About Thomas McElroy
We are four siblings Ben, Nic, Claire and Thomas McElroy who run this quaint historic farmhouse in the lake district national park that has been in our family for generations. With such strong family ties to the property we love to share such a special place with as many people as possible.
Thomas McElroy purchased this Farmhouse in 2014
Why Thomas McElroy chose Muncaster
We recently took over Hinning House from our father who grew up there. As the property is in such a lovely location and there are so many memories there it has never been an option to let it leave the family. Hinning House has been a great project and has only gotten better over the years. We all grew up visiting Hinning House at least a few times a year, walking the fells and swimming in the lakes and streams. The valley is such a peaceful place where all you can hear is the wind in the trees and the stream at the bottom of the drive and will always have a place in our hearts.
What makes this Farmhouse unique
Hinning House is the perfect retreat from the everyday hustle and bustle, stress and responsibilities. Situated not far from the coast but still just a short way from the tallest mountains in England the possibilities are endless and easy. After a long days walking the kitchen with its long dining table is a great place to enjoy a hearty meal. The two sitting rooms with their log stoves are the perfect places to relax after a day of any activities. Loads of garden space for games in the summer and a games room for rainy days. Hinning house has it all.

Comfortable, spacious and excellent place to stay for large groups
Felt very comfortable here, all the facilities we could have needed and in a lovely spot. Away from it all and quiet but with plenty of walks etc and things to see in the area just a short drive away. Weather was cold but the house was lovely and warm and cosy, and the kitchen was a great place for us all to eat together. Variety of bedrooms, but all with comfortable beds. We had a lovely three nights here and even with a party of 13 adults, we never felt crowded or short of space.
Carol and her group were great guests. I'm glad all the hard work that has gone into updating our heating system and improve the property is paying off! Thank you for being such wonderful guests, im glad you had a great stay and I hope to host you again in the future.
Lovely house, nice garden
We went as a group, and found it was perfect for a few days away. It had everything we needed and some nice surprising extras. It was charming, quiet and a lovely place to pass the time, even in the rain.
Excellent property which easily catered for our large group
We had a great time at Hinning House for the weekend. The house is huge with plenty of space both inside and out. The bedrooms were great and the different rooms downstairs meant people could do their own thing. The kitchen is amazing and has everything you need for a large group, including a table which seated us all for dinner. We were blessed with the weather but could easily of stayed there for a week or more. The owners were great to deal with and I would definitely recommend booking with them
Lovely house in beautiful place
A party of us went fell walking for a week. This is a perfect location for the grand Western Fells. Large house and garden with lovely views. We ate in every night and the kitchen was spot on for cooking for a large family or group. Large comfy sitting room with a wood burner quickly induced torpor after supper! Bedrooms fine. Loads of hot water and effective heating added to the comfort.
I wouldn't change a thing.
Thank you for such a lovely review! Its gratifying to know that all the hard work put in to overhaul the heating and hot water system has been enjoyed and well received! Next on the agenda is some interior decorating! We hope to host you again in the future and you can see how much further Hinning House has come.

You can trace the sinister old Coffin route over to Wasdale, you can see the ruins of the haunted staging post, and imagine life in a different time. Or after a bit of rain you can walk up through the rhododendrons alongside Stanley Falls as the water booms in the narrow ravine. The whole atmosphere at Hinning House is one of piece and tranquillity. This is a House where you can truly 'get away from it all' and totally relax. There is also plenty for children to do as they will love exploring the grounds and of course enjoying the games room!
