The Granary formed part of the working farm at Skiplam Grange until relatively recently. It has been converted with taste, flair and environmental considerations to give it new life and purpose, and many original features have been retained. The Granary remains part of the Skiplam Grange site and now offers comfortable accommodation in a relaxing and stunning country setting; yet is barely a stone’s throw from a host of amenities.

No longer a working farm, Skiplam Grange is to all intents and purposes a smallholding. The Grange farm lies on the edge of the North York Moors National Park, looking down towards Skiplam Woods, and is a five minute walk from the meandering waters of Hodge Beck. The North York Moors National Park is much more than a series of stunning views and quaint villages. It is a living natural landscape teeming with wildlife and with a rich history and culture, along with amazing geological features. It’s a paradise for those interested in walking, cycling, horse riding and other country sports, all of which can be arranged for guests, aswell as nature tours and wildlife safaris. But it’s not all about the outdoors at Skiplam grange. From the Granary it’s less than a ten minute drive to the elegant market town of Helmsley; and the stunning East Yorkshire Coast and historic city of York are within easy reach.

Complete with it’s own castle, Helmsley boasts an arts centre offering theatre, cinema, and other delights for culture vultures, and there are a wealth of stylish shops and food emporiums, plus Duncombe Park Stately home, along with its beautiful Walled Gardens and Bird of Prey Centre. Foodies can take tea Betty’s style at The Black Swan Hotel, while Pampering is on the menu at Verbena Spa in the Feversham Arms. Further afield there are Michelin starred restaurants for dinner, and that’s before you even think about York or the east coast.

There is simply no shortage of things to do and see in Ryedale, and the Granary is a perfect base for a holiday or short break in this stunning area of Yorkshire. It is convenient for everything yet retains rural charm by being just outside the hustle and bustle, but close enough to enjoy it; to sample it; to take it or leave it. Skiplam is a hamlet with few houses and little traffic, and one of the great indulgencies of a stay at the Granary is in just being. So kick back, relax and enjoy... and let me tell you a little more…

The site of Skiplam Grange is steeped in history. Detailed farming records date back to the 12th century and the Grange is listed with English Heritage on account of it’s archeological remains and historic interest. The moors and woodlands of this ancient place have a magic of their own. Here, I feel alive and close to the source, and I hope that if you come and stay at Skiplam Grange you too will connect with its ancient heritage, and be captivated both by its beauty and its vibrant energy.

Adjacent to the Granary and surrounded by pasture are the Jolly Good Gallop stables; and free ranging around the former farmyard is a modest smallholding of rare breeds, some of them literally on the doorstep. The Granary sits comfortably amongst this plethora of country life, offering the archetypal rural experience.

Accommodation at the Granary is little short of luxurious and the quality of the re-development and furnishings ensures a confident level of comfort. Choose from the king sized master bedroom with ensuite shower room, or the luxury twin bedroom with private bathroom. Needless to say both bedrooms are equipped with feather and down bedding, quality linens and towels, and kept toasty throughout thanks to a combination of underfloor and central heating. A large upstairs landing is the perfect place to read and relax and with quality carpets underfoot and complimentary toiletries from Neals Yard Organic throughout, it all adds up to a wonderfully indulgent home from home.

The generously sized dining kitchen is well equipped with crockery, cutlery, utensils and appliances, and there is a utility room with washing machine, tumble dryer, ironing facilities and microwave. Views across to Fadmoor from the garden terrace make for perfect alfresco dining if the Yorkshire sunshine tempts, or sit out the front to watch the rural world go by.

In a room on the ground floor is my modest yoga studio where yoga classes, satsangs and workshops take place during the week. Upstairs is a therapy room where a range of therapies including massage, reflexology, private yoga instruction and nutritional advice can all be arranged at your convenience if you wish.

I'm all about being bespoke and personalised. So if you want to arrange camping (or Glamping which is my preference) in the grounds, park up your touring caravan or camper, book a Granary room for B&B, book the whole Granary for self catering, arrange a spa type break or come along and stay for a riding holiday with your horse, get in touch. There's no time like the present!

My Gorgeous Granary is ideally placed for a romantic and secluded get away from it all, but because it is less than 10 minutes from the treasure trove of Helmsley, sits on the edge of the National Park, and is an equestrian property, it lends itself to a variety of holiday styles and suits go do types aswell as those seeking something more relaxing. The multifarious sights, shops and activities give the opportunity to tailor your break into something truly personalised. Go on... indulge!

WoW..... What a Find!

We were so lucky to find the Gorgeous Granary at last minute and had a fantastic 2 night break.

Gillian was great from my initial booking enquiry and the welcome hamper on arrival was a lovely touch.

The property is immaculate and has everything you need - it really is home from home.

The animals and views make it extra special.

We will definitely return back.

Owner's Response: Thank you! I try and be accommodating of late bookings if at all possible because I am on site so can be flexible. I make up the hampers with local produce as far as possible, and eggs are freshly laid by my glorious hens! You were both very welcome, come back anytime.

What a find!!

One of the nicest places we have stayed in. No...the best place we have stayed in!! Very clean and well maintained. Owner added lovely touches with a lovely welcome pack with local produce and toiletries in all the bathrooms. Beds very comfortable.

Lovely barn conversion. Comfortable, spacious.

Remote country retreat. Glorious walks from the converted barn. Numerous good pub lunches nearby, the Crown at Hutton and Blacksmiths at Lastingham good. Walked down Tabular Hills path to the Friday market at Helmsley, lots of good café/pubs there, and interesting walled garden. Lovely walk up to Rievaulx which is stunning. Sutton Bank walk along the scarp lovely in the evening. Castel Howard nearby and deserves a full day, the tours of the grounds/arboretum a highlight. Day out to Whitby fun too, via car or steam train from Pickering. Friendly goat, geese, dogs, horses, and sheep, all on hand to welcome us back to the Grange each day.

Lovely property, fabulous location, perfect for horse riding, walking, cycling

We took our horses to stay and had a great time, location is perfect as bridleways from the door and access to so much off road riding. Enjoyed walking and riding and the area is so quiet, you can be out all day and hardly see anybody! The horses were very happy and right outside the door so perfect for us. We would highly recommend with or without horses!

Beautiful cottage - just wish it had a living room!

Stayed for 2 nights with our 6 week old son as our first 'family trip away'. We were able to check in early which was very kind, and the welcome hamper along with the finish of the whole place really made you feel so welcome. In terms of the little details and the thought the owner had gone through, this really was one of the nicest cottages we have stayed in.

However, what we hadn't realised is that whilst there is a sofa in the kitchen/ diner, and a space on the landing where you can spend some family time - there is not a 'living room' you can access. It appears as though what used to be the living room has been given over to a yoga studio which you can't access. This is a tease, because you can see that it's a wonderful space complete with wood burner, and it would be lovely to relax in there!

Therefore whilst we had a fantastic time here, we would only return if there was access to the living room.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your review Alan, the listing has been changed now but at the time of your booking it did state that there was only an upstairs seating area. Originally The Granary was advertised for B&B only so the downstairs sitting room was not necessary because The Granary has the kitchen/diner and the upstairs seating area. However, I have found that most guests prefer self catering, and we aim to please so we have now furnished the downstairs sitting room as part of The Granary accommodation and moved the studio out. There will also be a third bedroom becoming available for August 2017.

Skiplam Grange lies on the edge of the North York Moors National Park, looking down towards Skiplam Woods, and is a five minute walk from the meandering waters of Hodge Beck where we enjoy fishing throughout the summer. Situated in the middle of an extensive network of bridle paths, the horse riding is simply stunning with miles of off road riding and views to die for. We keep several horses at Skiplam Grange and holiday liveries are very welcome so please enquire if you're interested. Accompanied rides can be arranged around some of the most beautiful routes in the immediate vicinity and further afield.

However, the North York Moors National Park is much more than a series of stunning views and quaint villages. It is a living natural landscape teeming with wildlife and with a rich history and culture, along with amazing geological features. Yes, it's a paradise for those interested in outdoor pursuits, most of which can be arranged for guests, but it's also a location to discover nature and explore the natural world. The nearby Dalby Forest is a great place to start with events all year round and we are also able to arrange nature tours and wildlife safaris. Even so, it’s not just about the outdoors at Skiplam Grange. From the Granary it’s less than a ten minute drive to the elegant market town of Helmsley; and the stunning East Yorkshire Coast and historic city of York are within easy reach.

Complete with it’s own castle, Helmsley boasts an arts centre offering theatre, cinema, and other delights for culture vultures, and there are a wealth of stylish shops and food emporiums, plus Duncombe Park Stately home, along with its beautiful Walled Gardens and Bird of Prey Centre. There is the impressive Ampleforth Abbey and Rievaulx ruins; and I could go on... All of that is before you even think about venturing into York or exploring the east coast. Closer to home there are the charming market towns of Kirkbymoorside, Pickering (with the North York Moors Steam railway of Harry Potter fame) and Malton.

There is simply no shortage of things to do and see in Ryedale, and the Granary is a perfect base for a holiday or short break in this glorious area of Yorkshire. It is convenient for everything yet retains rural charm by being just outside the hustle and bustle, but close enough to enjoy it; to sample it; to take it or leave it. Skiplam is a hamlet with few houses and little traffic, and one of the great indulgencies of a stay at the Granary is in just being.

As an incomer of 18 years plus to this area I can personally vouch for the rich tapestry of it's culture, history and wildlife. It truly is glorious, and the rural setting of the Granary offers peace, tranquility and rejuvenation for the weary, yet is literally minutes away from a host of must-see, must-do activities. But don't take my word for it, come see and experience it for yourself!
