Fabulous Family Vacation

  • 5 of 5

My family and I stayed on Chickadee Lane to celebrate my parents' 50th Wedding Anniversary. Three generations and one house could be difficult, but Chickadee Lane provided both a retreat and welcoming atmosphere where everyone could gather together in the fabulous living room to play games (oh the view!) or scatter to bedrooms for a few alone moments, check out the big TV in the basement, or go off on an adventure in Acadia National Park. The kitchen was fabulous and well equipped as we often cooked large family meals which we enjoyed on the deck. (The large dining room table served as an activity center and maybe as a table on the one rainy day!) The big bedroom/bath on the first floor was great for my older parents (no stairs), and also provided a private spot for naps or just looking out the window. Other sleeping arrangements allowed for almost everyone to feel like they had their own space when they needed it. The house was very clean and well maintained, and all interactions with the owner were great. I had several questions which they were very obliging about answering. Shopping, restaurants and Acadia are close by, but not close enough to intrude on the privacy of Chickadee Lane. You can spend hours just watching the sun set and listen to the abundant bird life. A highlight for us was a trip to Great Cranberry Island. The house came with lots of guide books to help us figure out what to do! Thanks for helping our family create some phenomenal memories!

Fabulous House!

  • 5 of 5

We loved this house, and would recommend it for so many reasons. My favorite spot was the deck off the kitchen. Wine in hand, we snacked and chatted there every night, watching the sun go down. It's the epitome of relaxation. We cooked for ourselves most nights, as our days were so full of hiking and sightseeing. The kitchen has everything you'd want.

Five of us shared the house, but it's huge and never felt crowded. Lots of space downstairs for everyone to watch the game or whatever is on TV. We stayed for five nights - which was perfect. There are many things to do and see.

The island is small, so it's a short drive to get anywhere, but we loved that the house felt remote. It's on the "quiet side" of the island. From the house, you can walk down to a little path that's part of the nature preserve, reaching the shore within 30 minutes at most. The shady trails looked like fairies could pop out at any moment. There are many other trails close by, and the beautiful Echo Lake is just minutes away.

We enjoyed a lobster dinner at Beal's Lobster Pier in Southwest Harbor, but my favorite meal was lobster rolls at Thurston's Lobster Pound down in Bernard at the tip of the western part of the island.

Don't hesitate. This is a terrific place to stay.

What a quiet, beautiful, and wonderful place!

  • 5 of 5

Without a doubt this was a wonderful place to stay (and I agree with a previous poster- the pictures really don't do it justice!)

When I was a kid, my family would always visit Mount Desert Island, and I'm glad I had the chance to visit this beautiful property. First- the location is very good. My favorite part was that I could fly into the Bar Harbor airport and be at the house in under ten minutes. It's still a manageable drive to anywhere on the island too. But the location's best asset is the view westward into the bay. The sunsets were amazing, and there was plenty of room for exploring with a beautiful terraced garden. Each room in the house is designed to look out on the water (the view from the Master Bedroom is great). There is a deck facing westward that was wonderful for grilling too. The house had high ceilings and beautiful wooden walls. As a house it can easily fit eight. There's a room downstairs with TV and a few couches, which are good for lazy nights after hiking, biking, or kayaking.

The house is about ten minutes from the town of Somesville, and a little more than twenty minutes by car to Bar Harbor. All the Acadia sights are an easy drive. So it's close enough to everything on the island while remaining it's quiet charm. Since moving south it's gotten harder to make it to Mount Desert Island, but I"m hoping to make it next year.

A lovely retreat

  • 5 of 5

We stayed in this house for a week in August. The house is gorgeous, much nicer than the pictures on the website. Views are superb, especially the sunsets -- we often ate out on the deck to watch the sunset. Stars were great too, as there is very little light pollution on this part of the island. The bedrooms are roomy, and a spacious bedroom and bath on the first floor was welcome by my aging parents. Several good restaurants are nearby for takeout... not to mention some great hiking trails. Highly recommended!

A Lovely Experience

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at the Chickadee Lane house the week prior to July 4th and had a truly wonderful stay. We had stayed in this house three years ago, during a hot spell, and loved swimming in the local pond each day after hiking. This time the weather was cooler, so we swam less and hiked more on the paths from the house to the shore and the mountains, took a boat trip to see puffins, and relaxed in this gorgeous setting.

One of our favorite activities when we come to Maine is cooking seafood, and the kitchen is amply supplied for all our cooking needs. The dining room table easily seats 8, but we often sat at the nook overlooking the water for smaller meals. The deck also has a great view of the water, and in late June all the birds were singing.

The master bedroom is spacious and comfortable with spectacular views of the water. And the house is big enough that everyone can go off and rest or read in privacy should there be a rainy day.

We love this house and its location, and will definitely be back.

Quiet Gem

  • 5 of 5

We had an AMAZING week here.

Our large and multi-generational family of seven stayed at this house in July. We had a fantastic visit and we plan to come back next year. We hiked several mountains, ate in nearby restaurants, swam in a nearby pond, and walked to the water and rocks from the house.

Everyday had a new and fun activity.

The spaciousness of the 3-level house was perfect for the three generations of our family. People could work, rest, or watch TV downstairs and not hear any noise from the activities of the other family members. The several large bedrooms also let us spread out and have privacy when needed.

The entire house is beautiful, with light wood and while walls. The property is expansive, with a garden, yard, and path to the water. My 3 year old picked blueberries from the many bushes planted there. Paths through the Blagden Preserve provided an easy walk to the water, and our child loved looking for shellfish at the beach during low tide. Next time we will bring binoculars so that we can see the seals on the rocks at the Preserve.

We enjoyed hiking, playing golf at the nearby public courses, and watching the boats come into the harbor. We didn't have time to kayak or ride bikes, but hope to on our next visit. The roads around the house have few cars, and would be ideal for biking, and the Acadia Carriage roads are also nearby. We want to take the kayak out next time, as you can launch it just down the street from the house.

We HIGHLY recommend this house. The house itself and its surroundings are wonderful. There are many great dining opportunities on the island, in nearby town hill, bar harbor, and southwest. But every night, we rushed home to watch an amazing sunset over the water.
