Enjoy carefree summer fun in a bright and cozy cottage. Located in the tranquil, family-friendly village of Saltaire, two blocks from the ocean and half a block from the bay. The cottage is a sixties gem, designed, built and owned by a European architect, and features a spectacular, double-height “great room” that floods with early morning light! Not recommended for children under 4 y.o.
July and August only.
Saltaire is best for families. No cars, so your grade-schooler can go from home to day camp to a buddy's house to the beach, etc. all by bicycle. Really an ideal setting for families with children between 4 and 14 years of age.
Saltaire features a large grassy ball field/playground/basketball court complex right in the center of the village which is unique in the area and reflects the town's orientation to families with kids. On weekday mornings, the ball field hosts a day camp, another unique feature which will help your kid find activities and buddies. (Day camp requires an immunization record and simple doctor's letter -- see www.saltaire.org.) And then of course there is the spectacular ocean beach, a two-minute bicycle ride from our cottage.
Absolutely no group rentals please.
We have rented on Fire Island every year for six years now and this was our best experience yet. The design of the house could not be more perfect. The bedrooms are cool and cozy and the common space is private and beautifully lit. The garden is full of flowers and little fruit bearing trees which make the yard feel like a little Eden among tall reeds. The outdoor shower is spacious and well placed. The bicycles are in good working condition, as are the rest of the amenities in the house. Unlike some of the other houses we've rented on the island, my husband and I loved that this seemed to be a house that someone actually cared for. The icing on the cake for us was the wonderful collection of books, not a single trashy novel among them, which are neatly arranged on shelves in almost every single room. One could just spend a week revisiting 19th century poetry in this house, or brushing up on one's philosophy or modernist fiction. It's the perfect setting for both relaxation and inspiration. Another bonus: The owner is helpful and charming.
Other Activities: Softball, Basketball, Beach Volleyball, Kayaking, Windsurfing
