The cottage is in the small village of Holton, 1 mile from Halesworth and 8 miles from Southwold. It is possible to get to the cottage entirely by public transport (train to Halesworth and then bus) if you do not drive or have a car.
We have a growing list of regular clients who return every year.
The cottage is very well equipped and comfortable. Gas central heating. It is ideally located close to Southwold, Dunwich (award-winning fish and chips), Halesworth, Aldeburgh, Snape, Framlingham Castle and Orford. If you are looking for a reasonably priced coast or beach holiday, then consider renting a beach hut at Southwold to enhance your holiday.
Great location for the Latitude Festival and only a short drive to Snape Proms and Aldeburgh music events. Other regular events in the area include Halesworth Arts Festival and various exhibitions in Aldeburgh and other towns. The Cut Theatre at Halesworth hosts a wide range of productions and workshops throughout the year.
Two of the countrys finest nature reserves (Dunwich Heath, and RSPB Minsmere) are also close by. The whole area is unspoilt and fantastic for walking and cycling.
There is an excellent farm shop in the village which has great local produce, frozen meals and essential supplies. Halesworth is one mile away (footpath all the way) and has a number of independent shops, cafes plus a supermarket. The area is well worth exploring and a contrast and complete antidote to the busy coastal towns. The cottage is close to a 7.5 mile circular walk taking in parts of a disused small gauge railway line plus former canal tow paths. It is also close to the National Cycle Network.
St Mary's comprises two former farm workers, combined into one quirky cottage many years ago. The property is approximately 300 years old. It has now been extended and it is quaint and full of character (exposed wood beams).
Please note that the staircase, which does have solid handrails, could be difficult for infirm guests and toddlers should take care.
There are three bedrooms, and it will sleep 4/5. We charge extra for the fifth person and do not normally accept five adults. Two bedrooms have a double bed and the third bedroom (which is adjacent to one of the doubles) has a single bed. Please look at the layout diagram of the rooms, which is typical for such a cottage, under the description of the property. There are fitted wardrobes and other storage in the double bedrooms and bedside tables/drawers in all the rooms. The adaptable rooms are perfect for a family of four with two children (under 16 years), or two couples. For enquires of five people, we may ask you to confirm the age of children and confirm that you have viewed the layout and are content.
A travel cot can be provided upon request. Best quality Dorma allergy proof bedding is provided in all rooms that will be occupied. Towels are also provided on the same basis.
There is off road parking for one car and a second car can be parked in the road (no restrictions). There is additional parking (free) about 200 metres away.
The cottage has an attractive enclosed garden, with a large patio area. A BBQ kettle, table, chairs and sun loungers are available so you can sit outside.
The large kitchen dining area overlooks the garden. The cosy lounge, which features an open fire, and separate 'snug', with an electric stove, makes this an ideal year-round destination. A starter pack for the fire place in the lounge can be provided upon request for a small fee (November to March).
There is a family bathroom upstairs (bath with electric shower over plus w.c.). Separate cloakroom downstairs. A hair dryer is available.
The kitchen is fitted with a compact electric cooker (new in 2018 - single oven and separate grill), kettle, toaster, microwave/grill, sandwich-maker, dishwasher, refrigerator and washing machine. There is a Krups coffee machine (requires Dolce Gusto pods).
The lounge has a smart television (connects to the internet) and there is a Google Chromecast fitted to it. You will be able to view Netflix (your own account) or cast other programmes such as BT Sports (your own account) from a tablet/smart-phone to the television. There is a BluRay player also plus a selection of DVDs. A Bluetooth speaker system is available (connects to your smart phone/tablet). There is a selection of board games and books for our guests to enjoy. Free wifi.
You will find a Welcome Pack in the kitchen with essential items when you arrive.
We will accept one well behaved dog; downstairs only please. A fee applies, so please ensure that you tick the relevant box when you book. Water and feeding bowls provided should you forget your own. We can provide a large or small plastic dog bed upon request. Suitable dog walks are close by, either on heathland or along a footpath to Halesworth or Blyford.
Our normal changeover day is Saturday, but we can be flexible so please do ask because we might be able to accommodate you. The cottage is normally available from 3 pm on your arrival day. We ask that you vacate the cottage by 10 am latest on your departure day.
St Mary's Cottage is the perfect base for you to explore the Suffolk Heritage Coast and surrounding area. Only 20 minutes drive from Southwold or Aldeburgh and you can relax in the garden at the end of the day. You can hire a beach hut in Southwold for a week which can enhance your stay in the area considerably (see Beach-Huts.com).
We have a growing list of regular clients who book every year.
There are lots of alternative attractions if the weather isn't perfect! You will find a small selection of information leaflets about local attractions, bus timetables and take-away menus in St Mary's. There is also an Ordnance Survey map in the cottage that walkers and dog owners may find useful.
