About Gillian Laycock
We purchased the cottage as a bolt hole from the stress of work and came to realise how lovely the area is around. There is so much to do and even the Dark Peak area with its moorlands is a short drive away. We are new to this holiday letting site, but we know from past lettings that most people enjoy staying in the area and often return.
Why Gillian Laycock chose Wirksworth
Pretty relaxing garden, just the place to enjoy a good book, cup of tea or glass of wine, with the birds singing and hearing occasionally the gentle puffing of the steam trains in the valley.
What makes this Cottage unique
We fell in love with this little hamlet and its pretty stone cottages. The cottage has retained some of its original features, which adds to its charm.

Quaint, cosy home from home
Delightful, compact cottage in a superb location for explorers with the added bonus of a wrap around garden. We stayed in October and enjoyed evening by lamplight and open fire but have vowed to return summer time to rest and dine in the enclosed garden. We had everything we needed and found the wealth of maps and local information very handy and we used it every day. It was comfortable, warm, well equipped and the pantry items, foil, salt, vinegar and the like help such a lot if you cook meals 'at home' as we do and don't need to bring every conceivable item. The cottage is clean, neat and welcoming with, in our opinion fabulous views of chimney pots, gardens, wonderful old houses and fields. We visited the area for industrial heritage, walks, views, shopping with peace and comfort to come home to and we had it all in bags. With a small dog or child this would be a superb accommodation having the pretty, enclosed and gated garden. If I was really pressed to say what I missed from our own semi-rural home I would say 3 things: a bird table visible from the kitchen door onto the side garden, wall lights or a reading lamp in the main downstairs room (we borrowed a bedroom lamp to aid reading the paper and planning next day), and a cat. We did not even miss the internet, and we have an 11 year old!!
Sweet cottage in lovely area
Comfortable, cosy, warm and well equipped cottage in a lovely area on the edge of the Peak District with easy access to many great walks and interesting places.
Comfortable, characterful, well equipped cottage in lovely surroundings.
The cottage is very well presented and had absolutely everything we needed. The welcome pack and local information were much appreciated and the position provided us with an excellent base for walking and exploring the area. We slept well and ate well! The pretty garden was a secure space for our Westie, a 'sun-trap' and a lovely relaxing spot for early evening barbecues. We had no difficulty parking nearby and enjoyed being able to walk to Wirksworth and Cromford. Other highlights included the Monday market at Bakewell and historical rail trip. Highly recommended!
a Derbyshire retreat
Oxspring cottage is a lovely little cottage which is well-equipped and comfortable.
It is only a short walk to Wirksworth where there are things to do if country walking from the door is not your choice.
Very pretty and well located for walks.
Property was very well set up with all the things provided for. All the directions for using the amenities was clearly provided.
Lovely little cottage
A really lovely place to stay while doing some walking. Had everything we needed and a few extras too such as a pint of milk, dog treats and chocolate. The garden is beautiful, a nice place to sit and relax after some serious hills! The double bed is exceptionally comfy. A very enjoyable stay.
