About Susan Poole

Kerry is a local design/builder who put her talents to work creating Mountainside Cottage. She incorporated her love of light and simplicity to create a place that is warm and inviting.

Susan lends her talents as the former owner of one of the Southeast's most successful bed and breakfasts, making sure that this cottage has everything necessary to make a traveler feel at home.

Having lived in the Asheville area for 20 years, we have a deep love and respect for the natural environment as well as the cultural opportunities found in this region of the Appalachian mountains.

Susan Poole purchased this house in 2008

Why Susan Poole chose Weaverville

When the 3 private acres adjacent to our 15 acres became available, we knew that would be the perfect place to build a vacation home for our extended families. As they are scattered around the world, it was important for us to offer a place that was near by, but afforded them the privacy they need and deserve. We soon realized this would also be a great place to offer as a vacation rental.

What makes this house unique

In this busy world, this is a unique opportunity to experience TOTAL privacy. One of the things we love about the cottage is sitting on the covered deck, looking out into the woods, and listening to the sounds of nature. It's also great to drive into Weaverville, about 5 minutes away, grab a pastry or two at the world's BEST bakery, and come back and relax on the patio or in the hot tub on the deck.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Thank you so much for letting us stay at the cottage! We had a wonderful time! Everything was so clean and organized and the secluded location made it so easy to relax! We had a great time visiting the sites around Asheville.

We definitely will be back around our anniversary! We loved staying here. Thank you so much for your hospitality!

Sun-filled, beautiful, clean, private cabin with stunning views close to everything!

  • 5 of 5

This cabin was just perfect for our first visit to the Asheville area during Thanksgiving week, and Susan could not have been more gracious, responsive, or accommodating! My husband and I loved being able to have our dog with us, and the cabin was very spacious for the three of us (and we didn’t even utilize the loft, whIch would be perfect for kids). It was also immaculately clean when we arrived.

We LOVED the views from the hot tub on the back deck, and we appreciated that the deck only has access from the house (not the yard) so that our dog could hang out there while we caught the sunset or star gazed from the hot tub.

The cabin’s location was perfect. We enjoyed the view of the French Broad River from the deck and from the road to the cabin (which was an adventure, but which our Jeep handled without ever having to use 4WD). We loved the little town of Weaverville and the shops and restaurants it had to offer. Groceries, gas, and great breakfast spots were just a few minutes away. Asheville itself was a short and very pretty drive away.

The cabin had everything we needed. The couch and recliners were super comfy, and we enjoyed watching the Macy’s parade on the tv. The bed was very comfortable, and the kitchen was well-stocked with plenty of dishes, pots, pans, etc. I was able to make a nice Thanksgiving feast for two without any problem.

Our favorite part, though, was by far that hot tub out on the deck! It was definitely a highlight of a trip that was filled with a perfect combination of exploring the area and relaxing back at such a beautiful home base!

Owner's Response: Thank you, thank you, Tara! We are so glad you enjoyed your stay. We try to think of things that will make visitors' stay more fun and relaxing, so it's great that we hopefully achieved that. And it's wonderful to hear that you liked Weaverville as well. It often gets overlooked by its "big sister" Asheville, but it really is a neat little town!

Perfect Private Getaway!

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I recently spent a weekend here for our anniversary and it was perfect. It was immaculately clean, had everything we needed, and provided just the right amount of seclusion. It was conveniently located to gas stations, grocery stores, and restaurants and was about 15 minutes from downtown Asheville. We spent the nights soaking in the hot tub, watching movies comfortably in the living room, and got great nights' sleep! The friendly and responsive owners, Susan and Kerry, were extremely accommodating in the frustrating event of a flat tire for which we were very grateful. We would certainly stay here again and recommend it to anyone looking for a quiet, private, "homey" place to stay while visiting Asheville!

Perfect cabin in the woods

  • 5 of 5

Such a clean, quaint little cabin secluded on a mountain. It was the perfect place for my fiancé and myself to celebrate our engagement in Asheville! Had everything we needed and getting to the city took us all of 12 minutes. Everything was clean and comfortable, Susan was quick to answer all of my questions before our arrival. Would definitely book again!

Peaceful Retreat

  • 4 of 5

I was so impressed with the overall cleanliness of the whole cabin! It was the perfect place for a quiet retreat from the busyness of life! Although being tucked away it was easy access to Black Mountain, Asheville and The Biltmore! Susan’s attention to detail meant all my needs were met and I was able to just relax!

Perfect!

The house was perfect. The location was perfect. You get the feeling you are miles away from everything but it only took 15 minutes to get to Downtown and we took the scenic river road.

Quiet, secluded retreat!

  • 5 of 5

We loved our long weekend at the cottage! Everything you could need was provided, the house was clean and comfortable, and we loved the privacy. Despite being very secluded, it was only a short drive to downtown, and being able to have our dogs with us for the trip was a huge bonus as we all enjoyed lots of hikes and outdoor fun!

Would highly recommend with only one major caveat - the gravel road up to the rental is no joke - especially the last section right before the parking spot for the cottage. We have a front wheel drive hybrid car (Prius V), and we did make it, but I would not recommend attempting it in a similar vehicle because it was not really up to the challenge. We had past experience driving on these kinds of roads with other vehicles, and knew what to expect, but were surprised how much our car struggled on the last incline (got stuck a couple times, and ended up parking a bit below the actual designated spot), and we doubt we'd have even made it up earlier parts of the road if it had rained much more during our stay.

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for your thoughtful review. We recognize that the road to the cottage can be a challenge. As you know in our write-up, we do recommend at a minimum front-wheel drive. But in reading your review, perhaps we should revise the wording to exclude hybrid vehicles. We are glad that the road issues didn't take away from your enjoyment of the cottage.
