Dar Daheb is rented as whole. It is a traditionnal house built around a furnished patio. It has been renovated recently with some of Fez's best craftsmen and handmade materials, with carved plaster and wood, handcut tiles, ironwork. Downstairs are the dining room, the kitchen, a bathroom and a delightful Moroccan sitting room with a single bed on a mezzanine. Upstairs two large bedrooms share a bathroom. One has a double bed and a sitting area, the other one has a double and a single. From the lovely, shady roof terrace there are stunning views over most of the medina. Delicious "fassi" meals are available on order.
I am a French artist who lived many tears in Africa and the Pacific and am now settled in the South of Spain. Many years ago I fell in love with Fez and later on decided to purchase a house there to be able to spend more time there and to share with other people a little corner of this amazing city.
Dominique Martin purchased this house in 2007
The minute I saw this house I knew it had to be mine because it was the one with the most light I had visited, "a house with a smile", when houses in Fez are often dark because thay are turned inwards. The area also appealed to me because it was not touristic although close to the historial center. People there were locals who went about their dayly business and we soon came to know most of the neighbours. But what really made me chose it was its stunning terrace with uninterrupted views over most of the "medina" and yet with some very private corner where to hide from surrounding neighbours.
Quiet and yet , close to R'Cif, the local market, shops, banks and craftsmen's workshops. It is only a few minutes away from the Kerawyine Mosque, the tanneries and the Andalous quarter. It has easy access to taxis and buses and there is guarded parking within 5 minutes walk.
We enjoyed our stay in this comfortable house in the heart of the Medina. Communication with the owner was easy and quick. Our host Rachid was available even considering our late arrival and helped us park the car during our stay and guided us thru the maze of the Medina to acess the house. His wife Amina is available if you wish to have meals cooked for you. This traditional house is beautiful and comfortable. The kitchen is functional. The roof terrace is great and cozy. The only draw back are the showers which are not at the same standard as the rest of the house. We would stay there again.
Enchanting place- right in the heart of the Old City-walking distance to the Market in the Medina etc etc....
The house is spacious, and not noisy, and I do recommend to stay. The owner provided good customer service.
We arrived by car really late (midnight) after the ferry being delayed by 3.5 hours. We were met by Rachid who showed us where to park the car and arranged for the guardian to save us a space for the whole week. We parked within five minutes of the property: fabulous! Rachid showed us the way which was really easy and was availavle to help us wirh anything if needed. We had arranged in advance to have a tagine for dinner which was also delivered personally at 1 am! Delicious! They were both very nice and helpful. The property was great and well furnished although the cooking pans could have been in better state. There was a feather duvet which was lovely but the mattresses were not good. One was of foam which 'bottomed out' and sank onto the wooden bed and therefore was uncomfortable. The other mattress was seriously hard. Since there were only two of us we ended up putting the sponge mattress ontop of the harder one and so it was tolerable. The hot water was also an issue: the shower was sorted but there was no hot water in the wash basins nor in the kitchen. The house itself is lovely and the interior patio and view from the terrace superb. The location right in the heart of the medina was great: everything within easy reach. I would definitely stay there again, especially if they sort the mattresses out!
The riad is ideal for 4-6 persons. It has traditional architecture and a very nice rooftop terrace. If you like traditional style Maroccan houses, you will enjoy it a lot. It has 2 bathrooms and a kitchen. The only criticism is the shower hoses and heads that must be replaced as they are not comfortable, this is a little effort for the owner -hot water supply itself is good. Support of the owner and housekeepers is good. The house is close to Bab Jdid gate which offers easy entrance to the old medina and sights. We recommend to use this gate if you go by yourself into the medina and not to enter the medina directly from the house without a guide as you may end up in the labyrinth of the small alleys that Fes medina is famous for. It is easy to also make a trip to Meknes and Volubilis. Enjoy your stay!
