The island of Vulcano, the first you meet coming from the coast of Sicily, is a hamlet of Lipari and has an extension of 21 square kilometers. In ancient times it was called "Therasia", then "Hiera", because sacred to the god Vulcan. According to Greek mythology the island was the site of the forges of Hephaestus, god of fire, technology and metallurgy.
