We'll be back again!

  • 5 of 5

We cannot adequately express how wonderful our stay was at this beautiful property. The carriage house is so thoughtfully and thoroughly appointed, not only in amenities(every creature comfort has been thought of!) but also in the gorgeous, cozy decor. We come to Acadia to spend our time in the outdoors, but the carriage house was a splendid, serene and very inviting retreat at the end of a long day of hiking/biking.

We have been coming to Acadia for a number of years now, but this is our first stay at the Artist's Retreat, and we will look no further when we book our future stays in SW Harbor. The owners Cyd and Ken are such gracious and generous hosts, and doing business with them was a joy(prompt email replies and excellent communication). We love staying on the quiet side of the island, so the location of the property was perfect for us(an excellent "jumping-off" point from the park and all of its trails).

We had a terrific experience staying here, and we recommend it highly. Many thanks again, Cyd and Ken!

Charming get-away, thoughtfully appointed

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed staying here very much and hope to return. The owners have been in the hospitality business for awhile and thought of everything.

The listing is accurate and the property was clean and well-maintained. When we arrived my husband said "We hit it out of the ballpark" in selecting this property. We found it very cozy and appealing.

Our older dog appreciated the nearby wooded paths. We all appreciated being in a private, wooded environment. On chilly days, it was delightful to use the gas-burning heating stove.

We enjoyed the paths and trails of Acadia. Highlights included: nature cruise of Frenchman's Bay (saw seal pups!) , Astiou Azalea Gardens, and meeting craftsman Richard Fisher of US Bells.

I would recommend this property to a friend or relative without reservation. We hope to return ourselves.

Such a wonderful place

  • 5 of 5

This cottage was everything that is stated in the description, but more... Totally self contained requiring little more than food. The location in the woods is secluded enough to be peaceful yet easy to access the roads and local areas.

I used this as a "jumping off" spot for my week of hiking in Acadia and points north. Central to everything Acadia. Highly recommended to everyone. I thank Cyd and Ken for sharing their property with me, and hope to be back in 2016.

An Oasis on Mt. Desert Isalnd

  • 5 of 5

Driving in from New Hampshire you relax as you cross over to Mt. Desert Island. Turning off the main road to southwest Harbor you pass a stand of fir trees. Then you see the sign for Bear’s Cottage in a cleaning; it stands with the Artist’s Retreat Carriage House.

Up the stairs you find it, an oasis of wood, windows and paint. You first note its beauty and then the immaculate condition in which it is kept.

We are thankful to Cyd and Ken for letting us rent the Artist’s Retreat for a week.

The space is stocked with everything that you need. It is the perfect enhancement to Acadia National Park and Mt. Desert Island. We concur with the other reviews that this is among the best lodgings that we have had. We are confident that future renters will be a pleased as we have been.

Specifically, the listing description is accurate. The property was in exceptional condition. The owners were most helpful and friendly without being intrusive.

We enjoyed restaurants (Fathoms, Burning Tree, Sips, Thurstons, Beals) and the National Park (Wonderwall, Schoodic Peninsula, the Carriage Roads). IT was a long drive from Philadelphia but well worth it.

The Perfect Summer Retreat

  • 5 of 5

From the moment we were greeted by our gracious hosts Cyd and Ken we could not have felt more at home. Everything we had read about the Carriage House prior to our arrival proved to be spot on. In fact, it exceeded our expectations. Comfortable, well equipped, clean and well maintained, quiet and private are just some of the adjectives that describe the Carriage House. Our hosts were always eager to answer questions, provide recommendations, and offer assistance yet always respected our privacy. We had our cocker spaniel with us and she also loved the spacious yard, especially sitting by the chimenea with a fire while we enjoyed wine after a full day. It is a fabulous location close to Southwest Harbor but far enough away to feel like a relaxing retreat. We can't wait to return and would recommend it without reservation.

Lovely base for exploring Acadia

  • 5 of 5

The Artist's Retreat is an ideal base for a couple to explore Acadia. The carriage house is small, but comfortable and well maintained. The owners provide great information and support as needed, but are very respectful of their guests privacy.

The photos and overall presentation of the carriage house on the website are quite accurate. The living area is small but comfortable, with a couple nice sofas. It opens into a well equipped kitchen with a small table for dining. The bedroom is a nice size, and there is enough closet space. The carriage house sits within an open space in pine woods, and there is an outdoor seating area good for reading or just enjoying the peace and quiet.

The property is situated a bit far from the town of Southwest Harbor. It is possible to walk into town without going on the main highway (Maine 102), but it's more a hike than a stroll, and takes about 30 minutes. So any shopping and restaurant visits are best done by car.

This is a beautiful place in perfect condition and I highly recommend it as a base for exploring Acadia.
