About Denise

My husband Phil and I have known each other since we were in grade school and dated since we were in Junior High School. We grew up in the area and spend most of our summers as children, teens and then adults at the beach!

Denise purchased this cottage in 2007

Why Denise chose Muskegon

The moment we stepped foot on the property, we knew we were 'home' and had to buy it!! We purchased the cottage originally with the plan of making it our retirement home. After major renovations of the cottage, we decided to make it a vacation rental (seeing I wasn't ready to retire). We researched names for the cottage and decided on SANKOFA which is a word from Ghana meaning 'we must go back to our past; to recreate our future...'

What makes this cottage unique

It is not just the view of Lake Michigan or the fact that the beach is 'right there' that makes Cottage Sankofa special...or the fact that it is one of the only cottage rentals at Pere Marquette Beach that has the beach view out front and wooded dunes as the back yard with walking trails...or the fact viewing deer on the property is a daily sighting...it is the Cottage itself that makes your visit special-we hope you enjoy all of our 'extra touches' as much as other guests! We love sharing the magic of Sankofa!!

Guestbook comments from the manager

Katie-My sisters, neice and I have all just returned from beautiful Sankofa in Muskegon where we all grew up and re-united again after 24 years. The place was so serene and beautiful. Thank you Denise for providing this simple cottage to anyone that would be priviledged to stay there. We had a wonderful time and so enjoyed our little "deer" friend, Dockers, Farmer's Market, the forest and of course beautiful Lake Michigan. We can't wait to come back.

Denise Donnelly Hernandez - Sankofa was the best choice my sisters and my daughter made together for our trip "back home". everything was perfect!denise could'nt have been more gracious.we will with out a doubt make Sankofa part of each and every summer journey to our home town

The dying art of "cottaging" well preserved!

  • 5 of 5

We LOVED Sankofa. This little gem exudes charm and nostalgia while being updated in just the right places. It's not easy to find a cozy spot for two, so I'm grateful that it fell into the right hands and wasn't bulldozed and replaced by a beige vinyl-sided residence that can sleep 14. The location is the perfect intersection of easy beach access and seclusion. The furnishings are just right for the space, the beds comfortable; those wood floors - gorgeous! Water quality and water pressure were good. I mention that because I've experienced a little funkiness in other places. And no musty smells that you sometimes get with cottages. Loved the outdoor spaces too. It was lovely, peaceful and blessedly quiet. The neighboring properties weren't too close and no partying yahoos nearby. Only negative was on arrival, there was no lockbox, no blue door and no keys on the table, so after driving for 7 hrs., the first half hour there was a little concerning. Denise, herself, was out of the country and the contact info for the local property manager was inside the cottage. I would definitely update the check-in instructions. And there didn't seem to be any way of disposing of recyclables.

But we would definitely like to return. Can we call dibs on the 2018 booking season? :)

Owner's Response: Jennifer-thank you for your wonderful review...you certainly have a beautiful way of expressing yourself! I am thrilled that you loved the cottage and enjoyed your stay. Oh my gosh, I totally forgot to change the information since we painted (thus no blue door)! I will do it right now. Whew, glad you figured it out:). Looking forward to meeting you when you come for your next stay.

Perfect cottage for our family vacation!

  • 5 of 5

Cottage Sankofa worked out great for our family! My husband & I along with our 2 kids (almost 5 and 10 months) headed to Muskegon for a nice family vacation. It was an easy walk to the beach (just down the driveway and across the street), and we even found a wagon in the basement which allowed us to haul our stuff more easily. The beach was beautiful....great sand and perfect water, and there was an a playground for the kids! We also enjoyed walking to the lighthouses, and down to the harbor. There were great views, and it is very peaceful. Every day we were at the cottage, we also saw plenty of deer! It was so awesome to see...my daughter was the first one to see them!

There is a Meijer and a Walmart just a couple of miles away; this worked out great as we ate most of our meals at the cottage. This is a perfect little cottage for a small family who is looking to enjoy a nice vacation and be close to the beach.

Diamond!

  • 4 of 5

What a wonderful little cottage. Perfect for our family getaway.

This home is perfectly tucked away but still on the beach. We love the seclusion from the noise and traffice of the beach street, but could still see the lake from the front door. It was a joy to see the deer came right up to our back door.

Home had everything we needed. Loved the use of the beach towels and chairs. Beautiful kitchen!

Denise was a joy to work with, she made sure we had all we needed and that we were happy.

We will definitely be back again!

A perfect getaway

  • 5 of 5

This place is just what the doctor ordered for a vacation getaway. It has everything...close location to a world class beach...all the amenities for a relaxing stay (i.e. fire pit, gas grill, seclusion, DVDs, flat panel TV, stereo...it even had a set of binoculars). We found the cottage well maintained and clean on arrival. The kitchen has all newer appliances. My wife was a little disappointed by the fact that we believed the kitchen would contain a Keurig coffee maker (we brought the individualized cups), but it turned out the kitchen supplied a conventional coffee maker. Each bedroom has an individual window AC unit (which is a total necessity for the warm and humid nights). It's about a 200 yard walk to the sugar sand beaches of Pere-Marquette Park where a person can walk along sandy beaches for miles. My only criticisms would be that a stocked first aid kit needs to be supplied and the cable service (for the TV) is pretty lame (few channels). However the cottage is supplied with a wealth of games and DVD movies. If you enjoy cycling, you're going to love this place. You can take the lakeshore trail around Muskegon Lake to Muskegon State park and back (about 35 mile round trip) or make your way over to Musketawa Trail which can be ridden from Muskegon all the way to Grand rapids on a 12' wide paved pathway. The place has everything a vacationer could ask for...clean, efficient, close location to the beach, easy access to biking (or walking), miles of sandy beach, the list is virtually endless. We had a wonderful time with this rental. My wife and I have been renting vacation homes in the Muskegon area since 2011 and this one by far was the best we've rented. We give it a "two-thumbs-up" endorsement.

Owner's Response: Thank you for the wonderful review...and for leaving the cottage so tidy!! I am so glad you mentioned the first aide kit-we have one but I think it is in a cupboard, we will make it more visible for sure. Ah, the keurig machine-it broke and I need to take off listing. Thank you for reminding me. Enjoy the rest of your summer

Better for younger families

  • 3 of 5

Went with my folks who are older so it was too far for them to walk. It also had so overgrown in front of the cottage that we really didn't have a view of the lake as we'd hoped. I think the photos are outdated on here. We had some problems, but the owners came and fixed them. The cottage is set back in the woods, so if you are looking for something quiet, off the beaten path- this is your kind of place. I think we prefer something closer to the water though, more of a beachy feel to it. Wanted to watch the sun set from the cottage, which is impossible. Also, prefer a bedroom without a skylight so we can sleep in past sunrise and not hear the pitching of rain when it rains! This may be the perfect place for some, it just wasn't what we were looking for.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your input, as you mentioned in your review, the cottage is perfect for those wanting a private feel rather than right on the beach. The majority of of renters are looking for something away from the busy road (although not so busy in September). The cottage is perfect for those wanting the best of both worlds-views of the beach, long beach grass in the front and wildlife wooded area in the back. Of course, this may not be ideal, as you mentioned, for the elderly. Some of the most beautiful sunsets are at this beach...and there are a few months of the year that we are fortunate enough to see it from the cottage front door as photo shows.
