Cottage in Gers, Midi-Pyrenees, France: Peyrouat is an old farm hamlet, now divided into two properties, consisting of several traditional stone buildings. The pretty, spacious, 18th century cottage is the oldest building on the site and has been recently restored to include all modern comforts whilst maintaining many original features such as stonework, beams and fireplace. The grounds are very extensive and include many old trees, open land for playing games and, of course, the private 11x 5 metre swimming pool. There is a charming private garden, a sunbathing terrace and a further covered terrace with barbecue for dining, all south and west facing so extremely sunny right into the evening. The surrounding countryside is very peaceful, planted with sunflowers, vines and wheat. Medieval bastide villages abound: the nearest, Montréal, is 6 kilometres away.
Food and Wine: We are surrounded by Armagnac producers and excellent Côtes de Gascogne, also nearby St.Mont, and Madiran. Gascony is foodie country - confit and magret of duck and goose, foie gras, and prunes from Agen are found in the many local markets and restaurants. Great spot for gourmets. Full guides to good degustation spots available!
Tourist Attractions: Local medieval bastide villages such as Laressingle and moated Fourcès. Historical monuments such as Roman Seviac or the Abbaye de Flaran. Day trips to the pine forests and Atlantic surfing beaches of Les Landes; to Biarritz, the Basque region (and Lourdes) or the Pyrenées. Toulouse and Bordeaux are also within easy reach.
Activities: Within 10 minutes there is a golf course at Guinlet (18 holes). Also tennis, horse-riding, boating on canal and river at nearby Condom, and several pleasure lakes closeby. Peyrouat lies on the Camino Real, / Chemin de St Jacques, the ancient pilgrim route to Santiago de Compostella. Many modern pilgrims still walk this route today.
The property was clean tidy and well maintained. There is a great pool with sun beds and umbrellas and lovely spacious gardens. The gite is very well equipped and includes BBQ. The property is in a rural location and a car is essential, however, there are lovely villages to explore in the surrounding areas, wine and Armanac tasting at Cassolgnes, Pellehauat etc. Markets at Eauze, Condom and Lectoure worth a visit. The owner has also provided bikes which you are welcome to use to explore the surrounding areas. It ensure a very relaxing holiday. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay (been coming for about 9/10 years) and look forward to returning again.
This property is located in peaceful contryside, has character and plenty of space. The garden is very large and the private pool of a very good size and gets sun all day, with water temperature 26-28 degrees. The solar shower is a nice touch. We found the house suitably equiped and perfect for a family of 4, with 2 children (aged 8 and 11). Good wifi and satilite TV if you had had enough of the sunshine! Pool towels, linen and cleaning are all included, so no cleaning on the day of departure. We felt that the price was good value when compared to other properties.
Very clean, tidy, well presented. The garden for the dogs was fantastic, the pool looked so inviting, just wasn't warm enough for us, but I am sure it would be well used in summer. Enjoyed watching the red squirrel's running up the trees from the sitting room window. Will recommend this place to family and friends.
Montreal village is in the North of the department of the Gers, close to the market towns of Condom and Eauze (10 and 14 kilometres), the two main centres for wine and Armagnac. It borders on the forests of Les Landes to the west and the Lot et Garonne to the north and east. To the south the massif of the Pyrenees is magnificently visible on clear days in Spring and Winter. The larger regional centres of Agen and Auch are a 40 minute drive, while Toulouse, Bordeaux and Biarritz airports are all 2 hours or under. The Gers itself is a very unspoiled, traditional rural area, with a small population and quiet roads which meander over undulating landscape with beautiful views of the Pyrenees. The people are very friendly and the local farms and vineyards produce what the area is famous for: ducks, geese, foie gras, wines, armagnac and sunflowers!
Other Activities: Boating on river and canal
