Rare opportunity to stay in a Thatched Cottage in unmissable Broadway

Property type cottage
Minimum Stay 2 - 5 nights

About the property

Delightful thatched cottage with 3 bedrooms, private garden close to High Street

A wonderful opportunity to experience archetypal English thatch cottage living for up to 6 guests in iconic Broadway, The Cotswolds. This lovely thatched cottage - of which only a few remain and is walking distance to sites, shops and olde English pubs - is peacefully located in the stunning and unmissable Cotswolds village of Broadway.

This lovely 400 year old thatched cottage, is presented to a very high standard and is peacefully located in the stunning Cotswolds village of Broadway, which is often referred to as the 'jewel of the Cotswold' and the 'show village of England'. Broadway is well known for its excellent art galleries, antique and modern furniture stores such as OKA which is set in a beautiful Georgian House on the High Street and let's not forget all the wonderful restaurants, cafe's, deli's, pubs and gift shops.

The village is also perfectly placed for exploring the many beautiful towns and villages of the Cotswolds, as well as Stratford-upon-Avon, the birthplace of William Shakespeare and the royal spa town of Cheltenham which is great for theatre and retail therapy. Chipping Campden, Moreton-in-Marsh and Stow-on-the-Wold are all a short drive away.

Additionally, the Cottage is moments from the Cotswold Way which is a 102-mile (164 km) long-distance footpath, running along the Cotswold Edge escarpment of the Cotswold Hills in England.

A legacy of the Broadway Artists' Colony is that the village has several of the country's best art galleries. There are also a number of restaurants, pubs and tea shops, as well as a range of gift and clothes shops. Relaxation, retail therapy and good food and drink make Broadway a very popular place to stay and visit throughout the year.

The Vale of Evesham is the fruit and vegetable basket of England and has for many centuries supported a number of communities that have thrived on its fertile soil. Drained by the River Avon and with the town of Evesham as its centre, the Vale includes land in south Worcestershire, south Warwickshire and north Gloucestershire.

The Cotswolds are a range of hills in west-central England, sometimes called the 'Heart of England'. The name Cotswold means 'sheep enclosure in rolling hillsides'.The area is defined by the bedrock of Jurassic limestone that creates a type of grassland habitat rare in the UK and that is quarried for the golden coloured Cotswold stone. It contains unique features derived from the use of this mineral; the predominantly rural landscape contains beautiful stone-built villages, historical towns and stately homes and gardens.

In the Middle Ages the wool trade made the Cotswolds prosperous and some of this money was put into the building of churches, leaving the area with a number of large handsome Cotswold stone 'wool churches'. The area remains affluent, which has encouraged the establishment of many high quality pubs, restaurants and antique shops.

Cotswold towns include Bourton-on-the-Water, Broadway, Burford, Chipping Norton, Cirencester, Moreton-in-Marsh, Northleach, Stow-on-the-Wold, Stroud and Winchcombe. The town of Chipping Campden is notable for being the home of the Arts and Crafts movement, founded by William Morris at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th centuries. William Morris lived occasionally in Broadway Tower, a folly, now part of a country park. Chipping Campden is also known for the annual Cotswold Olympic Games, a celebration of sports and games dating back to the early 17th century.

Broadway has a number of places to eat and drink, with a range of cuisines and prices to suit most tastes and budgets. The list below is a sample of the options available:

•The Lygon Arms;

•The Potting Shed

•The Swan Inn

About Elizabeth

Originally from Australia. Now residing in London. Moving permanently to The Cotswolds in 2018.

Elizabeth purchased this cottage in 2015

Why Elizabeth chose Wychavon

I am actually new to the Cotswolds, having heard of it yes, but never dedicating the time to explore it. That is until I took my partner there for his birthday in 2015. My gosh, it is beautiful, the scenery, countryside and homes are stunning. Even the sheep look beautiful and content as they sit under the chestnut trees in front of the cottage. My Aunty said it is just how she imagined England to be. The Cotswolds fulfills the image that most of us have of the English Countryside. I came across this thatched cottage and immediately fell in love with it and with Broadway.

I hope you love it as much as I do. It is a special place, rich with history, bucolic and perfectly preserved. Enjoy!

What makes this cottage unique

Here's a chance to stay in a chocolate box English thatched cottage that's full of character, history, space and light. Most rooms have dual aspect views, the surrounding area is verdant with mellow sloping hills, golden Cotswold stone houses and lovely sheep to appreciate. The house is light with a private fenced garden. There's parking too! Oh and you can leave your car at the cottage and just walk to the pub!

Fantastic architecture with original doors, latches, windows and beams. A sense of stepping back in time whilst being a short walk to the vibrant High St.

Charming Cottage with Authentic Experience

  • 4 of 5

As stated, this is a 400 year old cottage. The walk into town is short and enjoyable. We slept with the windows open and awoke to the sounds of our neighbor sheep. The house is complete with character and very well decorated.

As with any older home, there are a few issues. The wet room in the master bedroom was musty, so we simply all shared the main upstairs shower. The half bath on the 1st floor was fine. I have a mold allergy and had no problems in the house. One of our kids was unsettled by the presence of cobwebs, but I felt that the character made our stay worth any of this.

Broadway cottage

  • 5 of 5

Thoroughly loved the cottage in Broadway. There were 6 of us and everyone thought the rooms were nice. The small shower in the master room is a little hard to work with, the other shower was fine. Very close to a pub and the quaint downtown - short walk. Also short car drive to other villages in the area. We really loved the area and enjoyed our time there.

Loved the area, cottage very pretty and well kept, garden was very overgrown, water pressure poor

  • 3 of 5

We had a lovely time , the cottage is beautiful but the garden was completely overgrown , the lawn above our ankles and the flowerbeds knee high in a tangle of weeds which was a shame as it was a lovely weekend at the end of May and we were outside much of the time . The garden furniture was a bit insubstantial for families .

The bathrooms were well fitted but there was a small boiler and insufficient water supply for six people and the bath which was tiny took ages to run .There was nowhere to hang a coat .

We had a super time ! Thank you

Owner's Response: So happy that you had a lovely time in the cottage and in Broadway, The Cotswolds. I'm glad you found it pretty and well kept. We had a very busy week before your arrival and did not want to disturb you during your stay in the cottage by cutting the grass. The grass and flower beds were tended to after your departure. The bath is quite deep and large so may take a while to fill to the top. If guests are using multiple showers, the dishwasher and washing machine at once, a continuous flow of water will be compromised. We offer several coat hanging options. We offer a lovely handmade 3-hooked coat option downstairs in the WC, a 4-hooked coat option on the back door in the middle bedroom plus all 3 bedrooms have lovely antique wardrobes with ample hanging space. I'm not sure why they were all missed. I'm glad you had a super time! With kind regards, Elizabeth

excellent location

  • 4 of 5

Four members of my family were able to stay three lovely nights in this charming Cotswold's cottage. It was as pictured. The shared spaces of the kitchen and living room were big enough for us to stretch out. The furniture is a bit firm. The mattresses are a bit soft. The bathrooms are a bit odd. But, we were totally comfortable nonetheless! We absolutely loved watching the new lambs and their mamas right out of our window. Walking into Broadway was easier than driving and parking. We hiked the Cotswold's way each day. We enjoyed all but one meal in town. The weather was perfect. The English countryside was everything we had hoped it would be! I'd stay here again and again...just don't expect it to be a plush hotel. Instead, respect the age and clever adaptations the owner has accomplished!

Beautiful Cottage

  • 4 of 5

Well, what a beautiful cottage 1 Pye Corner is! Beautifully decorated and appointed – a real treat to stay in such a quintessential English country cottage in the Cotswolds. Perfectly situated to explore such gems as Stowe, Bourton on the Water, and Burford.

Our party of four ate at The Swan in Broadway, which was lovely. (Please note that even in early March we had great difficulty getting a table anywhere in Broadway on the Saturday night, so I would advise you pre-book.)

I only have 2 very minor quibbles. Firstly, the cottage is further out of the village than the description led us to understand (possibly just my misinterpretation). We thought we could wander in, and you probably could in the summer months, but it is an un-lit road, only partially with a footpath and fairly fast, though infrequent, traffic. We did order a cab, but again had trouble booking one over the weekend. The only other minor problem was the consistency of the water temperature when taking a shower. It seemed to change from stone cold to scalding frequently. It might be better to schedule your showers amongst your party, as I think that was probably the problem. Neither of these negative points were a major problem (just think a review should be honest), and I would certainly stay here again.

Lovely cottage. Lovely location. Great choice.

Owner's Response: Hi Catherine I really appreciate you taking the time to write a review, thank you and it's great to hear that you had such a lovely time at Broadway Boutique Cottage (1 Pye Corner Cottage). The cottage is 0.4 miles to the Swan Inn in Broadway (my favourite pub in Broadway). Google Maps state that this takes 8 minutes to walk. There is a pub even closer called The Crown and Trumpet which is 0.3 miles and takes a 6 minute walk. We do offer guests a torch for walking back from the pub at night. Broadway is a popular and thriving village so yes bookings are advised on a weekend. I will update the welcome email I send to guests to reflect this. I shall look into the hot/cold water pressure. Thank you and kind regards Elizabeth
