The house was clean and spacious, but missing all the extras

  • 3 of 5

It was a bit disappointing in all honesty. We visit the Valley every couple of months and have stayed in oodles of vacation rentals. This house is in a perfect location, close to downtown Napa and within walking distance of our favorite tasting room PureCru - but it's missing all of the thoughtfulness that goes into the convenience of renting a house.

We traveled with friends who came from the east coast and we're from MN. We stayed for a long weekend and were attending some events. Typically we eat some meals out, but like the convenience of having a kitchen so that we can cook in. This house had NOTHING that we are used to. Most often the homes that have at least some basics in the kitchen and we're used to the pay it forwards. If you buy things like butter, olive oil, etc. and don't use it all, you leave it for the next guest. Same with basics of condiments, especially at least SALT & PEPPER! The shakers were literally empty. Yes, there were a few packets that someone left behind from fast food, but seriously. There was a couple of coffee filters, but no coffee. There was only two rolls of toilet paper - for four adults, a Thurs. through Sun. - fortunately, we didn't run out because we were away from the house a lot.

The old house has a basement and smelled musty as soon as we entered. There were no rugs in the entry or kitchen and it was a rainy weekend. The beds were comfortable but the towels smelled musty when you dried off from a shower. Ish. There were robes in the closets, which we didn't touch, but they could skip that and invest in the kitchen goods. No water filter, no bottled water, notta.

The biggest problem for us was the Internet. We conduct work and fast speed is a must. We were able to log on right away, but the actual Internet service was sporadic and slow as heck. We even tried resetting the router, to no avail.

There were two monitors set up as televisions in the bedrooms, but no batteries in the remotes. There is not a television in the main sitting room, which was a problem for one of our sports fan guests. There were DVD's sitting around in that room, which seemed odd.

The lighting is poor throughout and the outlets in the bedrooms are old so the hairdryers etc. that we tried to plug in kept falling off the wall. The owners should invest in power strips for the guests.

Anyways, there are way better options out there. Look around at reviews. It's important.

~Disappointed four.

Owner's Response: Dear Chris- thanks for sharing your personal option & letting us know the house did not satisfy your individual needs. I hope you find a better fit in the future. Dear Future Guests- I encourage you to take Chris advice & click on the other 39 reviews. I personally don't plan my day or travel based on stranger's online opinions, but if you do, you will find an overall 5 star rating. In the living room, there is a guest comment book filled with handwritten, cheerful compliments by guests who love, adore and cherish this wonderful, beautiful, charming, historic Napa home!! I'm bewildered how Chris missed the fully equipped kitchen with all serving & cooking utensils, pots, pans, coffee cups & saucers, water & wine glasses, wine opener, plates, bowls, serving platters, kettle, get the idea. The only way to miss these items is to not open the cupboard door! Any leftover food remnants are cleared at checkout. I don't like to waste food, however I am not going to leave leftovers for the next guest. In my opinion this is basic sanitary procedure. I don't expect to find leftovers in the cupboard or refrigerator when I travel. For fun, I asked the internet about average TP use. I found "The number of days a standard roll of bath tissue usually lasts in the most-used bathrooms in the house is five, according to Charmin customers." Based on this stat, 2 rolls should have been sufficient for a 3 night stay. The house does have an open cellar which is typical of custom built homes in Napa in the 1930's. We stayed the week prior to Chris arrival, and noticed no smells. Perhaps the rain moistened earth created the this scent? Also had no issues with internet and no concerns voiced by previous renters. If Chris alerted us while she was there, it could have been assessed at the time. There is a rubber floor mat to wipe shoes as you enter, you walk right over it, go up two stairs & arrive at a landing area which is perfect to remove shoes before entering the main house. Bewildered this was missed as well! The original light fixtures with amber bulbs in the dining & living areas are absolutely beautiful. In our opinion, the main living room is for conversation or reading, not TV watching. We do not travel to watch TV & have no intention to add a TV in the living room. A TV with cable is in each bedroom. Perfect for use with the DVD's located in the living room.

Charming and beautifully cared for

  • 5 of 5

A lovely house, cared for with love and respect - beautifully built, with historical touches that remind us how details help enhance the whole. We love staying here, and will continue to plan our trips to Napa around the availability of this marvelous home. The beds are comfortable, as is the whole house - it definitely feels like a lovely oasis within the city of Napa.

Cute Napa cottage

  • 4 of 5

The Massa house is a very nice property right in the heart of Napa town. Easy walk to downtown and all that it has to offer! Easy access to 29 and the rest of the valley. Love the period feel of the house, the furnishings and the back yard/courtyard bocce court are a great place to spend an evening!

Massa House was the PERFECT place for our stay in Napa. The home was clean, the kitchen was great for cooking up breakfast before we started on our day, and the proximity to downtown Napa was amazing! We loved staying at Massa and would absolutely return!
