About the property

House, 2 Bedrooms, 1 Bath, (Sleeps 4)

The location of this private home in the small fishing village of Esperanza provides access to beaches, restaurants, local groceries, produce markets, kayak/snorkel rental shops, clothing and gift stores. The neighborhood is a mixture of local residents and renters. The homes are painted in a rainbow of colors; flowering bushes and trees abound. Magnolia House is cooled inside by ceiling fans and air conditioning. The house has been extensively rebuilt, replacing and enlarging the original structure to incorporate high ceilings, lots of windows, new appliances in the kitchen and an all new bathroom. The front patio is an excellent spot for morning coffee and afternoon cocktails.

There are two, comfortably-sized bedrooms, one with a double bed and the other with a pair of twin beds. The bathroom has a large, walk-in, tiled shower.

Whether you choose to swim, snorkel, eat out, cook in, tour the bioluminescent bay or read a book, you'll have a comfortable home base. In addition, you'll have the knowledgeable assistance of my caretakers who will meet you at the ferry or airport, if you wish.

About The Owner

As a retired school teacher with a love of reading, traveling and swimming, Vieques appeals to my sense of adventure. I've been a tourist in many places in the world, but I love actually having real estate to make me feel rooted and to give me a sense of belonging. It creates a balance between the 'foreign' and the familiar.

The Owner purchased this house in 2004

Why The Owner chose Vieques Island

I chose Vieques because it's an island in the Caribbean!!!!

What makes this house unique

Magnolia House is private, yet part of a neighborhood that is vibrant. It's where real people live, people who get up in the morning, send their children to school and go to work. The beaches are exquisite and Esperanza is a village hosting world travelers while maintaining its own character.

Welcoming and cute

  • 5 of 5

The Magnolia house was the perfect renal for my daughter and I. It was spacious, comfortable and had all of the comforts of home. It had a full kitchen, two bedrooms that were kept comfortably cool. Neighborhood was very nice And we had off street parking. Loretta was easy to deal with and made the rental process easy, Jay was the absolute best!! He answered all of my questions prior to arrival. Jay met us upon arrival and kept in touch to make sure we were doing ok during our entire trip to the Vieques. He informed us of anything that we needed to know while we were there. He went above and beyond to make sure and assist us to get back to San Juan during bad weather upon our departure, and therefore decreasing our stress and anxiety. I will definitely recommend the Magnolia house, Loretta and Jay.

Perfect Week

  • 4 of 5

What I loved best about my stay here was living "in the neighborhood." I loved hearing the music of neighbors, the roosters, the doggies, the frogs. It was so fun to rent bikes and bike down to the main strip. The bakery around the corner was amazing. Joe and Mimi were helpful beyond my expectations. I stayed there with my husband and two teen/pre-teen kids. They loved every minute. If you're going to stay here, please treat the doggie well (we named her "Coqui" after the frog-type in the area). She's sweet as can be.

Perfect home base for exploring the island

  • 5 of 5

We loved our stay in Vieques and this sweet house was the perfect place to begin and finish our days exploring all it's natural beauty. Joe was tremendously helpful and welcoming when we arrived and gave us lots of great advice on snorkelling, restaurants and beaches. The house was clean, comfy and spacious for our family of four, and we also appreciated having beach chairs and a washing machine. Also really loved being able to make our own breakfasts and lunches, though the restaurant options on the malecon were so great that we always walked down for dinner and a nice evening stroll. Our favorite way to travel is to stay in places that are charming, budget-friendly and allow us to feel connected to a place or neighbourhood - Magnolia House was the perfect spot!

Owner's Response: Dear Kathleen, You sum up what I hope my guests experience! It's a pleasure to know that you and your family enjoyed your stay in Magnolia House and your visit to Vieques. I do hope you return. After the long winter, it's a great place to soak up the sun. All the best, Loretta

A Wonderful Place to Bring in a New Year

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at the Magnolia House for six days and found it perfect for our needs. We loved that it was on a street with people who live there year-round as we prefer to not spend out time in "tourist only" areas. The location was ideal for us -- it's a few blocks away from the Malecon, a few blocks away from one of the main grocery stores in Esperanza, and a 10-15 minutes walk to Sun Bay. The absence of internet allowed us to fully immerse ourselves in being in Esperanza and being with each other. The porch is a perfect spot for some evening cocktails. If we return to Esperanza, I'd pick the Magnolia house again!

Another wonderful stay

  • 5 of 5

This was our second stay at Magnolia House and it was once again fantastic! I am hesitant to let the secret out of the bag :) Magnolia House is walking distance to the Malecon where you can stroll, eat, drink and people watch! The house is incredibly comfortable with everything you need. We especially enjoyed sitting outside to read in the afternoon.

This year we discovered the joys of snorkeling and there were splendid sights rights off the pier in Esperenza. You can spend your time here without a car easily or rent a car or scooter for easy outings to the beautiful beaches on the island.

A special thanks, once again, to Joe and Mimi for making the trip extra special with their information and tips. Coqui Grill in Isabel II is fantastic and Tin Box has delicious oysters, fresh salads, and a great happy hour.

Owner's Response: Vacation time is so precious and I am grateful that you chose to spend it at Magnolia House... twice. Thank you I am pleased that you recognized Mimi and Joe's outstanding support and will definitely pass it on to them. Don't worry about letting out any "secret." What happens in Vieques, stays in Vieques!

The Magnolia House far exceeded all of our expectations. The living room was comfortable and included fans to keep us cool, books to read about the beautiful island, and even music to listen to while sipping the local beer, Medalla! The kitchen was completely stocked with every item that we needed! The bedrooms were wonderful and included air conditioners in each. The bathroom also had everything that we needed including the longest shower stall that I have ever seen! The house was absolutely clean and we easily walked to the town of Esperanza in the evenings for dinner and drinks. Thank you to Joe for all his information on the beaches, restaurants, etc. and for going above and beyond helping us: to get groceries on our first evening AND then waiting to unpack and driving us to a lovely restaurant to unwind on our first night on Vieques.

Everything was PERFECT!!
