Norfolk Estate Rental Photos and Description

2 bedrooms in Main House, and 4 bedrooms in 3 other cottages with bathrooms

“Birchfield,” in Norfolk, CT, sits at the foothills of the Berkshires amidst a vast forest preserve in northern Litchfield County. Birchfield’s cottages have a fun, retro atmosphere and if you and your family and friends long for the summer camp feel of “Moonrise Kingdom” you will love Birchfield.

With a private beach on a quiet, pristine lake a short walk away through a flower-filled field, this is the place for pancake breakfasts, midnight stories, a glass of wine with good friends and a nod to a simpler and more relaxed time. This is the place you will really get away from it all!

Birchfield’s main house and separate sleeping cottages have beds for 8-12 people – ideal for family holidays or couples' retreats. Birchfield has its own private beach with raft and canoe and there are numerous hiking and biking trails all around the property. No summer is complete without the annual cannon ball diving contest into the lake!

The Main House (once a Game Keeper’s Cottage) sleeps 3 people and includes a living room with wood burning fireplace; dining room with original hand painted murals and a large, farm-style kitchen with modern appliances. With 2 bedrooms (1 double, 1 single), the main house also has 1 bathroom with a claw-foot tub, a half-bath, a shower room, washer and dryer, and a large furnished screened-in front porch overlooking the field.

The three separate cottages each have their own half-baths. The Studio and Cellary each have a double bed, and the Flippery has 3 singles and a bunk-bed – ideal for kids.

The historic and beautiful town of Norfolk, a 5 minute drive away, is a scenic New England hamlet with a central village green, historic building, antique and gift shops, and the famous town library. Norfolk is also the home of the Yale Summer Music School's Chamber Music Festival held in July and August (including the farewell performance of the Tokyo String Quartet) as well as Infinity Hall, which boasts some of the coolest musical acts around (up-coming musical guests include the Psychedelic Furs, Marcia Ball, Buffy Sainte-Marie, Buckwheat Zydeco, Little Wolf and Dave Mason just to name a few).

Birchfield is a 2.5 hour drive from New York City and Boston, 30 minutes from Great Barrington and 45 minutes from Tanglewood, Kripalu, Jacobs Pillow and Canyon Ranch. It is a great location for exploring everything the Berkshires has to offer.

Perfect family

I was looking for my review and it seems to have disappeared, here it is again, sorry for the delay!

My husband and I celebrated our tenth wedding anniversary here last summer. We rented the place for 10 days, and had various friends come up for a few days at a time. Our friends (mostly 30's, some little kids, from NYC and Boston) unanimously loved this location. You really feel like you have been welcomed into an extended New England family's warm, lived in, summer cottage. The history just oozes from this place, and the decor, books, games and tchotchkes really make this unique and special (especially the kids room, we though the single beds would be a deal breaker, but people were fighting to stay in there!).

We spent the week hiking on easy NE rainforest trails, swimming in the pond, canoeing at sunset, cooking big family meals, playing manhunt on the grounds and charades by the fire. It was perfectly idyllic. We really look forward to coming again. Thank you!

what a wonderful retreat.Set in the woods of norfolk this rustic and charming estate offers a main home with a wonderful screened in porch. Three other buildings provide extra room for guests or a place the kids can have to themselves. Hiking trails are near by and the beach is a two minute walk from the house. There are restaurants and entertainment near by in the towns of Norfolk and Winsted. WE loved this place!

A slice of Heaven

  • 5 of 5

I am the type of person who goes on vacation to escape the ordinary hectic pace of life. Sitting on the screened in porch, with a cool breeze, great natural view with a good book, sipping a cup of tea suites me. Walks on scenic trails, swimming and kayaking around the pristine large pond, are as good as life gets. My daughter loves to hang out and swim from the dock. I also enjoy cooking and the kitchen is well equipped. Good library and quaint historical museum down the road. A few larger towns in close proximity for shopping, groceries and movies. Always clean and with everything in working order. I would recommend this jewel of a spot to any friend.

A great escape

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I spent the weekend with friends at the summer cottages. We rented the whole property. It was idyllic. The cottages were clean, tastefully decorated with antique furnishing and extremely comfortable. We felt like we really got away from everything. We enjoyed making meals together in the main house. The kitchen was well equipped and conducive to cooking. We had great fun lounging together with our friends in the comfortable surroundings both indoors and outdoors. It's difficult to find the right words to describe the private lake because it was so beautiful. We swam in it daily. The landscape was truly magnificent and well maintained. The owners were so gracious and available. We had a wonderful vacation in this rustic setting and would definitely recommend it to others.

Charming retreat

  • 5 of 5

My family has many happy memories of our summer stays at this lovely retreat. It is especially nice for children, with all the darling cottages and the lake a short walk away. There is a real clawfoot tub, bathrooms in all the cottages, and a working fireplace for chilly nights. It is located in one of the most beautiful settings in Connecticut.

6/08 "The place is wonderful. Everyone loved location...The week did become rather more interesting due to a series of thunderstorms. Power went out Sunday afternoon....The Jessups are great hosts, and I thank them for their kindness in checking up on us after the storms. I had a great time."

8/08 "Thank you for making this a wonderful stay for my family and me. We all enjoyed canoeing in Tobey and swimming in it as well. The walks were lovely..and just sitting out on the lawn with the sun streaming down on you along with hearing the many wildlife sounds was so peaceful. Thanks so much for sharing your family cottage with us."
