About Jim Baldwin

I'm a copywriter, editor, book consultant, a songwriter and a musician. I love being in Vermont. I write some of my best stuff here.

Jim Baldwin purchased this cottage in 1983

Why Jim Baldwin chose Mount Snow Area

I grew up in the area and still have family and many friends in Vermont. When the possibility arose of having a home here, it just seemed like the right thing.

What makes this cottage unique

Whenever someone says to me, 'Imagine that you are in your special spot, a place where you feel safe and comfortable, and where you feel a profound sense of belonging,' I think of the deck of this cottage. The peace that comes from staying here lasts me for weeks.

Great place to relax and forget about the rest of the world

  • 5 of 5

My friend and I stayed while attending a teacher's conference in Brattleboro. We became the envy of those staying in hotels. So nice to get back to the house and have a glass of wine on the deck while discussing what we learned that day or just relaxing and enjoying the silence and view.

Intend of going back to truly relax.

Owner's Response: Thanks, Viviana! I love the envy bit, and I'm so glad you enjoyed the serenity of the deck. I hope you will indeed return for some total relaxation!

A slice of heaven in Vermont

  • 5 of 5

What an amazing experience. I was looking for technology detox and to relax after the first four months of middle school teaching and I got even more than I expected. The owner was such a pleasure to deal with and the accommodations were cozy and inviting. The house is set away in the woods, but with an amazing backyard view of the mountains. It is very accessible to all the necessities - homemade food, hiking trails, and clean air. The house had two woodburning stoves - one in the dowsnstairs bedroom, and one upstairs in the living area. I loved the loft bed and the skylight windows that either showed off the amazing night sky or got snow covered after a typical Vermont storm. The driveway was plowed for us without having to make a call and the highways are always cleared. Take advantage of all the surrounding towns with the antique stores, homemade pies, and the snowshoeing trails. I highly recommend this property to anyone looking to just get away!

Exactly as adverized. Great cabin.

  • 5 of 5

We loved the cabin and enjoyed the surrounding area. Nature cooperated and we got to see the leaves change to fall colors, beautiful.

A wonderful property, even better in person!

  • 5 of 5

This stay was everything my friend and I were hoping for - the wood stoves are easy to navigate and perfectly heat the space. The yard is beautifully landscaped with a beautiful mountain view. And that deck!! Definitely hope to be back again someday.

Extra costs (cleaning and required insurance) made it more expensive than it was worth

  • 3 of 5

We rented the house as we were visiting family and the location was perfect. It's a nice house, but very plain with no real amenities (no tv in the living space, only one small tv in the downstairs bedroom but no cable or other service, only tiny soaps provided). All we did was sleep there so not a huge issue for us but others should be aware. We also rented the house because it seemed affordable, however there were several extra fees (cleaning, property damage and service) that added over $150. The mattresses were very soft so beware if you need one that's firm. It's VT so I know there are cobwebs, but after paying a cleaning fee I was surprised by how many there were inside. The yard and upper deck are gorgeous, and it is very peaceful and quiet just would've liked a few more creature comforts.

Owner's Response: Hi Elizabeth. Glad you loved the deck, the view, and the peace and quiet. I'm sorry that not everything was to your satisfaction. First off, there is cable, provided by Southern Vermont Cable, and I've never had anyone have trouble with that. If it wasn't working properly, I wish you had contacted me to let me know. I can usually address problems of that sort very quickly. The mattress in the master bedroom has a foam topper on it, placed there to make the bed softer. Not everyone likes a soft mattress, and I suppose you could have removed the topper for greater comfort. I'm sorry it wasn't to your liking. Many guests have commented that they like the spare decor, without knick-knacks everywhere. I believe the amenities are suited to a Vermont country cottage. But those things are a matter of taste, I realize. Thanks for the note about the cobwebs. It is Vermont, and the ceilings are 17 feet high in places. It can be difficult for my housekeeper to reach them. I'll tell her to be on the lookout. Finally, the property damage and service fees are through VRBO, not me. Tax is required by the state, and again, I collect it, but I don't keep it. All of those would have applied to any Vermont property you'd rented through their system. I never see any of those funds. The cleaning fee of $50 is modest, I think, given the 3-story property. I understand that in combination with the VRBO and state fees, you were unhappy. I hope your visit to the state was, by and large, a happy one. Jim

Beautiful house at a gorgeous location.

  • 4 of 5

We had a wonderful stay. Very close to Brattleboro and our family reunion. House is clean and well stocked. Very comfortable. Mattresses are worn, but not uncomfortable. Definitely a plus to have laundry facilities. Jim was very helpful with updates and a great wealth of information on the house and the area. We would absolutely recommend this house!
