In 2008 the National Trust for Historic Preservation named Apalachicola as a Distinctive Destination-Architecture, beautiful antebellum homes, a true working waterfront are some of the reasons for this award. Only 8 miles away, Apalachicola is a great day trip-only 2 other Florida cities share this honor, Key West and Fernandina Beach. Shopping, eating, and touring the historic district of old Florida.
Visit the State Park on St George for fishing, shelling, and picnics.
Sandpiper Cottage was built in the early 1970s by 2 brothers to share with their growing families.
The door frame to the laundry room has the names, dates, and heights of all of their children. When we purchased Sandpiper our children's info was also added, along with a few of our 4-legged family members. Their family continues to travel to St. George Island and we are honored that they still stay in Sandpiper when they visit.
Our family purchased Sandpiper Cottage in 2001, we have had fun making Sandpiper Cottage our own.
The pool and landscape was the first large project we tackled.
When we purchased the cottage, I could not wait for the day I could change the outside color from
that 'crazy pink' to a more subdued color. However, that day came in 2008 and we just could not make ourselves change the color, in fact, we chose a color called Caribbean Coral-we always tell folks to look for the pink house with a green roof on East 5th!
We consider Sandpiper Cottage a true Florida cottage. But don't let the age fool you, all of the systems have been replaced, along with
new duct work, flooring, furniture(inside & out), and of course paint.
Lynn Johnson purchased this house in 2001
Growing up on the Georgia coast a beach town was not a place with resorts and high rise condos. It was a place where you could hop on your bike and not worry about traffic. We spent many years exploring coastal towns from Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, Alabama, and even California. Our current home is in the Metro Atlanta area and we were looking for a quiet place to get away. The late Celestine Sibley, a long time writer for the Atlanta Journal Constitution, on occasion would write of her travels to her 2nd home on Dog Island Florida in the Gulf of Mexico. Her writings intrigued us and that is how we found The Forgotten Coast. Finally a place to getaway, to leave your worries behind, and at one time, a place where our cell phones could not get a signal.
How great was that!
Sandpiper Cottage is on a corner lot, it is positioned across from a beach right of way that cannot be built upon.
You walk out your door, cross the street and you are on the dune walkover. There is not a home to our right, left, or behind Sandpiper. The island bike path conveniently crosses the rear of our property-it is great for walking pets, early morning runs, and of course sight seeing on your bike. Bicycle, golf carts are available to rent in numerous locations on the SGI.
If you get a chance, during your visit, check out the sunsets on the west end of the island, on the bay side.
Great times at Sandpiper Cottage! It worked out great to have our now - mobile one-year-old with s, and feeling safe with him here on one level. Weather was great for January-60s and 70s everyday.
Make sure to check out Wakulla Springs State Park-awesome boat ride(we did it twice!) to see lots of birds, manatees, & alligators. Great time.
Apalachicola is fun, friendly, and charming-everyone here on SGI was so nice too.
Thanks for a wonderful place to stay and play!

It was love at first sight! We were tired of the 'plastic' condo vacations and were looking for something cozy and comfortable. Lynn and David has provided such a wonderfully relaxing cottage and gave it a bit of a playful atmosphere of peach colored siding, butterfly bushes, pool (woot!), and even a whimsical beach hat collection. Our grandson loved being able to bring the dog along and still talks about our time there, that's priceless. Shortly after we returned home we booked it for the next years trip. This is one of those special places you make memories of with your family and fill up the scrapbook with the pictures, year after year.
We spent a month here and first time on SGI which was very nice and quiet. The cottage has everything you need for a nice visit especially if you cook .Updated recently and beds are comfortable and excellent furnishings.
Nice enclosed deck for our dog to enjoy out in the sun and she loved the beach across the street.
Book it you can't go wrong and owners are very friendly also.If we get to SGI again this is where we will stay.
Great seafood all over had plenty.
All that needs to be said about Sandpiper Cottage is location, location, location and a few other things. Right across from the beach entrance and walking distance to town. A pool to jump into after a day at the beach. Absolutely beautiful landscaping which makes this home very private. All this and SGI too. A wonderful vacation spot. We plan to return. Thanks.
This was our first family vacation in about 15 years and just what we were looking for. We were able to take our fur-baby, Bella, and she equally enjoyed the trip. Sandpiper is a homey little cottage and we were honored to stay there. I didn't do any cooking, but the kitchen was well stocked with pot, pans & utensils. Guess I shoulda cooked a little, but I cook every day at home and just took a break. The beds were comfortable considering we are used to the adjustable Sleep Number beds. The only suggestions I would have would be better shower heads, sometimes felt like I needed to run around to get good and wet and possibly a more comfortable seating arrangement. After my husband's four hip replacements, the lower seating of the couch and chairs didn't work real well for him.
The landscaping is beautiful, with butterflies and hummingbirds. The sun porch was really nice, we left the windows open most of the time unless it rained and it was fairly comfortable even during the day. I would love to have some of the bushes in my yard. The pool was really nice, we didn't get to spend a lot of time at the pool or beach because it rained our first two days, and also my daughter and I burn easily so mostly we just relaxed.
St. George Island is great for down time and the food was great. A couple of pet-friendly restaurants on the Island and several in Apalachicola. Highly recommend Sandpiper, Lynn was a pleasure to work with. She gave me several suggestions for things to do and places to eat. Hope to be back next year.
This was our second stay at Sandpiper, the first being back in 2003. Very comfortable, easy ground level access and a great location just across from the beach. We love the area and all the fabulous bars and restaurants, both on the island and in Apalachicola. Really enjoyed the pool, being from MN it was wonderful to be outside again in shorts if only for a week. Our only issues - and they are minor issues - the showers are both pretty small, and the TVs appear to be the same ones that were there in 2003 (our week was during the NCAA tournament - otherwise we might not have even noticed...). Next time we visit with a smaller group we will be going back to Sandpiper.
We absolutely loved Sandpiper! It was extremely well located and very comfortable. We especially enjoyed the short walk to the beach and the swimming pool! Allowing our pet was the icing on the cake. We had six adults and one toddler in our party and we had plenty of space. The long bar in the kitchen was great! Our vacation was just amazing and we will certainly be back at Sandpiper!!
