Description

Gáldar Cottage Rental Photos and Description

Sleeps 6. 3 Bedrooms. 1 Bathroom.

Self catering 'cueva' (cave) building, set into the mountain with some rooms carved into the rock and other more conventional buildings added on. As can be seen in some of the photographs the building is above the level of the clouds in spectacular countryside.

The area is popular with hikers but car hire will be necessary but is very easy to arrange at the airport, about an hour's drive away.

The accommodation is suitable for up to 6 person groups and is located in the mountainous region of Galdar in North West Gran Canaria, a 30 minute drive from the Galdar itself which has all the energy of a traditional Spanish town with restaurants and cafes.

There are three rooms cut into the rock with a separate double bedroom, kitchen and bathroom as out buildings. Unless you're familiar with such constructions its initially hard to visualise. But an experience to relish.

In the case of the Mountain Retreat the 'rooms' are linked by a paved routeway, very like a conventional flat except the corridors are outside. One of the bedrooms is also the main living area but with two curtained bed alcoves cut into the rock (both double beds). Outside there's a separate double bedroom of modern conventional construction as well as kitchen and bathroom facilities. In addition there's a dining cave, with a separate barbecue area.

Perhaps what is most memorable though is the small garden, featuring a listed Dragon tree, and the spectacular views, above the clouds. The peace is absolute. The countryside astounding. When one walks there one understands the passion of the great explorers of the past.

NB. Please do be aware though that the property is high up which means that in the Winter (November to April) temperatures are low for Gran Canaria, typically 14 degrees during the day dropping to 8 degrees at night. Inside the cave though the temperature is warmer than the outside (as it retains the mountain's heat) and there is a calor gas heater.

Prices start at just £20 per person per night and are even less when 7 nights or more are booked.

ABOUT THE REGION

NORTHERN GRAN CANARIA Northern Gran Canaria is an area steeped in history and Spanish culture. The capital is Las Palmas. The former capital was Galdar. Nothing on the island is particularly far away as Gran Canaria is only 40km across.

Attractions in the Las Palmas and Galdar include its architecture going back hundreds of years. In Galdar you have the world-famous Painted Cave discovered around 1900 and built by the island's aboriginal people before the Spanish conquest. Guided tours are available in English, German, French and Italian as well as Spanish. There some beautiful sandy beaches, secluded beaches and some of the best scuba diving in the North Atlantic is to be had at Sardina.

As well as the island's attractions there are ferries to nearby Tenerife taking as little as an hour, from Agaete which is close to Sardina (5km) and which depart every couple of hours.Probably what this area is best known for is its peace and tranquillity, its stunning scenery and views of the Ocean and the mountains, its unusual flora and fauna unique to these islands. The light makes it popular with artists and photographers. There are few tourists and English is not spoken here. It is a far cry from the bustling south.

About The Owner

My wife and I have been coming to this region of Gran Canaria for over 25 years. We love the area and the people. We decided to buy this property for our retirement. Our background is social work. We live in London where I am from. My wife, Trish, is from County Galway in Ireland. We are nearing retirement now.

The Owner purchased this cottage in 1999

Why The Owner chose Gran Canaria

The views from the garden are stunning, overlooking the valley of Agaete and it's port, pine forests across the ravine and Mount Teide on Tenerife in the distance. Living and sleeping in a real cave, eating out al fresco in the garden, going trekking, visiting the villages nearby and towards the centre of the island.

What makes this cottage unique

Peace and tranquility, away-from-it-all, ideal for photographers, artists, country-lovers and a whole host of others too!

GRAN CANARIA'S MOUNTAIN REGION

The cave house is located above the level of the clouds in a stunning and magical location in the village of Caideros, which has a supermarket with an ATM and the nearest bar and restaurant is 5km away in Saucillo.

What this area is best known for is its peace and tranquillity with stunning scenery and views of the Ocean and the mountains. Its flora and fauna also is unique to the islands.

There are many interesting and exciting walks and areas to explore. Information on these is to be found in the mountain region's main tourist information centre which is just 15km away from the Cave House in the town of Artenara, the island's highest town.

A taste of what the island has to offer can be found in the following video: https://youtu.be/8VpWUuChTGo

Unlike the more tourist driven South Northern Gran Canaria is steeped in history and Spanish culture. The capital is Las Palmas. Nothing on the island is particularly far away as Gran Canaria is only 40km across but a car is essential. These are very reasonably priced and can be picked up from the airport (from just 115 euros for a week).

Attractions in the Las Palmas and Galdar include its architecture going back hundreds of years. In Galdar you have the world-famous Painted Cave discovered around 1900 and built by the island's aboriginal people before the Spanish conquest. As well as the island's attractions there are ferries to nearby Teneriffe taking as little as an hour, from Agaete which is close to Sardina (5km) and which depart every couple of hours.
