A little further afield is the north east coast with its quaint fishing villages and Whitby where popular Whitby Abbey stands majestically on the headland above the traditional working harbour. For the energetic there is good surfing at Saltburn. The North York Moors and Heartbeat country provide stunning scenery and are wonderful for touring. Shops and pub 2&frac12; miles..
