About Vicki Salsbury
We built this house in 2007. My husband is the carpenter and I like to decorate. We both grew up on Mount Desert Island and our parents were Islanders too. We were excited to find a property on the ocean and knew we would have to rent it in the summer to be able to afford it. We go to our camp in the summer and love sharing our house with renters, especially when they leave notes about how much they enjoyed it.

Best vacation house ever!
Our family LOVED this property and can't wait to come back. The house is much larger than the pictures show and is full of natural light and fresh air. The property is full of fun little surprises such as paths and fairy houses in the woods. It comes with everything you would want or need. We loved the privacy (no neighbors in sight) and having our own little beach (kayak and life vests to use too!). The kids loved seeing the local wildlife (deer and raccoons) wander through our yard. Lots of books and toys for any age. Jet tub in the master bath and AC unit in the master bedroom. Vicki left a wonderful book full of advice (best places to eat, nearest grocery stores, etc.) plus lots of brochures and guides for activities in the area. We felt so at home and this house truly made our vacation so special. We had originally planned on staying in Bar Harbor and I was hesitant about staying off MDI, but now I would never have it any other way. My kids (5 and 10) are already begging us for this to be our vacation house every summer! We will certainly be back. Zero negatives.
Lovely home, property.
Our family's experience at the Gatehouse was fantastic. The photos of the property, as nice as they are, don't really do the place justice. The house is spacious (perfect for our family of four), tastefully decorated, and there is plenty of privacy. A pleasant surprise: there's access to a quintessentially Maine rocky beach, which seems to be private--never saw another soul the week we were there. I should also add that Vicki was kind and helpful throughout the process. We had a snag with the HomeAway reservation system, and she went out of her way to accommodate us. I had worried we were a little too far away from Acadia/Bar Harbor, but that turned out not to be warranted: it's an easy, pleasant drive and it was good to be away from the hustle and congestion of Bar Harbor. Highest recommendation.
Wonderful Vacation Spot
I came to the Gatehouse with my wife and 2 year old for a much needed vacation. The property was fantastic. The house was very clean upon arrival which made us feel comfortable immediately. The kitchen was well equipped with everything we needed to cook meals, and the living room area had a great reading nook that we took full advantage of.
The property itself is situated on the waterfront. From the edge of the water there is a great view of Mt. Desert Island. It's a very peaceful spot. We were able to get to Bar Harbor/Acadia about 30 minutes give or take depending on traffic. It's also less than 10 minutes to Lamoine Beach, which is a fun family spot.
All in all, we were very impressed and thoroughly enjoyed our time at the Gatehouse.
Gorgeous, private, comfortable and so much for the kids to do!
Our family of 4 stayed here in July of 2014 and absolutely loved it. (This review is very late and I so I could only enter 2015.) When we first drove down the gravel road and the woods opened up to the beautiful view of house, field and water, we simply could not believe our luck! It was beautiful, as was our entire week here. The house is wonderfully comfortable and beautifully furnished with antiques (we have since begun searching for and buying only older pieces for OUR home!) and there were so many wonderful books to read--I ended up making a list and taking it home with me. Beds were comfortable, the kitchen had everything we needed and more, and the living room was so cozy. We loved having all the space for the kids to run around outside and we spent a lot of time watching the tide roll in and out and collecting rocks and shells on the beach. The trail through the woods was also a big hit with the kids. Sitting out on the deck with a glass of wine and the water view was a hit with the parents! The house is about a half hour from Acadia, a bit farther than we hoped, but we just went out all day and when we came "home" it was lovely to be away from it all. Highly recommend. It was a wonderful vacation in this lovely home.
Summer vacation retreat
My boyfriend and I stayed at the Gatehouse this past week and were in for a wonderful suprise! The pictures of the house doesn't do it justice! We had never been to acadia national park before. Really beautiful! Went biking, hiking, kayaking on long pond. Great lobster at Trenton lobster pound, awesome scalops at Jordans snack shack. After being out all day and then coming home to the Gatehouse was incredible! We loved all the décor and special touches! I spent hours reading in the window seat soaking up the sunlight later in the afternoon or early in the am. Saw 2 deer playing in the backyard! We loved the open floor plan, high ceilings, long wood counter top to sit and eat breakfast at. Thank-you again for sharing your home with us. Be back soon!
We're so pleased that folks find a pleasant surprise when they arrive at our "Gatehouse." Even when they don't write a review they write wonderful things in our guest book saying they couldn't have picked a better place for their home away from home, how central its location is to everything they want to do, the great book collection and sound system, and even the adults love exploring the Pine Cone Path looking for elves and gnomes! Thanks for the nice review and we hope you come back.
Books and Beach Walks and Kayaking
This house is terrific! The house is beautifully appointed with a cheery and fully-equipped kitchen, a great counter to hang out at, and good views of the water. We felt at home immediately! If you're a reader (or a writer!), don't bother to bring books with you because this house is fully stocked with a great variety of literary novels, non-fiction, childrens, and interesting stuff like a huge coffee-table book of New York Times front pages dating back as far as you can think. Despite Acadia looming nearby, you might find it hard to get out of the window seat to explore it.
That said, we had three great paddles in our kayaks, directly from the beach, up the Jordan River and into Eastern Bay. Great launching spot just across a small meadow and orchard and a rocky beach that's easy to navigate, plus you can walk for miles in two directions when the tide is right.
Total privacy at the Gatehouse, which is at the very end of a dead-end road.
Lovely, lovely spot and every little detail is attended to. Very peaceful and aesthetically pleasing setting, both inside and out. Only a half hour to everything in Acadia, too, and a great farmer's market on the way so you can stock up on fresh local fruits and veggies.
You won't be disappointed!
We love when our renters appreciate all the books we have in our house. I have always thought writers in particular would find it the perfect place to relax, to read and to write!
If you've come to see the sights, there's plenty to do. Acadia National Park is 20 minutes away with lakes, mountains, ocean drives for walking or biking. There are rental places for bikes or kayaks, whale watches, sight-seeing cruises, lots of shops, restaurants, movie theaters, museums, a zoo, even an oceanarium. There's a fun park nearby in Trenton with a water slide, miniature golf and other attractions. We'll have brochures at the house for you to check out. Very near to us is Lamoine State Park and Lamoine Beach, one of Maine's best kept secrets, according to Down East Magazine, and we agree. It's just beautiful and gives you a breathtaking view of the mountains of Acadia across the bay. There is also Blunt's Pond nearby for swimming. Other Activities: Wildlife Viewing, kayaking, sight-seeing cruises
