About Denise

My husband Phil and I have known each other since we were in grade school and dated since we were in Junior High School. We grew up in the area and spend most of our summers as children, teens and then adults at the beach!

Denise purchased this cottage in 2007

Why Denise chose Muskegon

The moment we stepped foot on the property, we knew we were 'home' and had to buy it!! We purchased the cottage originally with the plan of making it our retirement home. After major renovations of the cottage, we decided to make it a vacation rental (seeing I wasn't ready to retire). We researched names for the cottage and decided on SANKOFA which is a word from Ghana meaning 'we must go back to our past; to recreate our future...'

What makes this cottage unique

It is not just the view of Lake Michigan or the fact that the beach is 'right there' that makes Cottage Sankofa special...or the fact that it is one of the only cottage rentals at Pere Marquette Beach that has the beach view out front and wooded dunes as the back yard with walking trails...or the fact viewing deer on the property is a daily is the Cottage itself that makes your visit special-we hope you enjoy all of our 'extra touches' as much as other guests! We love sharing the magic of Sankofa!!

Guestbook comments from the manager

Katie-My sisters, neice and I have all just returned from beautiful Sankofa in Muskegon where we all grew up and re-united again after 24 years. The place was so serene and beautiful. Thank you Denise for providing this simple cottage to anyone that would be priviledged to stay there. We had a wonderful time and so enjoyed our little "deer" friend, Dockers, Farmer's Market, the forest and of course beautiful Lake Michigan. We can't wait to come back.

Denise Donnelly Hernandez - Sankofa was the best choice my sisters and my daughter made together for our trip "back home". everything was perfect!denise could'nt have been more gracious.we will with out a doubt make Sankofa part of each and every summer journey to our home town

I am in the Navy stationed in Washington state so we decided to vacation in my home town of Muskegon for Memorial weekend. My two children are older and we realized that this would be our last vacation before they started their own lives. We chose Cottage Sankofa because of the outstanding reviews. We were not disappointed!!

The front faces beautiful Lake Michigan and is better than any beach in California or Florida. Activities from biking on the beach, swimming and we even sailed on a replica ship from the 1800's. Then the back of the cottage is wooded with a nice little fire pit. The evenings we would build fires, make samores and play guitars. It is like having two distinct cottages for the price of one.

There are many activities near Muskegon. We climbed a lighthouse, went on dune rides, toures a WWII Submarine and spent a day at Michigan Adventure Park. I really wish we would have had more time to see everything. The whole family agrees that our experience at Sankofa was the best vacation ever!!!

Better for younger families

  • 3 of 5

Went with my folks who are older so it was too far for them to walk. It also had so overgrown in front of the cottage that we really didn't have a view of the lake as we'd hoped. I think the photos are outdated on here. We had some problems, but the owners came and fixed them. The cottage is set back in the woods, so if you are looking for something quiet, off the beaten path- this is your kind of place. I think we prefer something closer to the water though, more of a beachy feel to it. Wanted to watch the sun set from the cottage, which is impossible. Also, prefer a bedroom without a skylight so we can sleep in past sunrise and not hear the pitching of rain when it rains! This may be the perfect place for some, it just wasn't what we were looking for.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your input, as you mentioned in your review, the cottage is perfect for those wanting a private feel rather than right on the beach. The majority of of renters are looking for something away from the busy road (although not so busy in September). The cottage is perfect for those wanting the best of both worlds-views of the beach, long beach grass in the front and wildlife wooded area in the back. Of course, this may not be ideal, as you mentioned, for the elderly. Some of the most beautiful sunsets are at this beach...and there are a few months of the year that we are fortunate enough to see it from the cottage front door as photo shows.

Cottage Perfection

  • 5 of 5

If there were 6 stars, Cottage Sankofa would have gotten a 6 from our family! We couldn't have been happier with our stay. The cottage was absolutely perfect for us and our kids, and the pictures didn't even do it justice. All the linens and finishings were very nice quality, the rooms were nice, and the views were unbelievable. From the deer visiting us in our backyard to the sunshine reflecting on the Lake, we couldn't have asked for more. This rental set the bar for us to want the same experience when we come back next year. We love Muskegon and we loved Cottage Sankofa! Thank you for the memories!

Great place!

  • 5 of 5

Our family visited this cottage and thoroughly enjoyed it. We had a 3 y/o, 2 y/o, and a six month old and it accommodated us pretty well. The owner had a pack-n-play and high chair on site, which was convenient. Plus, the cottage was pretty kid-friendly (although, you'll want to make sure you bring some toys and entertainment).

The owner always responded very quickly to any emails or phone calls.

Pictures are very accurate. The inside has a great decor with updated countertops and appliances and nicely colored walls. Our only complaint was that there wasn't a ton of natural light. You get the best of both worlds here--you're very close to the beach (QUICK walk to the beach) but you're nestled in the woods, too. We saw plenty of deer, and even a wild turkey with nine baby turkeys (I'm sure they have a specific name). The backyard is so great--has some really cool topography and a nice fire pit (the owner provided us with a bundle of wood, which was great).

The only drawback for us was crossing the street to the beach. The street was sometimes busy and people weren't great about stopping to let us pass. And with our three kids that was kind of tough at times. Always manageable, though, just a bit cumbersome.

All in all, it was a great time. We loved it.

Serene & Beautiful

  • 5 of 5

I could not have been happier with this rental. The description and photographs online were very accurate. The home is quite clean and had everything we needed & more! The proximity to the beach was ideal and the beach itself was very nice and not overly-crowded.

The park-like back yard was great. We saw squirrels (black and brown), some wild turkeys and a doe with her fawns would come to visit at dusk and dawn. Toasting s'mores in the evening at the fire-pit was quite a treat.

Muskegon is quick trip from Silver Lake Dunes, Michigan's Adventure and Holland but has many things to do locally as well. We visited the LST-393 and USS Silversides; very interesting.

Denise was very pleasant to work with. If you rent, I doubt you'll be disappointed!
