The island of Vulcano, the first you meet coming from the coast of Sicily, is a hamlet of Lipari and has an extension of 21 square kilometers. In ancient times it was called "Therasia", then "Hiera", because sacred to the god Vulcan. According to Greek mythology the island was the site of the forges of Hephaestus, god of fire, technology and metallurgy. Roman mythological tradition identifies with Hephaestus the god Vulcan, hence the current name of the island where he forged weapons for the gods with the help of the Cyclops. The island owes its existence to the fusion of several volcanoes of which the largest is the Vulcano della Fossa, the crater which was active at irregular intervals since ancient times, as is documented in the record of the classical age. In the second century. C. seems to have occurred particularly intense eruptive activity concurrently which emerged from the waters of the new crater Vulcanello, which, erupting, gave rise to a smaller island joint main island. After this date, the Fossa crater began a prolonged resting phase. A recovery eruption occurred between 1727 and 1739, giving rise to the phenomenon rhyolitic obsidian flow is seen on the north-west of the volcano. The ash spill washed over Lipari, Salina, Stromboli and the Sicilian coast front. They have documented more eruptions in 1771 and in 1783; the last occurred between 1888 and 1890. Since then, the volcano has never ceased to demonstrate its vitality and even today, such phenomenons, including the many fumaroles that strongly characterize the environment, the landscape and the intense aromas of the island, establishing the uniqueness. Particularly striking is the natural phenomenon of thermal springs, on the beach at Porto Levante, so the water and mud are heated by the heat of the sulfur dioxide produced from fumaroles weaker. Activities and hot springs of Vulcano are a unique phenomenon, which currently attracts thousands of people every year. The concrete existence of curative mud and the warm waters of Vulcano witness observations and experiences made over the last fifty years, now that certify the benefits and therapeutic effects.
