purchased this cabin in 1995

Why Roy Wilkins chose Ludlow / Okemo Mountain Area

We built a log cabin in 1995. The location is outstanding. It is secluded but close to the town of Chester and near the major town of Springfield. Is on a historic dirt road that has been in place for over 200 years. Green Mountain Tpk. The road has a historic covered bridge that goes over the Williams river. Outstanding hiking, biking and river activities. Chester is centrally located to it all! The Weston Playhouse, Vermont's oldest professional theater company in Vermont hosts live performances, plays and musicals and is only minutes away! The nearby town of Bellows Falls hosts many of Southern Vermont's summer events .

Love sports?

There is boating, canoeing, kayaking and swimming on the Connecticut River. Enjoy hiking, mountain climbing, mountain biking, and golfing all available in the Okemo Valley area! Unique summer sports and activities include horseback riding in Woodstock, Orvis fly fishing in Manchester and hot air ballooning in Quechee. During winter months you'll find downhill and cross country skiing, snowshoeing and snowmobiling.

What makes this cabin unique

The cabin sits facing south on a bluff overlooking the Williams river with rapids directly below the house. A lower deck sits on top of the rapids with a view of the mountains and sunsets.

The river is excellent for fishing for brook trout and has a five foot swimming hole at the end of the property. The lower, upper decks and new sunroom are excellent places to watch the sunset with a beverage and listen to the sounds of the rapids.

Love to explore?

The historic towns of Woodstock, Grafton, Walpole, Weston, Brattleboro and Manchester are just a few of the most beautiful and scenic places that are just a short drive away.

Love to shop?

The famous Vermont Country Store is just 4 miles away! The town of Manchester with all of its incredible outlets such as the Gap, Bose, Anichini, Crabtree & Evelyn, J. Crew and Polo just to name a few is 30 minutes away.

Love to Antique?

The Stone House Antique Center with over 80 dealers is great for fun antiquing is just down the street! There are all kinds of auctions, antique shows and fun eclectic flea markets to be found almost every weekend in Southern Vermont. The Brimfield Antique Show, put on three times a year, is one of the largest antique shows in the U.S

Great end of summer get away

  • 5 of 5

This was our second visit to the Wilkins log cabin. So many great memories! The house was perfect for three teens and our dogs. Tubing on the river, board games, s'mores, relaxing with a good book and a cup of coffee in the sunroom. We ventured out to Woodstock to the Sugarbush Hill Farm - great cheeses and maple syrup -and we all had our first kiss from a baby calf, lunch at country girl diner, sticky buns from baba louis', an ice cream stand in an antique store, where we ordered one scoop on a cone and received six small scoops...my 15 year old was in heaven. Some of the nicest people I have ever met - every where we went! Beautiful country roads and covered bridges...a great way to wrap up summer!

Nice location, overwhelming cow manure smell and not very clean

  • 2 of 5

A nice spot overlooking the Williams River. A good swimming hole although one has to be

concerned with agricultural runoff. All the amenities are included in terms of kitchen ware

but the grille is pretty dirty, the outside area is quite unkempt and beaten down and the basement area (which includes a lot of the advertised sleeping capacity) smells very moldy and is unpleasant.

The property is just downwind from a large dairy farm and quite frequently the smell of cow manure saturates the immediate environment. If you like the smell of cow manure, the place

is heaven.

Owner's Response: The basement issues have been resolved by placing a dehumidifier that has an internal pump and will keep the basement from getting musty. Bedroom air conditioners will be added in the near future. I have hired a new lawn service for all of the property.

This cabin photos well but wasn't what I expected.

  • 2 of 5

My family and I booked this cabin because it was near the water and could sleep us comfortably. Little did we know that it wasn't so kid friendly, with the steep drops steps away from the back deck,(Not so kid friendly) which made every body nervous, the very hard mattresses made it rough for people to get a good night sleep and the musty smell in the basement, not to mention the strong smell of cow manure every time the wind blew. We all had to deal with these conditions.

Overall my family and I had a good trip despite these conditions just note that it's not so kid friendly and definitely not animal friendly when it comes to these steep drops, steps away from the back door.

Rest and Relaxation

  • 5 of 5

Extremely neat and clean. Everything was exactly as stated in the description. The basement was bigger than we anticipated. The boys stayed for a couple of days and they enjoyed their privacy and rooms. The river was beautiful, nice sitting area in the afternoon. We brought our two pups with us, kept them leashed when we were outside. Kitchen was perfect. Thank you for sharing your home with us.
